Ethically, marijuana seems acceptable, because it is no more addictive or dangerous than any drug already legalized and beneficially challenges preconceived ideas of addiction. Medically, it could be beneficial to a large quantity of people looking for relief from pain, emotional or physical, who are hesitant about using highly addictive pills. Economically, marijuana could possibly provide a much-needed boom to America’s economy. With all these positive aspects of legalizing marijuana, it is hard to see why it is still criminalized. Misconceptions about cannabis has caused many Americans to be weary of it, however, by eliminating these prejudices against the drug and producing more supporters, America as a whole will be greatly benefitted.

The use of Medical Marijuana is a widely argued and criticized issue that is at the forefront of issues affecting our community and lives in this day and age. During my search for and against the use and legalization of Marijuana, I have been able to find extensive research which either supports or opposes the belief that Medical Marijuana should be an available option for medical treatment and the recreational use of it. I have committed myself to maintain an open mind while researching both the pro and con on the use of Marijuana, and have concluded that Medical Marijuana should be available for use. As for my opinion on the recreational use of Marijuana I have yet to decide whether it should be legal.

The debate regarding the legalization of marijuana has been controversial for decades. Advocates for the legalization of the drug have argued of the supposed benefits of consuming marijuana, such as medicinal purposes. However, the dangers of marijuana are well known by the scientific community and society. Diseases, deterioration in psychological function, vehicle accidents, and paranoia are among negative consequences. All from a product that has revealed no benefit. For most conditions for which marijuana has claimed benefits, we already have existing safe medications. Marijuana should be illegal because it unhealthy for relationships, it’s opposes dangers for public safety, and lack of medical evidence.

Throughout our history there has been an exhausting amount of controversy over legalizing marijuana. Thankfully, studies are beginning to show that over half of our country is in favor of legalizing marijuana and 78% are in favor of legalizing marijuana for medicinal uses (Nagourney & Lyman, 2013). Those individuals whom are not for either side sometimes ask, “What are the side effects to using marijuana and what qualities does it have that can help with medicinal uses?” I will, throughout this paper, discuss more in detail answers to these questions. In regards to my research, I predict that decriminalizing marijuana is in the best interest of the society and that it is not an addictive drug that leads to violence. Within this research paper I will discuss marijuana’s history, whether studies have shown that decriminalizing marijuana for medicinal uses or recreational uses does us more harm than good. Lastly, I will discuss how other countries are governing their citizens using marijuana and if we see their system is working or not.

Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug worldwide. As the amount of marijuana use increases, legalization of the drug is a topic debated, discussed and researched by our government, health professionals, and law enforcement. I personally don’t agree with the legalization of the drug knowing how dangerous its usage can be. The effects marijuana has on its users, I believe, is cause for concern along with the other known problems that arise with its use.

Marijuana is one of the most misunderstood forms of medication. Since there is so much controversy about whether it is harmful or beneficial, there is naturally a fear of unknown side effects(Strickland, CNN). Although supporters of medicinal and recreational marijuana significantly outnumber its opposers, it’s prohibition is just now beginning to waver. Many doctors and officials are still fighting to keep the ban. Little did most of America know, cannabis could be found in most medicine cabinets in the early 1900’s before it became illegal(Reiman & Burnett, Drug Policy Alliance). It has been clinically proven that marijuana is less habit-forming than other opiate drugs, and there is absolutely no risk of fatal overdose(Gupta, CNN). Research proves that the plant is able to treat and cure numerous types of illnesses.

Marijuana has been consumed ever since the human civilization started. However, according to Zimmermann (2014), large amounts of research on medical marijuana started around the early 1970s. Through articles and videos on the Internet, social media, and even school, people are becoming more aware of the presence of medical marijuana. Even children are being informed through D.A.R.E. programs offered in many elementary schools across the United States. This may come off as good, but the program is not telling the children about are the medical benefits that come with the use of marijuana. Medical marijuana is still a drug that should be taken with prior knowledge and caution among any users. However, the science behind the benefits of medical marijuana is becoming clearer through the research of scientists in Ivy League schools. This paper examines the science behind medical marijuana, while comparing and contrasting its positive and negative effects.
