Nursing Home Evaluation I am seeking to find a home for my 76 year old Grandfather Leroy. It is becoming increasingly difficult for him to take care of himself and no family members are available to take care of him as it is becoming a full time job. He was diagnosed with colon cancer a few years back and his disease, in conjunction with chemotherapy, has taken away his capacity to care for himself. He was also recently diagnosed with Parkinson¡¯s disease. The name of the Nursing home that I chose to evaluate is the Lakeview Nursing Center. This facility on the outside appears to be well maintained. It is composed of brick and is set in a good neighborhood. Upon entering the facility, the first thing I noticed was the …show more content…
Both of the gentlemen stated they had been in other homes and that this was the nicest home they had been in. Kenneth complained of his first home ¡°smelling more like a zoo than a nursing home.¡± John told me that his last home was on the South Side and that the neighborhood was filled with gang bangers and hoodlums. When his family visits here though, they wheel him through the Lincoln Park neighborhoods and it¡¯s nice. For all of the questions that I asked these two men, they had just as many questions for me. Heading in to this assignment, I hadn¡¯t really considered that someone would be asking ME questions. In the midst of all that happens in nursing homes, it¡¯s important to remember that these residents aren¡¯t just dependent, older people, but that they are still people just like you and I. The two levels of care offered by the nursing home are intermediate and skilled. Admission requirements for the facility are based on an on-site-evaluation basis, as well as a look at the prospective resident¡¯s medical history and a physical. Exact cost figures were unavailable but the average cost per/day to live in this home is estimated to be approximately $164.00. Dr. Sandra Timmerman of MetLife Mature Market Institute reports that the average stay in a nursing home is 2.5 years. That¡¯s an estimated cost of $149.650.00 for two and a half years. This high cost helps
Another lady who resides at an assisted living facility that I operate gave me her views of living there. Her history is that of having dementia and she was becoming so forgetful, she was scared of burning her home down. Therefore, she and her family decided to move her to a place where she would have assistance in getting things done. She states
Types and number of staff that this facility needs, and the rationale for this. How these needs differ in facilities that attend to different long-term care populations
health problems to assist nursing home staff with the provision of appropriate care. The facility
The information contained in this report was gathered in a private nursing home over 2 weeks that for the sake of this essay, be called “facility x”
In Being Mortal, Atul Gawande painted a little depressing picture of the realities faced by the elderly in the US nowadays: declining health status, economic insecurity, and loss of independence. It seems once the older people move into nursing homes or assisted living facilities, they lose autonomy, dignity and privacy as the institutions are not able to fully individualize care. Even though the situation has been improving, it still shocks me to see how unhappy some of the elderly are in these circumstances. Realizing senior care facilities often fail to address all aspects of well-being, I would like to explore the issues of promoting both objective and subjective component in quality of care for the older people.
Assisted living communities are a becoming a more fiable choice among seniors and the aging population. Many senior
When faced with the task of finding long term care for a loved one, what is of utmost importance when finding facilities in your area? Is it the amenities? The resources offered? Or the staff members that provide some of the most intimate cares to your loved one? While it might not be the first thing that comes to mind, the nursing staff in long term care facilities create the atmosphere for those who live in it. In fact, the increased turnover rates in long term care facilities has been shown to have a negative impact on the care that your loved one receives. These turnover rates “increase catheter use, restraint use, disruptions in the continuity of care, the probability of medical errors, the risk of developing contractures and pressure
Senior living residents are protected by numerous state licensure and regulatory requirements from the size of the rooms and resident capacity to security and patient-staff ratios. When looking to place your loved one in a senior living environment, it is important to know not only about the care and services they provide but also that their facility is appropriately licensed and without serious violations or reviews. Due
Documented in Oregon, one individual (Kate Cheney) was sent to a nursing home because her family was tired of caring for her. Kate had spent one unhappy week in the nursing home and her quality of life degraded so tremendously that she was motivated to take her own life. There is no requirement under the Oregon law that “sufficient home and community-based long-term care services be provided to relieve the demands on family members and ease the individual’s feelings of being a burden” (Golden 20). It is extremely upsetting that the daughter or son of an individual could devalue life to such an extent, especially the life of a parent. This lack of caring by family members can cause the patient to request PAS or take their own life.
“There is some evidence that the quality of care for nursing home residents has improved, such as the decreased use of physical restraints and psychotropic medications, serious problems continue for many residents, especially those at the end of their lives.” Some of the issues have been corrected, not abusing or neglecting the elderly patients but the services are not handling the most important part of the patients’ lives. They are still having some issues with handling the patients that are at the end of their lives, they need to focus on the end of their lives in dealing with this they need to know how deal with this part with them and the families.
“The Average cost in Kentucky is 208 dollars per day.In Bowling Green nursing home rooms range from $185 -$202.In Lexington $147-$238.Owensboro rooms range from $205-237.”This is all per day. This information was retrieved from senior homes website .So It’s must be very disappointing to this families when they realize that what they're paying for is unsanitary, unhealthy, and very depressing.
When trying to find a way to reduce cost of long-term care it can be challenging, therefore, finding two alternative solutions is necessary for just in case the primary solution doesn’t work. One such potential solution would be a cooperative home between college students and the elderly patients. This could help resolve the cost problem because a spilt cost between college students and the patients would dramatically reduce costs and it would help the college students find a more affordable living space in comparison to sharing an apartment with other roommates. We would, of course, interview the candidates for the living spaces to ensure that both parties are not only compatible but also reliable. The situation would be like a roommate because both parties must pay their rent on time and be responsible for their costs. Obviously, the elderly patients would most
Cassandra, I found the Nursing Home Compare link to be informative, and I wish I had been aware of this website when we had to place my mother in a nursing home. I compared the three nursing homes I have worked at, or my mother was a resident of and the results were surprising to me.
When the time comes and family members are no longer able to provide the care and support an aging parent needs, it is important to consider the best methods of helping a loved one make a smooth transition into a nursing home. This can be a difficult time for many seniors because it means a loss of their ability to make many decisions for themselves. It is also a time where they will be making a major lifestyle transition at a time when they are already vulnerable and likely suffering with health issues. Fortunately, there are some tips on how family and nursing home staff can help make this transition as easy as possible for the elderly.
There are different options for someone who need assistance. With those different options, there are different ways to choose the best facility and compare them. One way to compare someone could go directly to the nursing home website and see what they
