Middle Colonies

The colonies of New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut made up the New England colonies. Most of the Europeans in the New England colonies were there to escape the religious persecution they faced in England. They practiced a lot of different things in these colonies compared to the middle and southern and colonies of colonial america.

After the first few struggling settlements in the New World progressed, more and more colonies sprung from the untested North American soil. Eventually, there were three main categories to the European colonies. They were each unique, although one certain class stood in stark contrast to the other two. This group, the Middle colonies, was a halfway point between the New England and Southern colonies – and not just geographically. The Middle colonies extracted parts of its neighbors, like farming habits and spiritual sects, but the middle group managed to retain its own flavor.

1. There were several main differences among the British colonial regions. The New England colonies being colonized mainly for religion while the Middle colonies found wealth through industry, whereas the Southern colonies sought more trade and wealth opportunities through colonization. Economically, the New England colonies did not have trade as their primary focused, but still were involved in the processes of fishing, lumbering, and trapping, the Middle colonies found their wealth in lumbering and shipbuilding; the Southern colonies sought to grow and trade cash crops for wealth. The Northern colonies composed of [Separatist] Pilgrims, Puritans, and Quakers had more religious reasons for being founded, but not limited to refuge from religious persecution, and a holy society or “city upon a hill.” The Northern colonies were also religiously self-governing; one example being the Mayflower Compact, while the South had regular laws instituted. Demographically, the colonies started with an overwhelming white population over the blacks, but as the tobacco industry grew and slavery became an increasing practice, blacks began to outnumber the white population.

Everyone has an external force that motivates them in some way that allows them to be able to go about their everyday lives and fulfill their ambitions. Within the years of 1580 and 1763 this force took the form of God. Around this same time was when the Chesapeake and New England colonies were in the process of being founded. As a result, these two settlements did nothing without referencing their actions to God. Due to this heavy focus on God as the reason behind every aspect of their lives, chaos began to sprout soon after the settlers began settling and started living their new lives in the colonies.

With their economic variety, ethnic diversity, and political factionalism, the middle colonies were the most typically American of England’s thirteen Atlantic seaboard colonies.

In the Middle Colonies, the land was very fertile and flat which made for excellent farming. Although, large plantation-style farming did not develop completely because of the influence it received from the northern colonies. The Middle Colonies also had many ports making it a large products distributor. Their main exports were wheat and corn. What made the Middle Colonies different from the Southern Colonies was that the Middle Colonies relied more on indentured servants than slaves. Besides farming, colonists were also blacksmiths and tailors.

These natural mines gave the Middle Colonies many possible trades to pursue. The decent farmland gave the Middle Colonies the name the bread basket. The soil was good for growing one thing staple crops like barley, rye, wheat, oats, and corn. Like the New England Colonies the Middle Colonies to Advantage of the coast around them. The Coast and other bodies of water helped bring in trade in many port Cities like New York and Philadelphia.

The belief that silver and gold could be found in the Americas arose, causing the Europeans to settle and discover it for themselves, hoping to fulfill imperial goals. After the foundation of Jamestown in 1607, the Europeans kept pursuing their goals pertaining to opportunity, religious freedom, and wealth by building more colonies. The English North American colonies between the early and mid-eighteenth century did obtain distinguishable similarities yet an abundance of differences through the Southern, Middle, and New England colonies’ economical, social, and political aspects.

The first colony was Dutch which settled at the mouth of the Hudson River, more colonies that were included were New jersey, New York, Delaware, and Pennsylvania. The Middle Colonies farmed in order to make money as well, they farmed crops such as corn, wheat, and fruits. One of the biggest difference in the 3 different colonial regions was their Economies. Due to the rich and fertile soil that the Southern colonies possessed along with the warm climate of the area, farming was a main source of income. Wealthy Englishmen set up huge plantations with hundreds of acres of land in order to farm cash crops and other goods. The less fortunate would subsistence farm inland in hopes of one day being able to run a large plantation of their own. The economy in the middle colonies also relied on farming to an extent. Back in the Ice Age, glaciers grazed the rich soil from the Northern Colonies and deposited to the Middle Colonies. Although not many settlers were interested in agriculture, Dutch officials promoted farming by giving some few rich families large measure of land. Their fertile soil allowed farmers to grow so much wheat and grains. This is how the Middle Colonies received their “breadbasket colonies” name. In the 1400s France, Britain, The Dutch and Span were rapidly expanding their empires globally. These nations were vigorously looking for new sources of income and resources for their nation. Years previously, these nations participated in extremely costly wars in Europe. These wars, not only had a negative effect on their citizens morality, they also depleted the governments fiscal positions. The solution to this (money) problem was to exploit the resources of the “New World” by setting up colonies and territories that could send cheap raw material back to their respected countries to be refined into finished products that in return could be taken to market.

Colonial America is separated into three groups, New England, Middle Colonies, and the South. New England consisted of New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. Its colder than the other colonies, and made up of mountains, and rivers. The cold weather had a great effect on how houses in the New England colonies were built. The houses were normally plain rectangle 2 story houses, with a basement. The second story normally jutted out over the first floor, which kept the snow from piling up outside the door, which could have prevented the inhabitants from being able to leave their house. The basements were cold, and they colonists kept food located there. The fireplace was built in the middle of the house on both the first and second floors, which helped heat up the house quicker, and keep it warm. The roofs were tilted to allow snow to slide off. Its soil was very rocky, which made it very difficult for them to grow any crops. Its proximity to the ocean made fishing and ship building the main source of income. Women were also tin makers. The religion of this colony was Puritan, with the exception of Rhode Island. Puritans were very strict with themselves, and didn’t allow any other types of religions. They believed in schools, so everyone would be able to read the bible. The had a set of rules called the Blue Laws, which was printed on blue paper. Each of colonies was established for different purpose. Some colonies, such as Pennsylvania, were founded by individual proprietors [proprietor: a person who owned a colony as a result of receiving a land grant from the king] , or owners, who received large land grants from the king. New York was originally founded by the Dutch and later captured by the British. The New England colonies were started by English Protestants called Puritans because they wanted to purify the Church of England. They wanted to create "a city upon a hill," a more perfect society based on their religious beliefs. Georgia began as a home for the poor and for criminals found guilty of not paying their debts.(1)
