Love And Love: The Importance Of Love

Love is a force that inspires us to feel more, do more, and sometimes sacrifice for the object of our attention. Poems, music, relationships are all written in the name of love. There are six kinds of love, according to the ancient Greeks:

Love is said to be one of the most desired things in life. People long for it, search for it, and crave it. It can come in the form of partners, friends, or just simply family. To some, love is something of a necessity in life, where some would rather turn a cold shoulder to it. Love can be the mixture of passion, need, lust, loyalty, and blood. Love can be extraordinary and breathtaking. Love being held so high can also be dangerous. Love can drive people to numerous mad things with it dangerously so full of craze and passion.

The definition of love can be varied from person to person and from culture to culture. When a woman is in love, it can be seen in her eyes. Women are usually mesmerized by what their loved one is doing. An action as simple as driving can be mesmerizing to a woman. When men are in love, they touch their woman in public. The men make sure their partner feels love by holding their hand or hugging them. Love can be defined as putting someone else’s feelings before their own. It means that there isn’t another care in the world except for that  person. For example, the man tends to worry about their partner in the littlest circumstances; even when the other person just has a tiny cold.

To me Love, is one of the hardest words I could ever try to define, as everyone has different perspectives, definitions and believes for this one word. It has also been a word that has been highly overused, and though it does have a set definition, I can't seem to fully define it. I do know however that love is not what love is portrayed as to be by the media. A trip to paris or a romantic dinner by the beach on a star-y night, does not show me love on its own, it show me money. To me love is a special feeling that is hard to describe unless one has felt it before. Love is not something that you search for but something that comes to you when you least expect it and most need it. Ideally theres a deeper emotional aspect that makes up love, one that is also displayed

Love is patient, love is kind.  It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.  It is not rude, it is not self-seeking.  It is not easily angered; it keeps no records of wrong.  Love does not delight in evil

From the time I was born, I had always had an interest in males. I vividly remember being in my elementary classroom where we had to pick reading buddies. I instantly went to the first older boy I saw, and was immediately disappointed when the teacher did not let me read with him. Of course, this did not stop me, and I continued my kindergarten career chasing after a boy in my class, making him hold my hand every time we went to recess. Alas, this crush continued until middle school, and I will always remember this boy as my first-first love at sight.

By searching for happiness through these methods, gruesome deaths of themselves or their loved ones result, leaving the seekers of happiness unable to fulfill their lives since they lack love. In Sappho's "Poem 16", She states, "Some men say an army of horse and some men say an army on foot and some say and army of ships is the most beautiful things on the black earth. But I say it is what you love" (Carson 638). To Sappho, agents of war do not portray beauty, but love does. War and the things that come along with it have trivial value, but beauty resides in seeking and nurturing loved ones. This serves as the way to contentment. In contrast, Agamemnon found value in war over love by sacrificing his daughter to give his men safe passage to war, which resulted in his wife murdering him upon his return home, and to add to this tragedy, when the chorus of Agamemnon finds Clytaemnestra standing over Agamemnon's bloody corpse with a sword in her hand, she admits this: "I don't deny it, no. He had no way to flee or fight his destiny" (Fagles 693). Agamemnon seeks gratification in his life by sacrificing his daughter for the sake of his men finding glory in war and power over the Trojans, but in doing so he never has the ability to exercise his power because his actions actually led to his own bloody death, a death that left him helpless in the end. Jason depicts another example of a gruesome end by striving for power. By leaving Medea for a princess that would give him a position

The world tends to remove around love. Movies, books, tv shows, and your everyday life all include love. Popular media almost always displays love to be intense and bright and cheerful. Couples in romance movies don’t fight but instead make out under the stars, and the whole world freezes for a while. But anyone who has ever loved before knows that it is not all rainbows, sunshine, and bunnies. Sometimes it’s wanting to end things so bad you can’t stand it. Sometimes it’s having to let go. Sometimes it’s having to step back and reevaluate.

Far too often, we misuse or hear other people misuse the word love. We use the word love so freely, that we commonly use it when saying things such as “I love going to the movies” or “I love this apple pie”. When we use the word love in this context, we are using it without understanding the true meaning, the way God intended us to. So, what is love, and what is the significance of love to God?

Webster’s Dictionary defines the word love with several definitions. However, the definitions of love are interpreted in different ways. Even though love is a small abstract four-letter-word, it affects those who experience it in various ways. Love is the one unifying word that binds us together as humans as we strive for its meaning. Love can bring life into the world, and yet it can end life as well, as it is an emotion that is felt so differently by so many people. For me, love is defined as the love of God, the love of family, and the love for a significant other.

Love only. I attempt to make it a point and live by that code, and it gets hard sometimes, but what’s life without a little challenge. I wouldn’t say that if given the opportunity I’d take the more dangerous and risky road, because I would be lying, but I’m not entirely opposed to walking on thin ice every now and then. It’s not my greatest quality, but it’s a dominant one. My close friends would undoubtedly describe me as the “mom” of the group, but others would possibly say something more along the lines of “a lost puppy”. I’d love to say that my eloquence is ineffable, but unfortunately that is not the case. I just have a strong love for reading. If you were to name a book, there’s a 70% that I’ve read it, wanted to read it, have put it on my reading list, or have heard of it. I’d really love to have something more interesting to say about my personality, but all I do is sing karaoke, read, and watch Fifth Harmony videos. So onto the specifics we go!!

As humans, we naturally have the desire to be loved, whether by family, a close friend, a significant other, and etcetera. Either way, we hope to have these important people in our life so we may share our deepest desires and have someone to listen to us when we go through hardships. However, as humans, we also have the ability to feel lonely when we don’t have someone to lean on. Fortunately, the answer to these problems of loneliness and desolation is simple: it starts with prayer. Prayer is not just and rambling off of memorized words that have no meaning, but a lifting of our minds and hearts to God in praise and petition in a relationship of love (Singer-Towns 185). All people are called to prayer, whether through thanksgiving, petition, or adoration!

Destiny, it’s an odd concept to wrap your head around. Often its questioned if one creates it or is it already written. After meeting this young lady, her life merged with mine in a way that reassured this belief. Ten years ago, I met her for the first time as she chased down the school bus making it just in time to walk on with a head full of long black hair and a puffy gold jacket that reminded me of the 80’s. Pretending to look carelessly out the divided bus window, I would secretly wish she would come sit next to me. When we finally became friends it was dreamlike, I didn’t know how to react it was like we were raised on different timescales, she was a woman and I still in my awkward adolescent phase. As time went on we would talked, glanced at one another and both wanted one another, somehow it never worked out. Five years went by, school was behind us, but the thought of being with her still shadowed my mind. Finally, through the marvelous invention of social media, I found her and we connected. That connection broke me in positive and negative ways, but ended up inspiring personal growth through love and heartbreak.

Love what does it mean? For me it just means that you will find someone who will always make you feel happy when you're sad. They also will always be there for you no matter when it is or the time.
