Did the crusades have a negative or positive effect. In 1095 pope urban the 2nd called the first crusade which was the start of something that would have an Positive effect on the Eastern empire and christianity. In 1905 the byzantine emperor Alexius Comnenus asked the Eastern empire for help after being threatened by seljuk turks and to aid the eastern empire pope urban called the first crusade so that they could fight back against the muslims with the Eastern empire and take back the holy lands. This crusade would lead to three more which would have a positive effect on christianity and the Eastern and Byzantine empires. Some positive effects were they found new food this also the crusaders conquered more land for the Eastern empire and found new clothing/material. The results crusades had many positive effects on the Eastern and Byzantine empire. One of which was that many more merchants were supporting them or selling to them and they also discovered new foods from the east. These two things helped the empire by allowing them to find new things through trade which ws increased because of the crusades because the crusaders would need more food and equipment. Document 2 states that “merchants in Venice and other northern Italian cities built large fleets to carry crusaders to the holy lands.” “They later used those fleets to open new markets in crusader states.” This shows that the merchants helped the crusaders and then they opened shops where the crusaders were so that
Besides having the Crusades being negative based on dying and losing their main objective, another example as to why the Crusades ended so negatively, is that many lands were demolished and robbed. In addition, in document 4 it indicates “ … the crusaders and the Venetians stormed Constantinople,, sacked the city, destroying its magnificent library, and grabbed thousands of relics that were later sold in Europe. From destruction, the Byzantine Empire as a political unit never recovered.” This is pertinent because it is clearly stated that they had destroyed buildings and when things are destroyed it’s rarely a good thing. Another thing that shows negativity is that after the Byzantine Empire was sacked, it never repaired. When something is damaged, it’s really bad for the people who have a relation to it. So when they had destroyed the Byzantine Empire, it must’ve hurt many people to see their city ruined. Furthermore in document B is states “Jerusalem was taken from the north on the morning of July 15, 1099. The population was put to the sword by the Franks, who pillaged the area for a week.
According to an article published in 2009, it is believed that there were a numerous effects of crusades:
The crusades were a combined of nine wars for the holy land in jerusalem. Were the results of the Crusades more positive or more negative? The results of the crusades were more negative. Because it grew religious hatred between the three also the crusaders sacked the city of constantinople. Also because of the slaughter of the jews which left hatred.
The Papacy in Rome sanctioned the First Crusade and Pope Urban II preached for a great Christian expedition to capture Jerusalem, the Holy Lands from the Muslims. During this time religion permeated every aspect of life. The Christian kings and peasants believed that every human being was judged in death and one way to absolve oneself of sin was to die in the name of the Lord, therefore dying in the Crusades would purify the soul allowing them to go straight to heaven. Consequently, “thousands of laymen and clergy took up the cross and younger sons of the upper-class had military advantages to become Crusaders” (Fiero, 2017). At this particular time, the church acknowledged and vindicated fighting and killing in the name of God, resulting in the Crusaders slaughtering all enemies of Christ; hundreds of men, women, and children plus the “entire Jewish populations of Cologne and Mainz became victims” (Fiero, 2017). The First Crusade set a dangerous precedent, the rise of organized anti-Jewish persecution and each subsequent Crusade resulted in renewed attacks on the Jews. The persecution of Jews reached a climax during the Crusades.
In the eleventh century and into the thirteenth century a management of a series of nine wars came to know as the crusades. They both have a positive and negative impact on the eastern not only eastern but western too. Were the result of the crusades more positive or negative? The result of the crusades more negative considering that they would turn their fury against Jews and murder their entire communities.Their goal was also to separate the churches permanently. They wouldn’t have tolerance for people facing the wrong way while praying in mosque. It was also hard for to maintain crusaders kingdoms.
The first crusades are initiated when Byzantine Emperor Alexius Comnenus requests help. The Crusades were holy wars fought between Christians in Europe and Muslims in the Middle East. The question being asked here is Were the results of the crusades more positive or negative. One reason the crusades happened on November 27, 1095, in Clermont, France, Pope Urban II called for a Crusade to help the Byzantines and to free the city of Jerusalem. Document the First Crusade states that The Crusaders first gathered in Constantinople in fall 1096.This is interesting because Document the First Crusade states that The official start date was set for August 15, 1096. Those armies that left before that time are considered
To begin with, wars were never a good thing so why would anyone think that the crusades were positive. Document 6 states that in the 4th Crusade was a destructive and wasteful event that divided the Christian world. This is important because the Fourth Crusade, like the rest, was a was that cause many lives to be lost. It took place in 1204 and in Jerusalem, it states “...sacked the Christian (Eastern Orthodox) city of Constantinople, capital of the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine Empire).”Document 4 states that in the Fourth Crusade, to add on more information, there was so many things that had went wrong and never recovered. This is relevant because the fourth document states “destroying the
The First Crusade, a time of strife, war, and bloodshed. The First Crusade was a war for the Holy Land. It was called into effect by Pope Umbar II in an attempt to reclaim the Holy Land from the Jews and to return it to Christianity and to assist in repelling the Turks.
For 200 years from the eleventh century to the twelfth century (1091-1291) a war between Christians (which is the most popular religion at this moment) and the Muslim religion fought to get back the Holy Land. Byzantine Empire were losing against the Muslim. The Byzantine Empire called the Pope for aid, he decided he would help only because they were Christians. This was a barbarous act that caused the death of an abundance amount of people and the eradication of many things. That is why The Crusade had a negative effect of the world even to this day, a big stain. One of the most impactful events that left a mark was the killing of many innocent people during that time. In Doc 1 it states “In Europe, crusaders sometime turned their fury against
The Crusades were a failure in many ways. However, the Crusades also had many positive outcomes. These many outcomes included new ideas, better trade, and the revealing of the rest of the world. These all came from the Muslims along with a multitude of goods like cotton and the compass. Despite the all the fighting with Muslims, the Crusaders collected things from them and caused a step of evolution to occur. Life in Europe was now easier and longer thanks to the medicines and other things, until the trade frenzy brought a plague with no known cure. The trading ships brought mice/rats that had fleas carrying the Black Death or Black Plague. ⅓ of the population died leading up to the fall of the Manor system. All of this wouldn’t have occurred
I believe it was more negative because killing people was never always the way to go. Although the crusades did have a world impact, their legacy will forever be the same. One reason that it is a negative result is that they are the negative result in their legacy between the Muslims and Christians. They also destroyed many cities and split two churches into never being together permanently. Document 5 states that the negative results in the crusades was that they made the relationship between the Jews, Christians, and Muslims
I think that the results of the crusades were negative because the setbacks they had with the muslims fighting back would hold them from conquering the empires.
One of the long-term affects the crusades had on western civilization is the economic benefits. As discussed in one of the previous paragraphs, western Europe benefited economically of the crusades because of trade. This benefits the development of western civilization because it opened the opportunity to have long distance trade. Many of these trades were able to happen because of this accessibility to the Mediterranean allowing them to trade with the far east. Allowing
How can something so horrible turn out so well? The Crusades. The Crusades were military expeditions undertaken by European Christians in the eleventh, twelfth, and thirteenth centuries to recover control of the Holy Land from the Muslims. They were devastating for many Christians, or Jews. The Turks, or Muslims, and the Jews fought for many years over Jerusalem, resulting in many deaths. In the end, the Jews prevailed, turning it into the Holy place it is today. During the Middle Ages, Christian Jews tried to recapture Jerusalem, which had been previously taken by Muslim Turks.
IMPACT OF THE CRUSADES ON THE LATE MEDIEVAL WORLD. The Crusades greatly impacted economic expansion as well as the expansion of Europe as a whole. Europe regained contact with the outside world, and as it did so, trade with the Middle East, India, and China brought goods as well as knowledge. Merchants in Italy converted the ships used to carry crusaders into trade ships that would sail to the Middle East. The Crusaders introduced textiles, spices, foods products and many more goods to the Europeans from the Middle East, and through all of this trade came the development of a money economy.
