Learning Journal Survey: Social Psychology

The class I had chosen for my learning journal survey was Social Psychology, I was only enrolled in psychology classes this semester, while some questions in the survey did apply to my class, I did feel that my answers to some questions would have changed if it corresponded to another class. At the beginning of the class I found myself overwhelmed but the amount of classes I had enrolled myself in. As the course went on, I found myself understanding the lectures but when I had to study for an exam or a quiz I found it quite hard to keep myself focused and concentrated on what I had learning. Stress can understandably impair learning, motivation and your memory, which then all affect your overall achievement — whether your its your short term goal of passing the class or your long term goals of graduating. I can understand the feeling of having so many ideas and thoughts in your mind and not knowing how to seamlessly work through each one. While there are four main types of stress: cognitive, emotional, behavioral and physical each take a toll at you in different ways, there are things like academic issues, depression, time management, finances, and family issues that can definitely lead to stressful situations which would impair your learning. The fact is that your brain does not allow you to actually store information in your memory when you are experiencing stress. Even-though I have coped with some things, I have often still found myself pretty stressed in class. In social psychology it wasn’t so much that I was stressed about the class but rather other things going on in my life which was not allowing me to retain the material. I then would begin to think about everything I had due, my exams coming up, my social life, and work, which frankly took a toll on my mental health and would just elevate my stress. We learned some meditation techniques through an app and some breathing exercises to help de-stress ourselves. This is an important skill to attain in life, meditation allows you to sleep better, have less stress due to lower cortisol levels and reduces anxiety, allows for a better memory, more happiness, activates both the left and right hemispheres in your brain which leads to faster learning and more creativity. All of these great benefits that come from meditation allow for a better learning, motivation, memory and achievement. If meditation can reduce stress and anxiety it can allow for you to focus better in class and on the tasks assigned. Not only more sleep, but a deeper sleep can allow for you to be attentive and able to keep memories in long term, it would allow you to recall information previously learned a lot better. Not to mention since sleep can affect your mood and meditation brings on happiness it could create for higher motivations and a desire to achieve goals. Most people use one side of their brain more than the other, this creates an imbalance, by meditation you would then be allowed to create a balance and use both hemispheres. Both hemispheres are quite different too; the left would carry reasoning, logic, and be ruled by facts, whereas the right is creative, imaginative, and
