Humans have been using medicine to salve our wounds, physical and mental, since near the beginning of our species. It is something we used throughout the ages though we haven’t always used the same means achieve it. We’ve used “magic” elixirs, prayer, mercury, lobotomies, and other things that just weren’t effective methods of healing anyone. Today, we have vaccines, pills, antibiotics, and other medicine that has kept us going thus far in life. The medicine I want to inform you about today is Marijuana. Marijuana holds many medical uses. One of the medical uses of Marijuana is helping those plagued with glaucoma. Glaucoma is a disease that causes optic nerve damage resulting in the gradual loss of sight. Chronic pain is intense suffering/agony that can persist between weeks to years. Currently, there are an estimated more than 3 million cases of chronic pain in the United States each year. That is where the Marijuana comes into play. An article on the JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association states the following for Marijuana being used for chronic pain as well as other medical problems,”Aside from nausea and appetite stimulation, indications for which there are 2 FDA-approved cannabinoids (dronabinol and nabilone), chronic pain, neuropathic pain, and spasticity associated with multiple sclerosis are the indications for medical marijuana supported by high-quality evidence”(Hill). As usual, I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t state the drawbacks to using Marijuana to treat chronic pain. The same article states,”Medical marijuana and cannabinoids have significant potential health risks, such as addiction and worsening of psychiatric illnesses such as some anxiety disorders, mood disorders, psychotic disorders, and substance use disorders”(Hill). Currently, there are no ways to combatant these side
There are so many diseases that can and can’t be curable. However, there are medications that can help ease the pain from different conditions. There is one medication that can be prescribed for pain is medical marijuana. Even though it’s illegal in some states, but marijuana has become the most profitable and healing vital substance. Medical marijuana, also refer to as medical cannabis, is a good herbal therapy according to health practitioners("Medical marijuana for pain and depression"). Medical marijuana has been around for centuries. Physicians back then used medical marijuana for illnesses and disorders("Medical marijuana for pain and depression"). This is used mostly for the GI System disorders (gastrointestinal
The people that I do know that abuse pain medication also smoke marijuana. I do think it can improve other medical conditions. My mother suffers from Parkinson's disease. We have researched the use of medical marijuana for treatment of the tremors and shakes that come along with the disease, and it has been proven to help. There was a significant improvement in muscle rigidity, pain, and tremors associated with Parkinson's disease when subjects were tested in an experiment in Israel (McCall, 2014). She now knows that this can be an alternative to her treatment if her other medications do not
Marijuana has a long medical history, ranging from its anecdotal use in ancient times, through medical prescribing in the 19th and early 20th centuries to modern. "The first record of cannabis as a medicine can be found in the oldest Chinese pharmacopeia, Shen Nag Ben Cao Jing, written in the Eastern Han Dynasty (25 AD to 220 AD). It was indicated for rheumatic pain, malaria, constipation, and disorders of the female reproductive system" (Greenwell, 2012, Vol. 26 Issue 1). Pain is one of the most common reasons that medical cannabis is recommended. "Scientists have long known that tetrahydracannabinol (THC), the active ingredient in marijuana, is an effective pain killer" (Mcdonagh, 2003). Studies of medical marijuana show significant
Medical marijuana has been proven to be a very curable substance. According to Donald Abrams (N.D), as referenced in Kim Ann Zimmermann (2015), “the idea that marijuana may have therapeutic effects is rooted in solid science. Marijuana contains 60 active ingredients known as cannabinoids. The body naturally makes its own form of cannabinoids to modulate pain” .This supports the idea that marijuana can help individuals medically. It can also be helpful for many who need its medical help .Many people will be having the chance to buy and use it if it gets legalized. Marijuana is not in reach of everyone because when individuals want to buy weed they need to get a doctor’s prescription or have an excuse and not everyone can fake an excuse or get a doctors prescription; as a result, many people cannot purchase it except illegally. As long as marijuana is not legalized many individuals won’t be able to use it. Zimmermann (2015) explains that the primary psychoactive cannabinoid in marijuana is THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol. THC is responsible for the psychological effects of marijuana. Moreover, the THC targets cb1 which is located in the brain, nervous system, liver, kidney and lungs the cb1 becomes active most of the time to relive pain (Kim Zimmerman, 2015). Many people call that process of reliving pain as getting “high”. In fact, most of the people who use marijuana use it to feel “high”. Because, when someone
Marijuana is a drug that divides people. Some people claim it as the wonder drug of the '90s, capable of relieving the symptoms of many serious illnesses. Others curse the day the cannabis plant was ever discovered. From pain relief to stimulating the appetites of patients on chemotherapy, marijuana seems to have plenty going for it as a medicine. The legalization of marijuana is a large controversy in many parts of the world today, but the obvious negative effects that the drug induces has kept it from being legalized. Many researchers have a strong positive attitude towards marijuana. It has been said that the drug is “worth investigating and even providing as a medicine for pain relief, severe
Legalizing marijuana may serve as a medicine for ill and unhealthy people. Marijuana is famously known for its ability to relieve pain for people that suffer with ADDs/ ADHD, Alzheimer’s, seizures, migraines, and physical pain relief like knee or back pain. In addition, marijuana can be used to, “treat those disorders but also cannabinoids, the active components of marijuana kill cancer cells and inhibit tumor growth!” (Torres). American states like Colorado and Washington have already legalized the use of marijuana, not to mention
Should doctors look more into using medical marijuana for chronic pain and other disorders? Scientist have stated that medical marijuana can treat multiple medical issues but they do come with side effects. Cannabidiol also known as CBD and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) have many health benefits that patients should take into consideration in order to alleviate the pain associated with their medical issues. Rather than dealing with multiple different doses of medication THC is psychoactive while CBD is not psychoactive, both benefit different but similar issues but gives patients a lower chance to become addicted to their prescribed medications.
One of the major challenges with patient management and care is the alleviation and or reduction of pain. Pain and discomfort accompanies most medical procedures and consequently strenuous efforts are made by medical doctors provide pain relief to their patients. The tools available to doctors are very limited and most have undesirable side effects. Some of the more potent pain relievers have the potential to become addictive. Consequently, there is a need for a pain relief option that relieves pain but it is not addictive. Marijuana provides doctors with a powerful pain relief option with limited negative side effects. The potency of marijuana as a pain reliever makes it a valuable alternative to more potent and addictive pain relievers.
“Marijuana—also called weed, herb, pot, grass, bud, Ganja, Mary Jane, and a vast number of other slang terms—is a greenish-gray mixture of the dried, shredded leaves and flowers of Cannabis sativa—the hemp plant. Some users smoke marijuana in hand-rolled cigarettes called joints; many use pipes, water pipes (sometimes called bonds), or marijuana cigars called blunts (often made by slicing open cigars and replacing some or all of the tobacco with marijuana). Marijuana can also be used to brew tea and, particularly when it is sold or consumed for medicinal purposes, is frequently mixed into foods ("edibles") such as brownies, cookies, or candies. In addition, concentrated resins containing high doses of marijuana’s active ingredients, including honey-like "hash oil," waxy "budder," and hard amber-like "shatter," are increasingly popular among both recreational and medical users.” Marijuana is actually very useful for life. However, many people who use marijuana as interests that are not as good as consume’s narcotics made into cigarettes, etc.. But it is not good for health as it can damage the antibody It is better if the use of marijuana as well as possible use in the medical world to help cure disease or relieve pain. (Abuse, 2016a, 2016b)
Some people like to call it marijuana, some people like to call it weed, and some people like to call it cannabis. But have you ever took the time to get to know about this drug? Marijuana has been introduced to the world all the way back to 2337 BC. At first the focus was on it’s power as a medication for people to use such as rheumatism, gout, malaria,
On any given day in 1902 a person could walk into a pharmacy and receive a small bottle of heroin to treat their cough. Today we know that this is insane and medicine has come a long way from people giving hard core drugs to their children to treat whooping cough. We have learned that one drug that has been illegal everywhere can be used as a wonderful medical and only medical drug. That drug is marijuana, which has not only changed the way illnesses like epilepsy are being treated; but has also boosted the economy.
You get a phone call saying that your mom just died. You don’t even have to ask what caused her death, you already know the answer. Your mom has been fighting pneumonia and respiratory infections. The reason why she got these lung diseases was because she was smoking marijuana. Who would have expected that this drug would lead to death. Many people are becoming addicted to marijuana, leading them to not be successful in life. People want to have their own rights, but if everyone decided to do what they wanted, our nation wouldn’t be where it is today. This is why legalizing this drug would lead to more addicts in our country, uneducated people, and deaths.
Marijuana has been used medicinally for over five thousand years worldwide to treat various ailments including malaria, rheumatic pain, diarrhea, diabetes, tuberculosis, asthma, elephantiasis, anemia, and rabies. It was used as an analgesic and anesthetic during the Roman Empire. As early as 1850 Untied States physicians recognized marijuana’s medical values as a treatment for neuralgia, tetanus, typhus, leprosy, gout, and insanity. In February 1997, a study conducted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) found five areas where medical marijuana could have a therapeutic value; Wasting away syndrome, nausea and
Many diseases cannot be cured but most doctors can prescribe pain killers that can cause serious internal damage. Marijuana is also used to help ease chronic pain, nausea, muscle spasms, and loss of appetite (Anderson 334). With this knowledge further medical research and testing should be done to help those in need. Marijuana has been used medicinally since the 1800s. Marijuana was recognized as a medicinal drug and was listed in the United States Pharmacopeia from 1850 to 1942.
Marijuana is very important for medical use. I read from WebMd.com that Three puffs a day of marijuana, helps people with chronic nerve pain due to injury or surgery. If people like this take this drug they would feel less pain and sleep better. Mark Ware is an assistant professor of anesthesia and family medicine at McGill University in Montreal. He said, "About 10% to 15% of patients attending a chronic pain clinic use cannabis as part of their pain control strategy.” From businessinsider.com it can decreases the symptoms of a severe seizure disorder known as Dravet's Syndrome. Dravet syndrome is
