The Susan G. Komen Foundation of Greater Atlanta’s goal is to reduce mortality of African American breast cancer by 25% in the next 5 years (Susan G. Komen Atlanta, 2017). In order to reach this goal, Komen has created many local outreach programs to educate the community about breast health and breast cancer screening (Susan G. Komen Greater Atlanta, 2017). Educational programs like these can have significant impacts on breast cancer mortality rates (Asuquo and Olajide, 2015). However, they may need to focus on certain racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic groups (Herndon, et al., 2013). Worship in Pink is one of Komen’s educational outreach programs that provides breast health and screening information to participating religious organizations (Susan G. Komen, 2017).
Breast Health
Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in American women (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2017). However, regular screening and mammograms can help reduce the mortality rates of breast cancer patients (LaPorta, et al., 2017). Signs and symptoms of breast cancer may include lumps, abnormal changes to the nipple, abnormal discharge from the nipple, or change in color of the breast or part of the breast (Asuquo and Olajide, 2015). There are many factors that can put women at risk of developing breast cancer, the two most common being growing older and being female (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2017). Other risk factors can include things such as a
A person similar me who has no prior family history of breast cancer would assume there is only one type unfortunately there are multiple types. Corresponding the article said “they may have different causes and definitely respond differently to treatments.” The two similar types are luminal A and B which engages with tumors, the third type is HER2-postive, which creates too much protein, and lastly basal-like “triple negative” is associated with being the greatest aggressive one of them all. Reading this article actually opened my eyes since normally you would assume that the cause of the cancer would be the reason of death but sadly “Breast cancer in your breast doesn’t kill you; the disease becomes deadly when it spreads to other organs or the bones.” With that in mind who began the 1913 organization today known as the American Cancer Society, which was all about spreading awareness and doing something about that unknown disease. It resulted in the people listening and actually going to their doctors to acquire mammograms moving further with operations to try to fix the issue. With multiple great results in 1985 pink was award “for the cure” and the color pink was placed on numerous types of objects to spread the message that “it symbolized both fear of the disease and hope it can be
Generally speaking, throughout the United States, Cancer is a public health concern that has a significant impact amongst both men and women. At the same time, Breast Cancer indicates development of a tumor from cells in the breast known as a malignant tumor. Breast Cancer can begin at two different points, either the cells of the lobules, that are milk-producing glands, or the ducts, a channel draining milk from the lobule to the nipple (“What is Breast Cancer,” 2016). Specifically speaking about Breast Cancer among women, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (2016), it is the most common cancer, regardless of ethnicity or race. Under those
Cancer is where abnormal cells divide uncontrollably and destroy tissue. With each special type of cell through differentiation each cancer is unique like Leukemia and breast cancer.
Cancer often goes undiagnosed because the symptoms of it are not obvious. However, breast cancer can be typically diagnosed in the early stages if a person is aware of the symptoms. Many women are able to beat breast cancer because it is often diagnosed while it is still in the early stages. There are more treatment options available for cancers that have not spread. Below is a list of some of the most common breast cancer symptoms:
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. In 2008, more than one million women underwent a diagnostic evaluation for suspected breast cancer. Approximately 182,500 women of the more than one million that received an evaluation also received a positive diagnosis (Montgomery, 2010). Risk factors linked to Breast Cancer include: gender, age, family history, prior breast cancer, previous biopsy, race and ethnicity, breast density, and long menstrual history because of prolonged hormonal stimulation. Modifiable related risk factors also include hormone replacement therapy, alcohol, weight, and physical
Cancer is started when the DNA in a cell becomes damaged. The mutated cells caused by the damaged DNA rapidly reproduce which can cause tumors to form. There are two types of tumors, benign tumors and malignant tumors. A benign tumor is non-invasive, and an malignant tumor is invasive. Breast cancer generally will form in the lobules or milk ducts. Lobular carcinoma in situ, also called LCIS, is non-invasive. That means the it forms and stays in the lobules. Lobular carcinoma is invasive. That means that it develops in the lobules and breaks through and has a potential to spread to other parts of the body. Ductal carcinoma in situ is non-invasive. It forms and stays in the milk ducts. Ductal carcinoma is invasive and is when ductal carcinoma
“Our mission is to achieve prevention and a cure for breast cancer in our lifetime by providing critical funding for innovative clinical and genetic research at leading medical centers worldwide, and increasing public awareness about good breast health.” This is a mission statement made from Evelyn H. Lauder. She is the founder of The Breast Cancer
Are you a woman over 40? If so, do you get regular mammograms? Breast cancer is an epidemic that plagues women, even though some men can get it. According to the American Cancer Society, “breast cancer is a malignant tumor that starts in the cells of the breast. A malignant tumor is a group of cancer cells that can grow into (invade) surrounding tissues or spread (metastasize) to distant areas of the body. The disease occurs almost entirely in women, but men can get it, too” (Breast Cancer). Today many women are becoming diagnosed with breast cancer. It has become the most type of cancer in women, regardless of ethnicity or background. There are many risk factors that can cause breast cancer. Factors such as family history, obesity,
These methods include: a breast exam, mammogram, breast ultrasound, biopsy, and MRI. On the website, mayoclinic.org, there was a brief explanation about each of these methods. For breast exams the doctor usually checks both breast and the lymph nodes in the armpits or other abnormalities. An x-ray is used for mammograms in order to screen cancer. Now for the breast ultrasound, they use sound waves to make images and can help distinguish between a solid mass or fluid filled cyst. A magnet and radio waves are used to create images of one’s breast, along with an injection of dye, for an MRI. A biopsy actually can help influence treatment options that one receives. It is a laboratory analysis that helps determine if the cell is very cancerous (mayoclinic.org). Treatments for breast cancer also vary person to person and depend on the stage that the person is in. They can have breast cancer surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy and targeted drugs. Surgery involves removing the cancer or it can be as much as removing both breasts. Radiation therapy uses high beams of energy, like x-rays, in order to kill the cancer cells and chemotherapy uses drugs in order to kill the cancer cells. Hormone therapy is often used to treat breast cancers that are sensitive to hormones and the targeted drugs are used to attack specific abnormalities
After I read a summary of the show, I felt sad because Joni suffered from chronic pain and stage three breast cancer. She must be so painful and she does not want to live her life with pain every day. First, she complained about God, but later she understood God. I was surprised because she tried to persuade herself that she has a sin. That is why she was not healed. It was a new information that about 75 % of people who left with physical disabled from an accident experienced divorce. However, her husband, Ken, did not give up his marriage life and fell in with her again.
This paper will explain to you an in depth description of an illness that has taken several lives: Breast Cancer. Not only will it inform you about what it is, but also how it is diagnosed, the process the disease goes through, what body systems are affected, signs and symptoms, how it is treated, and the prognosis. My information was located on the internet by using credible sources in order to create and accurate report over the illness. I used websites such as breastcancer.org and nationalbreastcancer.org for accurate results with credible sources. I selected this topic because I know of several women who have suffered from this disease. As a woman, I think it is important to be educated on this particular type of cancer since it is so common in women today. This paper will give an idea of how common it is and the risks every woman has of acquiring breast cancer.
Women have been educated on breast self-awareness by regularly checking their breast for any abnormalities especially feelings of a lump. Breast cancer is one of the most shared cancers that a women may face. It can transpire at any age, but it is much more likely to happen after 40 years old and as a women gets older. Because of definite factors, some women may have a greater chance of having breast cancer than others. As a women is getting older she should know about breast cancer and what she can do about it.
Understanding ways to prevent breast cancer are important for all women to know and discern. Every woman is at risk of developing breast cancer, however, the risk is not equal among all women. “Some breast cancer risk factors, such as gender and family history, are not changeable. Other risk factors, like age, become more important as a woman grows older. Some of the following lifestyle characteristics could reduce the chance of developing breast cancer. Characteristics include exercise at least one and a half hours a week, maintaining a healthy body weight, and taking Aspirin or Ibuprofen twice a week can lower your chances of developing breast cancer. Alcohol consumption more than doubles the risk of women obtaining breast cancer, and smoking shows increased rates of breast cancer”(Holmes par 1). Some women may not be genetically proven to develop breast cancer, but that doesn’t mean the individual will not get cancer
Image 2 shows about one in eight women will develop breast cancer in the US during their lifetime. Based on statistics, estimates were made about breast cancer in the year of 2016. Nearly 246,660 women will be diagnosed with invasive cancer (American Cancer Society, 2016). There have also been trends that have been noticed in the past. From 2002 to 2003, breast cancer rates began decreasing and dropped by about seven percent (American Cancer Society, 2016). Breast cancer takes many lives each year. It is the second leading cause of deaths in women next to lung cancer (American Cancer Society). Although the death rate percentage has been decreasing. The reasoning for the decrease is finding the cancer in its earlier stages and treating it as soon as possible (American Cancer Society, 2016). Breast cancer can also be affected by the race of a person. In women under 45, African American women are more likely to die of breast cancer than white women(American Cancer Society). Women who are Hispanic, Asian, and Native American are at low risks of developing breast cancer. Breast cancer has affected many lives of people in the US. Though, there are new developments being made to reduce the impact of breast
Breast cancer accounts for one third of all new cancer diagnoses in the United States (Cauley, et al., 2007). The first sign in the process of this disease is a lump that forms around the breasts. For this reason, it is necessary to get the yearly mammograms once a woman reaches a certain age. Also, monthly self-examinations can aid in finding breast cancer early. If this condition is found early enough, chances of survival are abundant. Most women who get breast cancer are older than 50 with 86% of the deaths occurring in this age group (Cauley, et al., 2007). Postmenopausal women have a higher risk for breast cancer, because the risk increases when levels of endogenous estradiol rise (Cauley, et al., 2007). Breast cancer is the most common cancer that occurs in women. This epidemic has a higher incidence rate among white women than in African American women, but African American women have a higher mortality rate (Breast Cancer Risk Factors, 2010). White women are more apt to develop this disease than any other ethnicity. However, in women under 45, breast cancer is more common in African American women (Breast Cancer Risk Factors, 2010).
