My Hispanic Heritage Month

At this point in time reflecting on my past experiences I think the first thing I would do differently with my life is believe in myself and not doubt my decisions or my looks. Growing up I have always been made to feel ashamed of my dark skin, my bigger body and my hispanic heritage because it was different from what society had taught me and my family. If I knew no one would judge me I would embrace the darker pigmentation of my skin, accept my body for how it is and wear my heritage with pride. During the summer might go out swim Instead of staying inside and worrying about getting a little bit darker; I would stop wearing long sleeve shirts on the hottest day to avoid having people see the darkness of my skin. Ever since fourth grade, one of my best friends have been Taylor Elam. Over the years that we’ve been friends we’ve had some jokes. My mom loves Mexican food; Taylor used to not like mexican food very much. Whenever our families would go out to eat, my mom would suggest something mexican. Whenever mexican was suggested by my mom, Taylor would respond “of course Hope wants mexican,” and whenever someone would ask where we were going to eat Taylor would say, “Hope wants mexican!” which we would always laugh about.

In America today, we are faced with several different minority groups arriving to the United States. The most common of all minority groups are the Hispanics. America is known for their language being English, but as the year's approach, that language has faded and a new face in English language has taken over, it's called Spanish. I am going to tell you about a famous, yet kinda eerie celebration that takes place in mexico. This is a tradition celebrated by the Mexican Natives, most Mexican Americans (including myself) don’t even acknowledge this day, unless they happen to be visiting mexico at the time of this event.

Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the Latino contribution, and also lets us recognize that America's cultural diversity, and the contributions of all its citizens, have made our fabric strong throughout history. Latinos have prominently participated in building the West, in entertainment, business, education, civil rights, politics, and in our great American pastime of baseball. There are also a large number of magazines, newspapers, radio stations and other media outlets directed specifically towards the Latino market, confirming that this group provides a major influence on our culture.

On Friday I had the honor to visit the historical Rancho Los Cerritos House; also known as Rancho Los Cerritos or Casa de los Cerritos, in Long Beach, California, it was the largest and most impressive adobe residence raised in southern California during the Mexican period. The structure of the house was built in 1844 by merchant Jonathan Temple, a Yankee pioneer who became a Mexican citizen. Los Cerritos means "the little hills" in English. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1970. My family ritual is that we celebrate Dia de Los Tres Reyes Magos, translating to the Epiphany in English, every year either by ourselves or with family friends. We celebrate the Three Kings arriving to visit the baby Jesus and present gifts to him. To me, this holiday is better than Christmas. Why? The night before the holiday, I put my shoe out in a visible area and sometimes even put a bowl of oatmeal next to it. Hispanics have changed the life of technology and science a lot. A number of hispanic people have changed technology and science. An example of this would be Laura Saldivar, she is the executive director of Teach for America San Antonio. Teach for America San Antonio is a program that recruits top college graduates to teach in lower class schools. Dr. Antonia Novello was the first Hispanic and first woman to become a Surgeon General,the head of a public health service or of an armed forces medical service.In space exploration, there have been ten Hispanic astronauts, including Franklin Chang-Daz and Ellen Ochoa. Imagine someone is lost, standing in a checkout line at a corner drugstore. They need directions to get back on the road. The couple in front of them is having a very engaging conversation, fluently, in Spanish. Most would not even give an effort to talk or ask where to go, but why not? Too often the assumption is made that people who speak Spanish are immigrants, and do not speak English well. Hispanics are, persons of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American descent, other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race. Too often the assumption is made that Spanish-speakers are unamerican, lazy, receive low income, or are uneducated in any way. Hispanics are also demonized in the media as people who are stealing American jobs. That is the belief that some Americans associate with Hispanics.

Cinco de Mayo means the fifth of May. It is not an independence day for Mexico like most unknowledgeable people think. Mexican Independence Day is celebrated on the 15th of September. Mexico declared independence from Spain on the 24th of August 1821. Cinco de Mayo is not an American holiday either. Mexico and the United States savor this holiday because it is the day where Mexican peasants/ commoners defeated the French and Mexican traitor army that double them in size in Puebla, Mexico one hundred miles away from Mexico city on the 5th of May, 1862.

Have you ever thought of something you're so curious about? Something that your curiosity runs completely insane because you need the full information or a full story about what really happened or how did it happen ? Well I did, When a research paper was assigned about Spanish Culture I was only Interested into one topic and thats the History or background oh how the Mexican People receive their Independence. Like how America had it’s own story of its independence. Independence is about Freedom, the freedom to do what you want or to be who you are. Well like any other culture independence was very important to the spanish people, I believe its a celebration way bigger than an event like Cinco

The hispanic culture has many diverse, interesting, and unique views when it comes to the topic of death, dying, ghosts, and funeral arrangements. Because hispanic culture has many influences from not only modern day religious beliefs like the dominant religion of Roman Catholicism but also from ancient religions and culture such as the Maya and Aztec there is often times a mixed view on death. Similarly, because of the diversity in the history of hispanic culture there are many different cultural influences such as holidays like El dia de los muertos and long held folklore that makes the topic of death and dying in the hispanic culture very interesting.

Being Hispanic means a lot to me is part of my identity in this country and synonym of hard working individuals. We as Hispanics are taking a step further everyday taking more important positions and making our voice be heard in political, economic, and social issues. I would like to be part of that change, to create a more optimistic view of technology and see my name in articles, and for them to share my story as an immigrant and Hispanic. We are categorized as minority we are often stereotype, but we have one of the greatest future as a group culture ahead that soon or later have to be reach. I am extremely proud of my culture of be surround by hard working people that is willing to advance no matter how terrible the storm may look.

Being a Mexican-American, who was raised in the small town of Encarnación de Díaz – located at Los Altos de Jalisco, MX, – and then moved at the age of seventeen to Corpus Christi, TX, was not a smooth transition. The most difficult things I have encountered in my life must have been speaking a new language and adapting to a new type of living. I was fortunate enough to have amazing teachers who taught me to read, write and speak in English back in Mexico, but I was still not confident enough to speak the language when I arrived here. Although, many have told me that my English doesn’t sound as if I just moved here five years ago, I still believe I have so much more to learn.

In the Sacramento area, the community of Oak Park is putting together its own Dia de los Muertos celebration. However, instead of just an evening celebration, they have had month-long lectures and workshops free to the community that promotes the Mexican culture and practices such as Dia de los Muertos. In theory, they hope that the workshops would bring individual awarness and to engourage the Latino community to participate with their neighbors through the festival of Dia de los Muertos. Located in the heart of Oak Park, the organizers strive to deliver support to the largely unspoken Latino population, as well as promote Oak Park and its businesses that reside there. Overall, an ideal outcome would to bridge the gap between Oak Park and its neighboring cities, all while appreciating the art and culture of Mexican
