Philosophy of Education A famous author once said, “When you don’t know where you are going, any road will take you there.” There is truth in that statement when we look at the nature of humans today. Today’s society is filled with people who are wondering around with no purpose or direction in life. People today are content with this helpless lifestyle and so generation after generation will continue until the society has no leaders. I attribute this directly to the education of these individuals. As a future teacher, I must look at what the nature of students has become, the nature of knowledge, and ask myself why we have public education. As an educator, it will be my responsibility to help ensure that students are learning to be independent of the environmental trend and able to cut their own path through life. With this view on the nature of students, I am inclined to believe that the nature of knowledge is relative, depending on person, place, or time. Knowledge is defined as an understanding of facts. I extend this definition to include the social aspect saying that knowledge is the understanding of facts in a given society. What is knowledge in one society may not be knowledge in the next society. When the social aspect is looked upon, then knowledge depends entirely on person, place, and or time. This seems to imitate the way that Rousseau may have looked at knowledge. When Rousseau talked about the importance of education in a rural setting, I believe that he had in mind that the facts that are taught in an urban setting are entirely different then if taught in a rural setting. Knowledge depends on time. I look at time in the context of years. What was knowledge 15 years ago, in some cases, is entirely different. The study of cancer and its causes is entirely different in some aspects than it was just five years ago, so that is an example of relative knowledge. There is one thing that is universally sought after in this world, regardless of race, ethnicity, age, location, and upbringing. There is one thing that every single human being hungrily craves. There is one thing that can make the potential difference between a life of abject poverty or comfortable prosperity: knowledge. The human mind’s thirst for knowledge can never be fully quenched, and it is always left wanting more; although, this isn’t necessarily a detrimental thing. Many different and unique styles of education have emerged as an attempt to satisfy the universal desire of knowledge, but it is often debated which style of education is the most effective. For many individuals, choosing a career is one of the hardest decisions to be faced with. The majority of students in college spend their first year stressing about what they are going to do with the rest of their life. I, fortunately, have known since I was in middle school that I wanted to be an elementary school teacher. As a future teacher I feel that essentialism and progressivism are going to be my unique philosophies of education.
I believe education is essential to the future success of today’s youth. It is the responsibility of educators and school systems to provide every child who enters school with the best education possible. There are four central tenets to my philosophy of how this can be achieved: children need to feel secure; children need to feel respected and valued for who they are; teachers need to employ a variety of instructional techniques; teachers need to make the content they teach meaningful to their students. If attention is paid to these four points, every child will have the best opportunity to succeed in life.
Education is so important to one’s life that educators cannot merely teach in one manner. To truly teach someone you must dig until you find a way for him or her to completely understand. That’s why I think that teaching is going to be a great challenge everyday. Becoming a teacher is going to be one of the greatest accomplishments of my life. Teaching was never a childhood dream for me like it was with others. Some people have always known that they wanted to become some type of teacher, but I never decided to until I entered college. I have come to believe over the past year as a Professional Development School intern that one method or one teaching style limits the ability of the teacher and the students to learn effectively in the classroom. As a young child I always looked forward to family gatherings. I was one of twenty grandchildren on my dad's side of the family, and one in seven on my mom's side, so there were always lots of children around. But it wasn't the children in my own age group or older that I wanted to be around, it was the babies and one's younger than myself that I wanted to spend time with. I decided in middle school, that I would be a teacher. I feel that I can understand children and their needs and have the patience and desire needed to teach.
Becoming a teacher was not something I always knew I wanted. As I approached an age where I really started considering what I would like to do for a career I only knew that I did not want to work in an office behind a desk all day. I wanted a job that would be interactive, challenging and exciting. I also knew I wanted a job that would be important and would somehow contribute to the world in an important way. I thought being a teacher; particularly a teacher in the primary levels would fulfill those hopes and goals assuming I dedicate myself to becoming an effective teacher who has a positive influence on the lives of my students.
Becoming a teacher has always been one of my goals in life. What motivates me to become a teacher is that I love to help and teach children new things in life. I try to do this in a very unique way. I love to see kids happy. I think that being a teacher is a very rewarding job. Teachers should try to teach their students new things with a positive attitude, with enthusiasm and interest. Giving more attention to students of younger ages is especially important. It is a good feeling to see students become knowledgeable in all aspects and to prepare students to be successful for the good of society.
There comes a definite time in the life of every individual when a clear and conscious comprehension of identity must be established. A person must ask himself who he is, what his personal strengths are, and what path he wishes to pursue in order to shape his future and procure his dreams. Choosing a major is a very difficult decision to make for everyone. It has to be something that you can spend the rest of your life doing and should enjoy. When I think back to my elementary years through my senior year of high school, all I ever wanted to be was a dentist. I took the classes that would better prepare me in the dentistry field. There at the last second, I switched my major. It was first semester of my senior year of high school when my favorite teacher, Mrs. Fowler, asked me to teach Spanish to the kindergarten class at Piney View Elementary School. Without my teachers, this paper would not be possible and it is a known fact that good teachers are few and far between. The obstacle of finding a career is something we are all faced with at one time or another. Fortunately for me, I found this decision to be a very easy one, because I have a love for teaching. The decision of my career was clear. I was going to become a teacher.
Jean-Paul Sartre said, “Man is nothing else but what he makes of himself” (Myra, David, 402). According to him, personality is made by him/herself according to environment, religion, or society and everyone has a different belief and idea such as how they want to behave toward others or what I want to be on their own through their experience or life. Everyone has his or her own belief, philosophy, and dream but also I have my own concept. My philosophy of education revolves around why I want to be a teacher, my own philosophy of education, and what I want to do in future.
One reason schools have many subjects is to make their students well rounded; another is to help students develop their ability to reason. I agree with Rousseau’s idea that students should be taught to reason and should care about and respect others. Throughout one’s life they need to reason to make decisions. I think students should be taught history so that they do not remake the mistakes of the past. A person should also know how to read and write so that they can function in society. Thus, several attributes of education combine to create curriculum.
