Martin Luther King Jr Accomplishments

Martin Luther King was a honourable leader during his time he was famous for his speech “ I had a dream’ In this speech he calls for an end to racism in the United States and preaches his vision of a society in which race was not an issue in how people were treated or in how they were allowed to live their lives. Because of this speech the Negros respected him. He said this speech in front of millions who came to listen and for that he is a very brave man.

“Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Baptist minister and activist who was a leader in the Civil Rights Movement. Dr. King overcame many adversities or abstacles, he wanted to teach the ways to Overcoming adversity. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Educate many things about overcoming adversity. Dr. King taught that in order to overcome the odds a person must have a strong will and non-violent. Adversity is difficult to overcome and it was something that Dr. King and other black African-American folk’s experience, their adversity was racism’s. King also taught that adversity can also be overcome by working as a groups, one person is not enough to overcome an adversity.

Martin Luther King Jr. is renowned as the leader of the great Civil Rights Movement. Throughout his letter from Birmingham Jail, King employs pathos, ethos, and logos to persuade his audience to join forces in order to overcome the physical and mental barriers of segregation.

Many people think that Martin Luther King, Jr. is a great warrior because no one stood up against the government, but he stood up against oppression against his race. Even when, threatened he kept fighting : “On September 30, 1956, Martin Luther King, Jr.’s house was bombed by segregationists in retaliation for the success of the Montgomery Bus Boycott”. He didn’t run when he got attacked; He tried to save everyone. For example, when he experienced terrorism by a bad squad, he didn’t run away. I might be very scared, but Martin Luther King, Jr. didn’t run away and he tried to protect people from terror. Martin Luther King, Jr. knew many people thought oppression against race has to be changed : “ When he was a young man, Martin Luther King wanted a career helping people. He felt that as a minister, he could speak out “against racial injustice”. Following the example of the Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. King chose nonviolence as the keystone of his fight for civil rights”.

Martin Luther King Jr. was one of many great civil rights activists that have fought for equal rights. Throughout the 1960’s he persevered through many things such as, “On March 7, 1965, a civil rights march, planned from Selma to Alabama's capitol in Montgomery, turned violent as police with nightsticks and tear gas met the demonstrators as they tried to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge. King was not in the march, however the attack was televised showing horrifying images of marchers being bloodied and severely injured. Seventeen demonstrators were hospitalized leading to the naming the event "Bloody Sunday." Everyone, young or old, gay or straight, women or man, everyone should get equal rights and this man shows why and how we can do it.

Without a doubt, Martin Luther King Junior was and is an important figure of our time. Martin Luther spent his life as a non-violent fighter for African American rights. (McGill 1). King was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. Throughout his childhood he had doubts about his religion, even though he came from a long line of pastors. Martin did well in school, he was an A average student, senior class president, and was given the “Most Outstanding Student” award. He attended Booker T. Washington High School, where he was also held the position of quarter back of the school’s football team. Then, in 1945 he enrolled in Atlanta’s Morehosue College at the age of only 15 years old because he skipped 11th and 12th grade. Then, in 1951 he attended Boston University until 1955. After college he became a Baptist minister and civil right activist. (Important Dates of MLK 44).

Martin Luther King Jr. was a civil rights leader throughout the 1950s and 1960s. King supported the belief in non-violent protests and peaceful demonstrations. King also believed that nonviolent protest would be the most effective way to fight against a racist and unjust society. King is well known for campaigns to end racial segregation and racial inequality in the United States. In today’s world Martin Luther King Jr. is seen as a hero who guided others with his love and compassion for peaceful demonstrations and non-violence but during his time people saw him as a villain due to the amount of power King had in bringing about change and those who hated change, did not support King. King’s power when he was alive, scared people because they didn’t know what to expect next, but after his death the roles turned and the people started to control him.

In America, there are only two people who have a federal holiday dedicated to their date of birth: George Washington and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. While George Washington was the first president of the United States, it is obvious why his birthday is a day of importance but what about Martin Luther King Jr.? Why does he deserve a holiday? Not only was Martin Luther King Jr. a popular leader during the 1960’s civil rights movement, he also became a pivotal figure in American history. It is no wonder why author Taylor Branch named his famous, award-winning civil rights trilogy “America in the King Years”.
