Introduction:
I did my service learning in a non-profit organization called Skills Inc. It is a residential facility that works with adults with intellectual disabilities and recovering addicts who have some kind of mental health diagnosis and other challenges to achieve their goals through employment and supportive services. The facility also contains an on-site factory that operates a saw mill and employs some of their clients. My service learning included shadowing a case manager, who maintained daily contact with the clients that works across the street at the saw mill. In order for a client to be able to work at the mill they must pass a specialized assessment created by the facility to ensure that the client is capable of

and I have always remembered people calling it the dummy farm. As sad as it may sound, I had called it the dummy farm too, because it is a recognizable landmark in my area and I had grown up hearing it being referred to that. I had always wondered how they could dare to let those people work around such dangerous machinery as a saw mill. My attitudes and beliefs have definitely changed because of my experience, I found out that these people are no different than I am and should be treated with respect that I would want to be treated with. The answer to the question of how they dared to let those people work there is simple. The employees at the mill are just like any other factory employees. It is always kept clean and maintained and as any other mill has its daily quota without any “crazy” people running around causing havoc.
Reflect on ways these attitudes and beliefs have changed as a result of working in this diverse situation and on how you feel this change contributes to your ability to promote civic engagement to others. Most of the clients under the care of Skills are people who are capable of taking care of themselves even the clients who are mentally challenged. I guess I thought going into this field that every client would be unruly and difficult to work with. I found out that is not the case, the client is not only seeking help, but is also ready to

Working in nonprofit is gratifying and at the same time challenging. As an administrator for a major nonprofit organization, I have witness first-hand the effects of staff retention and excessive turnover and its effects on the quality of service provided to clients and the increase in the cost of recruitment. However, recent data support how nonprofits continue to experience growth, while the private sector remains stagnant. Per the nonprofit quarterly the steady growth of nonprofit was estimated at 14.4 million people in 2013. In 2003, nonprofit organizations paid an estimated $425 billion in wages. Ten years later, in 2013, total nonprofit wages had risen to $634 billion. This increase in paid wages represents a growth of 49.2 percent (Nonprofit
A Service Learning project is one of the project requirements to complete the Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree through Ferris State University (FSU). My Service Learning experience was completed at the VA Medical Center (VAMC) in November, 2014. This paper includes details of the facility along with the contact information for the coordinator of the project. A description of my role as a volunteer, critical reflection of my experience, and a synthesis of the Service Learning are also included.
One of my skills I used as a mental health technician is having the ability to listen on multiple levels , this allows me as a technician not only to hear what is said, but how it’s said, why it’s being said, and what it means in the context of that client. I also have a sense of humor, but counselors, I should know how to form a relational connection with someone to the point of developing a shared sense of humor in a therapeutic environment that the client can feel comfortable. Another strength is having patience with my clients as they process our discussion. Using patience can help build a good rapport with clients, and realize it may take them time to accept certain things and to move towards positive changes. Working in the field of behavioral health for 20 years, I work with clients that you need to discuss something many times before they were prepared to make a move in any particular direction. I also understand you are not likely going to see large changes in an individual client; therefore be okay with incremental progress in their lives and rejoice over small
It is also a “boundary spanning” activity in that it requires active involvement from people both within and outside of the classroom context, often resulting in participant contributors who represent a variety of generations, ethnicities, social groups, and experience levels (Billig and Furco, 2002, p.vii). Service-learning is designed to reduce the boundaries between an institutional campus environment and the community around it. It is designed to connect learning to real experience through service and reflection (Ball and Schilling, 2006; Becker, 2000). As a baseline to facilitate this development, service-learning is distinct from other types of community service and civic engagement experiences in that the service-learning experience must not only have a service and reflective component but also be clearly tied to the curriculum through learning objectives and theoretical underpinnings (Bloomquist, 2015; Pritchard, 2001). As Barbara Holland, former Director of the U.S. National Service-Learning Clearinghouse, shared, “Service-learning is all in the hyphen. It is the enrichment of specific learning goals through structured community service opportunities that respond to community-identified needs and opportunities.” (Kenworthy-U’Ren, Taylor, and Petri, 2006: 121).
As a human service worker some basic skill that I would assist a client would be helping them to be more self-sufficient through learning new skills. I would also recommend them to different resource that would assist them as they work to overcome setbacks in life. I would work closely with client to evaluate their supportive systems ensuring they are in line with their everyday needs. A good plan of action would be put in place after the client have been evaluated according to his or her disorder for helping with assistance or coordinating certain services that are put in place for a client needs. I would also provide emotional support to foster a good working relationship in order for my client to feel comfortable when discussing their problems
The agency I participated at for my ten hours of service learning this semester was the Plain City food pantry. The food pantry is located on 156 W Main St, Plain City, OH 43064. There are many people that run this agency. A couple names are Phyllis and Jane. I participated March 2nd from 9:30 to 11:30, March 3rd from 9:00 to 12:00, April 4th, from 9:30 to 11:30 and April 6th from 9:00 to 12:00.
The service day on April 5th, really gave me a precious opportunity to have access to the life and health of immigrant persons from South America and their priorities in life as well as their consideration about health. This is my first time to help so many immigrant persons from South America check their blood pressure, height and body weight, and give them information about how to have access to free clinical and blood pressure control as well as weight management. I really thank Professor Raja, because it was she who gave us this precious experience to do service for and know this special population in USA.
Discuss the six diversity components and associated diversity initiatives that make up the systematic approach to diversity management. Why are these components important in managing diversity?
The critical difference of service learning and the traditional learning style is that students are learning and addressing real needs in the community. Which connect students to the community through meaningful interactions with others, safety, and educational needs. This specific course includes readings, discussions, and activities to support
In my CEPD 3200: Skills and Ethics in Human Services course, I had to complete three hours of service learning in a facility of my choice. For my Service Learning Project, I volunteered at Southern Hills Christian Church, a local church that my family attends. Southern Hills Christian Church has a church service for children in Kindergarten-3rd grade called “All Stars”, which is where I completed my service learning hours. I chose to complete my hours at the church in the children’s department because I have an interest in wanting to work with children as a career. Also, I am an active volunteer at my church, so I did not need to go through any background checks, paperwork, etc. The following is what I did while completing my service learning hours, what I learned, and how I can apply this into the real world.
When I began my Civics class, thinking it potentially difficult and boring, I did not initially look forward to this project. However, as I did each activity, I found myself enjoying each and every one. From sitting in a board meeting to collecting trash, I discovered something new in all of the ways I volunteered. Not only did the people I volunteered for gain something through my service, but I feel that I gained a lot as well.
Due to unforeseen events, the household income for the family was depleted to the poverty level of $24,600. Due to my interests, I decided to work for a non-profit organization that focuses on education reform and decided to participate in more pro-bono work to be able to increase my experience as a lawyer. I was fired from my previous education reform lawyer position due to layoffs and having just started working at the company, I was an obvious choice. The firm that my wife worked for fired her, and she is currently looking for a job. Since she is a social worker and has a degree in sociology, it is difficult to find jobs that match her interests and pay well enough. As one can imagine, a non-profit organization lawyer does not make as
I highly recommend this course continue to require service learning as a component of Academic Foundations. It is never a bad idea to get the students involved on campus and get them familiar with the facilities we have located on campus. Getting involved with the community and individuals active is a positive aspect of this
As a student, I have become more aware of the needs of my community. I have always worked at being active in my community to help those in need. Most of my volunteer work revolved around collecting donations and lending a helping hand at shelters. My volunteer work did not usually involve an academic base. I was not concerned with the ins and outs of why homelessness was a problem or the difficulty women faced finding assistance to escape abusive relationships. I just knew the shelters were always in need of donations and that is where I found myself helping most. In this paper, I will describe a personal experience I have had with service learning. I will also select one service learning idea from the National Student Nurses’ Association planning guideline that interests me and describe how this type of experience will enhance my nursing student experience.
