Martin Luther King Jr. was a social activist and a Baptist minister. In the 1950’s he led the civil rights movement in the United States until his death by assassination in 1968. Dr. King played a pivotal role in ending the legal segregation of the African-American’s and the creator of the 1964 and voting rights act of 1965. Till this day, Dr. King is considered to be the most influential leader in history of the American Civil Right movement. – why you made this choice- Dr. King was as Michael King Jr. on January 15, 1929 in Georgia. King had an older sister named Willie Christine and a younger brother names Alfred Daniel Williams King. All three children grew up in a loving and secure home. As many parents, the kings couldn’t shield him completely from racism. King Sr. and his family fought against racial prejudice. He discouraged any sense of class superiority in his children, because of this it left lasting impression on Martin Jr. Even though Dr. King grew up in a home where religious was a big part of their life, it made little impression to him. When his grandmother died when he was 12, it was traumatic for him. He attempted to commit suicide by jumping from a second story window from his family home. As Dr. King grew up he became a precocious student and skipped ninth and eleventh grade. He started college at the age of 15, and even though his family was involved in church, he questioned religion. Martin was uncomfortable with the overly emotional displays of religious worship. Because of this he did not want to followed in his father’s footsteps and become a minister. But in his junior year of college he took a bible class. Taking the class renewed his faith and began his career in ministry. Martin Luther King earned his degree in sociology from Morehouse College.
