Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in prison 18 of those years incarcerated on Robben Island and the rest at Pollsmoor Prison. While Mandela was on Robben Island he still was a strong symbol for black resistance who was for his release and led an international campaign. Mandela had a global political community that was still growing while he was in prison. That is when the South African government descried to move Mandela and the 10 ANC to another Prison the Pollsmoor Prison. They were hoping to cut off contact between them and the South African Government.

Nelson Mandela is a great man, and will always be considered a legend even long after now. From the suffering he grown up from, he realized what his true meaning in life was, and thus strived for equality. At first Mandela’s view on protest was violent, including treason and sabotage, but during his time in prison he changed his perspective into a nonviolent one. Many people say he had a reincarnation of thought during his time in prison.

Nelson spent 27 years of his life in prison. Missing his kids grow up, birthdays, weddings. And finally on February 11th, 1990 Nelson was released. Four years later, the people of South Africa voted Nelson Mandela as their first black president of South Africa. Nelson was president from 1994 to 1999.

Mandela was unemployed for a while with no money and in order to do anything in his life he needed other people and he started training as a lawyer. As everyone saw, Nelson Mandela never gave up and kept trying to make a living with nothing and because of he never gave up, he got the job as a clerk. This job did not even supply enough for him. He was only making $1.30 a week. This obviously didn’t meet his basic needs, but he kept fighting and instead of taking a bus to work everyday twice a day, paying money, he walked miles to and from work to save money. In 1942, Mandela took one of the biggest risks an African American would probably never take. Mandela enrolled to the University of Witwatersrand knowing that he was going to be the only black guy in the law faculty. The University knew the kind of guy Mandela was, so the University opened up a new world of ideas and beliefs to him. Lots of people accepted him, but many did not. Nelson Mandela lead the South African people out of apartheid by using peaceful protests to help spread awareness of the SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC condition of HIS country to the world during the end of the 20th century. He was SENTENCED TO life IMPRISONMENT in 1963 for treason, but the ban on his image in public, made him an icon to the black community, THIS kept the hope of ending the apartheid movement alive for his country. Mandela was an accomplished, educated man, who became president OF SOUTH AFRICA, ACTING AS a negotiator between two feuding races. Nelson Mandela is known as the Champion of Freedom and has been given that honor, because he is an extraordinarily great figure to look up to. He has a lot of great character traits that has helped him a lot in his dark times, such as how he is selfless, determined, righteous, and always thinks about others and how to help. Today, he is known as the first African American president of South Africa, and he is most remembered for his actions to try and overthrow the tyrannous pro-apartheid government in South Africa where he spent twenty seven years in prison for his rebellious actions. He is also remembered for his work to achieve human rights and a better future in South Africa, which is what he eventually accomplished.
