Odysseus Heroic Qualities

Also in The Odyssey, Odysseus makes careless decisions which lead them into trouble. Odysseus makes a plan to stab the cyclops in the eye, which leads the crew members to run for their lives to get to their ships. In another place in the book Odysseus leads his ships to the land of the Laestrygonians. When they get there they see a giantess who then calls her husband. In the book it states, “ She at once called to her husband Antiphates, who immediately began killing my men.” Odysseus then cuts the cable from his own ship to save himself. Therefore, Odysseus is not a hero.

Hero’s come in many different perspectives. Some might view a hero as the fictional super heroes. Other’s consider hero’s to be modern day people. Some qualities of a hero are someone who is courageous, brave, and kind. A hero is a person who is admired for their courageous acts and achievements. They never give up even when times get hard. It’s more about the hero taking a stand for what they believe is right. Taking a stand counts more than winning.

The quote can tell how any ordinary person can become a hero if they just do the right steps, overcome challenges, and accept all the help that is given to them. As Odysseus was the only Ithacan to return home, it would seem that he placed his own needs above those of his fellow men. In fact, it would appear that Odysseus did not show any determination at all because he was unable to save a single crew member. However, Tiresias, a prophet, told Odysseus that he would be the only one to survive the journey. There was nothing he could have done. In addition, Odysseus’ determination throughout the journey compensates for his sole homecoming. His encounter with the sirens is one example of his determination. Odysseus instructs his crew, saying, “Therefore, you are to tie me up … and if I shout and beg to be untied, take more turns of rope to muffle me” (Homer 12.1249-1254). Odysseus goes to great lengths to survive the sirens’ song, and tells his crew to stop at nothing, even if he will “shout and beg to be untied”. Odysseus’ actions with the sirens is one of the many instances where he displays relentless determination. In the Odyssey, written by Homer, Odysseus displays heroic qualities such as bravery. As Odysseus is on his journey home, he comes across a lot of challenges to prove his bravery. For example, Odysseus was brave when three of his men did not come back to the ship because they ate some lotus fruit. Odysseus has to force them to come back. As quoted from the book, “...those who ate this honeyed plant, the Lotus, never cared to report, nor to return: they longed to stay forever, browsing on that native bloom, forgetful of their homeland. I drove them, all three wailing, to the ships, tied them down under their rowing benches, and called the rest:

“A hero is any person really intent on making this a better place for all people” (Maya Angelou; American author, poet, and civil rights activist). This world is filled with many epic characters, movie stars, and other people that are considered to be heroes: one of them is Odysseus. Yet, many of Odysseus’ actions brought forth the fact that he was not heroic. A hero is selfless, humble, and a good leader that has many admirable values. However, Odysseus did not have those qualities, therefore, he should not be emulated and celebrated and placed upon a pedestal that people admire and choose to follow. He did not have the characteristics a hero must have and was not an example for others. By no standards was Odysseus a hero.

Despite being a stout hearted war hero, Odysseus is certainly not a hero in any other aspect. There is not one human being who could possibly agree that a cheating, prideful, men killing monster is in any way

Even though a majority of the story is about Odysseus, he is not a hero in The Odyssey. He boasts about everything, he gets his men killed, and he leaves his men behind. But a major thing he did was disrespecting the gods, in example. not giving credit to Poseidon for (Source 1) summoning a sea serpent to get the Trojan horse into Troy. Odysseus doesn’t do a single thing for others. Even though he fought for his people, he is not a hero because he thinks only of himself and doesn’t respect others.

Odysseus’ label is not a hero, it’s a survivor. He made mistakes and had many great flaws but he never once chose to fix them. Out of hundreds of his crew, only he survived and made it back to Ithica. During his time away from home, he had many opportunities to be a hero, but he wasn’t one. Odysseus acted fast in each situation and showed few traits that showed he had the capability of being a hero but he never was one.

Many have tried to describe what a hero should be but who really is a hero? Heroism isn’t just possessing great qualities like enormous physical strength and being extremely powerful. Rather, it is the conviction to put other people’s needs ahead of one’s own. A hero is considered to be someone who is strong, brave and honorable who shares our beliefs and is ready to stand up for what is good, noble and just. Many such heroes have existed and they continue to arise time and time again.

Heroes are willing to face danger sacrificing their lives for others. Heroism is not just demonstrated by being kind but being brave and courageous and willing to make a change, not worried about what could happen if the challenge is faced. Heroes are courageous and never doubt themselves.

Being a hero is when you’re selfless, brave, and humble. Heroes are the characters that learn the most and do the most affective actions. There is always going to be a hero in every story, movie, or real life scenario. A hero doesn’t have to be the one who saves someone’s life or fights off evil and is always wearing a cape. A hero can be as simple as someone doing the right thing not for themselves but for the good of someone else.

“Loyalty and devotion lead to bravery. Bravery leads to the spirit of self- sacrifice. The spirit of self- sacrifice creates trust in the power of love,” (Morihei Ueshiba). This quote goes to show the steps in which it takes to qualify as a rightful hero. Therefore, a hero is someone who is self- sacrificing and courageousness, sets an example, and is never selfish or cowardly.

A big factor for someone to be a hero is for them to be brave in the face of evil, and Odysseus has showed his bravery by not showing fear in the presence of evil. After arriving in Polyphemus’s island, He and his crew wander off in a cave where they are then trapped in by Polyphemus. When Odysseus and his crew are trapped in the cave Odysseus doesn’t panic but proceeds to make plans to escape to cave but when two of his crewmates get devoured by Polyphemus, he still proceeds on instead of panicking from the loss. He then makes the dangerous plan of driving a wooden spike into the cyclop’s eye, blinding him where he and his crew then escape too their boat, where they then sailed away. From this Odysseus and his crew could have easily died from fearing Polyphemus and not attempting any plans to stop him, but Odysseus manned up his crew and sent his crew free. Another example of Odysseus’s bravery is when he and his crew go the route that Circe and
