“Macbeth” Soliloquy Log 1.3.128 “Two truths are told…” The three witches have told Macbeth that he will be Thane of Cawdor as well as becoming king. Macbeth believes that the witches predictions will come true because he has just been announced the Thane of Cawdor. Macbeth is very confused. The tone of this soliloquy is one of bafflement. In fact, he proclaims that the witches’ fortune “cannot be ill, cannot be good” (130). Given that Macbeth had been told about being king, he’s had terrible thoughts about murdering Duncan which “unfix [his] hair” and “make [his] seated heart knock at [his] ribs” (135,136). Macbeth does not want to kill his friend, yet he still desires to become king. It is very ironic that his emotions and mind-set towards Duncan who is his “friend” has changed because of the fortune that the witches have given Macbeth. 1.7.1. “If it were done when ‘tis done” Macbeth and his wife are at their castle. Duncan has shown up for dinner as Macbeth has left to rethink the murder that Lady Macbeth has plotted for Duncan. Here Lady Macbeth adds that she wants to be a man because she scorns upon Macbeths lack of courage; she tells him he is “a coward." Lady Macbeth also says to him that her own lack of pity would expand to murdering her own child as it suckled at her breast. With this she admits that "the milk of human kindness" is absent in her. Her harshness of Macbeth’s cowardliness convinced Macbeth that he should take on the horrid deed. Macbeth is still
To begin, the witches are the catalyst to Macbeth’s crimes because the convince him that he will become king. Macbeth first meets the witches while returning from a gruesome battle and it is safe to say that they greet him with some audacious titles. They initially greet him as the Thane of Glamis and the Thane of Cawdor, but it is their final greeting which has the greatest effect on Macbeth. The witches hail Macbeth as someone “that shalt be king hereafter!” (1.3.53). This ignites a fire inside Macbeth, who is an immensely ambitious person. He begins to fantasize about the luxurious life he would have if he were the king of Scotland and he suddenly has the temptation to kill King Duncan. Although the witches’ prediction is favourable, Macbeth has no reason to believe them, at least until one of their other predictions turns out to be true. This
At the beginning of the play Macbeth is unwilling to kill King Duncan while Lady Macbeth is convinced that she must compel him to do so. Macbeth is told by three witches that he will become thane of Cawdor, thane of Glamis and King of Scotland. Macbeth believes the prophecies since he is already thane of Glamis and is Ross later informs him that Macbeth is now thane of Cawdor. Macbeth wants to be king, but hopes
Macbeth’s conflicts all begin when the witches declare that he will become the thane of Glamis, Cawdor, and eventually king. When the first two prophecies are fulfilled, Macbeth cannot help but imagine fulfilling the third phase as well: by murdering Duncan. After all, who does not want to be king? This is a clear example of how the witches try to lure Macbeth
Macbeth heard the prophecy of him being Thane of Cawdor and King. He was determined to make that prophecy happen. Macbeth tells his wife that he does not want to kill King Duncan anymore, (Act I Scene VII line 33) Macbeth tells her it is his duty to keep King Duncan safe while he is in his home. His wife then talks him into doing the deed by telling him to, “Screw his courage to the sticking place”.
In life, people will always make wrong decisions and these wrong decisions lead to destructive consequences. Macbeth does this in the play “Macbeth”. A tragic hero is a literary character who makes a judgment error that leads to his/her own destruction. Fate and external forces bring on the tragedy in a tragic hero’s life. And in William Shakespeare’s play “Macbeth”, Macbeth goes through situations in his life that portray him as a tragic hero: his ambition, the witches prophecy, and Lady Macbeth show the development of Macbeth as a tragic hero.
Furthermore, Macbeth is unconfident with murdering the King, his conscience reasons with him to not commit innocent murder. He says, "He's here in double trust: First I am his kinsman and his subject, Strong both against the deed: and then, as his host, Who should against this murder shut the door, Not bear the knife myself" (I.vii.12-14). While this fulfills Lady Macbeth’s earlier doubts of Macbeth’s kindness; she has no choice but to challenge his manhood and mentality. All the while showing her own strength and cruelty by saying she’d kill her own child, "I have given suck; and know how tender 'tis to love the babe that milks me: I would, while it was smiling in my face, Have pluck'd my nipple from his boneless gums / And dash'd the brains out, had I sworn / As you have done this"
However, his desire for power begins to devour such traits replacing him with nothing but indecisiveness and guilt. The three witches planted a rooted seed by declaring Macbeth as Thane of Cawdor and future king of Scotland. As one prophecy came true, the now, Thane of Cawdor is tempted and drowns himself with the thought of sitting on the throne. Hopeful but impatient, Macbeth resolves to kill Duncan. It was fate that Macbeth will be king, but it was free will when he decided to steal the crown by murdering the king. Had Macbeth not encountered the witches, he would not have thought about being king. The witches’ appearance was, although minimal, an irreplaceable factor to the
Three evil witches predict that Macbeth will become Thane of Cawdor and even King of Scotland. Macbeth let go their prophecies, but he is after promoted to Thane of Cawdor. However, Macbeth is a good and loyal relative who would never harm the King. If it was not for the outside forces, he would have lived happily as Thane of Cawdor. Macbeth does not want to kill King Duncan. Macbeth fears the witches’ message means that he will kill the king
Macbeth later is encountered by witches that lead into him rethinking a new prophecy for power over Scotland, “All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor!” (1.3.54-55). Macbeth is perplexed by the witches use of Thane of Cawdor because he is widely known as the Thane of Glamis. Macbeth takes the witches’ twisted prophecy as joke and moves on. Eventually in the play we learned that Macbeth’s loyalty is viewed by Duncan in a special way that Duncan rewarded Macbeth by naming him the Thane of Cawdor. By this Macbeth’s ambition changes as his outer influence becomes stronger, Macbeth is unsure of what future endeavors are before him and decides to seek out the opinion of his wife from a letter. The letter is an important piece of character development for Macbeth, this is the first time we learn that he has the intention of murdering King Duncan. “To know my deed, ‘twere best not know myself.”
At the start of the play, we see Macbeth as one of the strongest and most loyal generals of the king who was later named the Thane of Cawdor. Shortly after, Macbeth meets the 3 witches and is told the prophecy of him becoming king at one point in the future by the third witch. This is what sparks Macbeth´s monstrous thoughts that he has throughout the rest of the play. His lack of patience and his ambition to gain power leads to him wanting to speed up the prophecy he was told and seize the throne. To do this, Macbeth plans to murder the king in his sleep and he does
Unchecked ambition can drive one to surpass all boundaries of decency which eventually results in severe consequences. Throughout Shakespeare’s play, there were many instances where Macbeth’s ambition resulted in the deaths of numerous people. Macbeth confirms his intentions when he states “My thought, whose murder yet is but fantastical shakes so my single state of man that function is smother’d in surmise; and nothing is but what is not” (1. 3. 149-152). Macbeth thinks of killing Duncan immediately when he is informed that the king has provided Macbeth with the title of the Thane of Cawdor. With the news that two of the three prophecies have come true makes Macbeth keen and greedy to fulfill the third one which in Macbeth’s opinion requires him to murder King
After finding out that the Thane of Cawdor had died, King Duncan planed to give the title to Macbeth. The Thane of Cawdor was a huge honour and showed how respected and brave Macbeth was according to Duncan. This is an example of how Macbeth was a good man before hearing the witches prophecies. The idea of murdering King Duncan sounded insane when Lady Macbeth brought it up. Macbeth’s unwillingness to murder Duncan was evident when he said, “ Not bear the knife myself. Besides, this Duncan / Hath borne his faculties so meek, hath been / So clear in his great office” (1.7.17-18). After hearing Lady Macbeth’s plans to kill King Duncan, Macbeth immediately refused. He says how Duncan has been so great in office and how there’s no reason to kill him. This quote developes Macbeth’s character of being sensible and caring. Macbeth never had malicious intents but was a victim of some unfortunate circumstances which had a negative effect on his mind. One of those unfortunate situations Macbeth was forced in was, hearing the witches
Macbeth’s first vital error is believing everything the weird sisters prophesied, before taking into account what they say, and thinking about it even if some of it may have been true. When the Witches and Macbeth first meet, they make two statements, that take Macbeth by surprise; first that he will become the Thane of Cawdor followed by the prophecy that he would become King of Scotland. The prophecies of the Witches later come true, when Macbeth does become Thane of Cawdor, after a discovery was made that the previous Thane was a traitor. Subsequently, since the first prophecy came true, Macbeth believed that he would be the King of Scotland. His mind drifts into thoughts about murdering Duncan, “Whose murder is yet is but fantastical” (1.3.139) yet manages to disturb his “Single state of man that functions” (1.3.140).
Initially Macbeth is a war hero, saving Scotland from the King of Norway. Macbeth is a warrior, not a killer nor does he want to rule however he is informed by three witches called the weird sisters that he shall become Thane of Cawdor although he is not the heir to the throne. After telling his wife, Lady Macbeth, this prophecy the two debates as to whether the prophecy could even become true considering the current king, Duncan, is a satisfactory leader and his son is appointed as heir. Lady Macbeth convinces Macbeth to kill Duncan and then give a suggestion to the other lords to place him as Duncan’s successor. Macbeth, who knows the prophecy will happen either way agrees to his wife’s plan however he does not know that this decision will be
He also realises how good Duncan has been to him and decides against the awful plan. Lady Macbeth then enters to change his mind. When she hears Macbeth is against the murder she is outraged and calls him a coward. She then emasculates him by questioning his manhood, telling him “When you durst do it, then you were a man” and questions him about his mental state considering him to be metaphorically hung-over. In the time that the play is set, Lady Macbeth talking to Macbeth in the way she is would have been quite shocking because men were considered very superior over women and it would have been very disrespectful. Macbeth asks Lady Macbeth about the possibility of failure and she replies “But screw you courage to the sticking-place and we’ll not fail”. Lady Macbeth is evidently the main driving factor for the murder of Duncan so far in the play and we can see Macbeth is reluctant to carry out the task. Lady Macbeth uses some very powerful imagery in the scene when confronting Macbeth that may shock the audience. She almost convinces Macbeth that she is fully behind the plan by talking about brutally killing her baby if that were the case. She says “Have pluck’d my nipple from his boneless gums, and dash’d the brains out, had i sworn as you have done this.” The reasons for Lady Macbeths cruel nature is unclear though we are told “I have given suck” by Lady Macbeth but are not informed any more of this baby so it is possible that we are
