Pursuit of Happyness: Life Lessons You got a dream… You gotta protect it. People can’t do somethin’ themselves, they wanna tell you you can’t do it. If you want somethin’, go get it. Period. (Chris Garnder). Chris Garnder said this in the movie, “The Pursuit of Happyness,” written by a man with the name Steve Conrad. He bases the movie off of the life of Chris Garnder, and his struggles in life. Garnder’s life can teach others many life lessons. Garnder’s wife left him, which made him a single father. Even though he was left in a horrible situation with being a single father and being poor, he was determined to make the best of the situation and work his behind off for a better life for his son. The first life lesson one can learn from this movie would be that determination can get a person …show more content…
When Garnder was left with his son and he knew it would be hard to support him, instead of putting his son up for adoption (which would have been an easier route), he chose to stick it out and be an amazing father. He knew that he had nothing to offer his son material wise, but he did offer him love and knowledge. At one point in the movie, he showed anger toward his son when they were kicked out of their home. His son was crying because all of their belongings wereout of the house, Garnder yelled for him to be quiet. The viewers saw this being mad not because he had no home, but his son would be now homeless. He made the best out of a bad situation by going multiple places and trying to sell bone density scanners so that he could get money to support his son and get him out of the homeless shelter. Once he sold one, he and his son went to a hotel to stay. In this scene, it shows how close they are. They have a big hotel room with beds and a couch, and even with all of that stuff around them they still snuggled up on the couch together. This showed how strong their bond
His life was obviously not a walk in the park. His family, a single mother home with another sibling, was devastatingly poor, therefore just being one of the many challenges he had to conquer. Being
His anger toward his own son seems to be why he feels as he does. His son, who was beaten by his father when he was young, knocked his father down as a teenager. Then he ran away from home and has not seen his father since.
In my opinion I do believe Garp made the right decision to attend his mother’s memorial service, it was unfair that he could not attend because he was a male. That was his mother and he was her only
his fathers custody, and in the beginning of the story, he did not want to help his father
Lack of parental supervision leads to unremorseful actions. Grendel's mother presnets herself to not care about his overall well-being as she sees him night after night, conducting destructive
Unfortunately for this character, he was unable to shelter his family from any of these as his fear and paranoia either led to these or made the situation worse. The first situation revolved around his first born son who he admittedly was overprotective of; stating “he knew he was an overwatchful, worrisome father” and that he had “excess anxiety” when it came to him (Irving, p. 161). One day he had let this son, Duncan, go to a friend’s house for the night whose mother smoked and drank often. Garp became so
I struggled to empathize with Gamini. He encounters a struggle that I relate to but reacts in a way that is difficult to empathize with. Being the younger brother, Gamini feels neglect and abandoned by his parents that provide materially, but may not have pursued him enough mentally and emotionally. The author notes “the love she showed was a general affection, never specifically for him” and in another passage writes “though he didn’t mind. Thought it was true for all children. He and his brother had become content with aloneness, the lack of necessity for speaking” (217). Gamini knows that his parents did not provide the emotional reinforcement he required, but refuses to acknowledge it. Instead he allows his actions to speak the truth of his reality.
Our Rightful Place Everyone wants to achieve happiness. That’s a fact. How we achieve it, differs between each person. Some believe that by entering a top ranked college; and getting a high paying job they’ll become happy. Others think that they’ll achieve happiness through marriage.
"A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops." As Henry Adams stated, and is the summary of the impervious bond between the characters Mitch and Morrie, in Tuesdays with Morrie. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) often referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease is a form of motor neuron diseases. It is a rare disorder in which the nerves that control muscular activity degenerate within the brain and spinal cord. What results is weakness and wasting away of the muscles. The cause is unknown. About one to two cases of ALS are diagnosed annually per 100,000 people in the US. (Lou) Sufferers will notice weakness in the hands and arms accompanied by wasting of the muscles (Motor). The weakness
Throughout the novel, the characters go to varying extremes to survive. Some characters aim to survive while still keeping their morals intact while others abandon all human decency and do absolutely anything that is required for their survival. The father and the son are the characters who survive while not doing anything that they feel will diminish or jeopardize their goodness. Many times in the novel, the father and son come across supplies that seemingly do not belong to anyone anymore. However, each time of their fortuitous fortune, the boy always needs reassurance that whoever the supplies had belonged to will not need them again. Also, when the father and son come across a supply-deficient old man traveling on the road, the son begs his father to share some of their supplies with him. Because of their own dismal supplies and the ongoing uncertainty of acquiring new ones,
He work hard to become the sole bread winner for his family, even though the father was there, he still was the main person that everyone in his family depended on.

To me Garp does not have the stereotypical role as a father in this book. My main reason why I think he is more of the mother figure is because he was raised without a father, so he does not know what it means to be the father. He has motherly instincts and treats his children the way his mother treated him. He has a more over protecting vibe to him, they way he comes across certain situations, reminds me of how my mom acts. Like for example when Duncan, Garps son, said he wanted to go to his friends house Garp got crazy and said will his mother be at the house with you guys? Is she going to leave you guys home alone again? And then he told Duncan, ask your mother what she thinks about this. That is totally something that my mom would tell
