As the semester is coming to an end, I reflect upon the last several weeks of learning. Was my time in the classroom a productive learning experience? How can I use the last few weeks of internship to strengthen my teaching skills? Finally, how does positive academic notes effect the students as well as my perspective as a teacher? As I think about my time in the classroom, I can make positive changes in my life as well as in the life of my students when I am willing to change.
Lat week, I had a memorable learning experience that changed my perspective as a pre-service teacher. If I want to ensure my internship time in the classroom is a productive learning experience, I need to be willing to change. Last week, I was asked to work with

A leader does not sit around and allow someone else provide them with an opportunity to succeed. Therefore, I will continue to become knowledge about the current standards being taught in the classroom, even if they are not all stated. Additionally, I will continue to look for opportunities to help students who are struggling with classroom tasks even if I struggle through the process myself. Last week, when working with a student on a subtraction problem I used the wrong terminology. The student needed someone to walk her through the problem step by step and one step was regrouping. However, I said borrow. My cooperating teacher made sure I was aware of the mistake. When I was a girl in school we learned the term borrow, but today the term regrouping is used and I understand why. Using the correct terminology is important, and I hope to never make that mistake again. But, I do not want to step back because I might not always say the right thing. An effective teacher learns by trying new strategies as well as willing to fail at times. The next few weeks, I will step out of my comfort zone try new teaching techniques with the students. Furthermore, I will be ready to failure and except it as a part of growing as a pre-service teacher.
Finally, I have started my four weeks of the positive’s. Currently, I am looking for opportunities to compliment students for their positive academic achievements in Mrs.
Reflection 1 Learning about family policy while doing service learning can provide those participating in service learning with demographics and background information on families and communities. The importance of those doing the service learning and the community collaborating is to get an idea of what is going on in their community that results in using the services provided by family policies. Learning about family policies can help me to understand what services can be provided to families. It can also help me understand what requirements are needed to qualify for certain services. It can be beneficial doing service learning because it can provide me with the opportunity to gain real world understanding and connections.
For my service learning hours, I decided to assistant coach at Four Corners Charter Upper School. When I took on this task, being tremendously excited to work with the girls there and give back to this school. My role consisted of being the assistant coach to my sister Amanda Ramirez, helping her to guide and train the girls to learn the sport of lacrosse. Having experience in coaching high school girl’s lacrosse, I came in with drills and strategies to be the most effective assistant coach. The girls that decided to come out for the team haven’t ever heard of the sport, which became a good thing for coaching, giving us the upper hand for coaching and teaching the sport to the girls.
For my Community Service Learning placement, I am volunteering for PAAL, which is a program for children and youth with physical and intellectual impairments. Their vision is to offer individuals who otherwise may not get the chance, an opportunity to participate in a wide variety of physical activities.
The facility I chose to volunteer at to complete my service learning was the CMPD Animal Care and Control. The CMPD Animal Care and Control was a good place to do my service learning because it related to my topic perfectly. The CMPD Animal Care and Control because they take a variety of breeds. They are also very informative about breed discrimination. The organization is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, but they work with animals. The organization provides safety to citizen and animals in the community. They promote proper pet ownership and loving homes for adoptable pets. Another goal is to decrease the overpopulation with spay and neuter clinics.
From this experience I can say that I did also acquire new skills on how to better manage my time when I am working with time consuming work. My multi-tasking skills have improved and I was also able to learn how to organize tasks in such a way so that it is completed in an efficient manner that represents quality work. I also realized that I am quick to adapt to changes in the work environment and I pick up really quickly on new tasks that I am taught to complete. From my whole internship what I value the most is two things. The new skills I was able to better and the relationship that resulted between the managers I worked for. Working with Beverly was very beneficial, she is very helpful in helping you with anything you do not understand. By getting the chance to work with Beverly I was able to network out which is very helpful. I would also recommend this experience to others because it is helpful and will give you an idea of what you want to pursue. From this experience I have come to the conclusion on what interests me even more in the healthcare field and what I would like to
Going into the Teach Live session I was very excited and could not wait to experience what it would be like to teach a real lesson. At first when hearing about the assignment I thought to myself this was going to be hard for me to do. This is so because I am a very shy and closed off person, my voice gets shaky when I have to speak in front of a group, and I have never done anything such as a Teach Life lesson before. The day of the Teach Live I was jittery and elated that whole day, I just knew I was going to kill it. I arrived 15 minutes early and Mr. C made sure I felt very comfortable and was ready. While sitting there preparing to teach the lesson I had chosen, fear and nervousness swept over me and I began to worry. A few minutes before I began the Teach Live session all the fear and negativity left my mind and body. Then when the session began and I saw the virtual students a smile grew on my face, sending a cooling, calm sensation through my body.
For the week of March 7th- March 11th I did my internship at Cape Fear Middle School under the guidance of Coach Bell, Coach Reese and Mrs. Hayes the data manager. The first day of my internship, I helped coach Bell with his computer class assisting any student who needed help. I met a fellow intern Ms. Jessica Fallon who is a student at UNCW, and we both helped coach the A/B gym classes for 6th, 7th and 8th grade. I played the role of the DJ during the warm ups and referee when the groups played capture the flag. Ms.Fallon was the instructor for the exercise part of the classes so I couldn’t help much in that department. Thursday and Friday I was the messenger/ secretary for the majority of the day. That was better than sitting down on a
I really enjoyed my service learning site because I got to work with kids from different backgrounds and help them with pronunciation and reading. I most significant accomplishment for me was be able to help kids who are struggling with English as a second language. I was pleased to see one of the students that I worked with actually came out of his shell and talked to other kids in the class. When I worked with him, he did not clearly pronounce the words, and his responds to me question were just nodding his head or performing some kind of gestures. For me last few weeks there, I was happy to see him being comfortable to speak out and interacting with other students. The most important thing I learned from my experience is that being patience
For this exercise, I assessed an experience that occurred almost twenty years ago. I do not believe that this assessment was beneficial in reframing my narrative of the experience. Until I completed the readings, I speculated that this may be in part due to the time that has elapsed since that incident. However, research indicates that there is no relationship between age of participants or time since the event (Tedeschi and Calhoun, 1996). With that said, I still don’t believe the assessment was beneficial in reframing my experience. I did find the assessment questions a reminder of how far I have come since the incident. Shortly, after the incident I saw the positive the emerged. This assessment could be a valuable tool to help others find
Reflection is thought by linking recent experience with early experience to promote more complex and interrelated mental models or patterns. The thinking involves looking for commonalities, differences, and interrelations beyond their superficial elements. The goal is to develop higher order thinking skills.
There have been times in my life in which I have sat back and watched things happen. I often wondered why they happened. I now realize that it is important to be a leader. Effective teachers need to take charge and make things happen. I am becoming a teacher to make things happen and not sit back and let them happen as I used to do. This is very important for a teacher to realize. I will take charge and make wonderful things happen in my classroom.
According to Kathleen Flecky and Lynn Gitlow, service-learning is defined as, “learning that occurs in experiences, reflection, and civic engagement” (Flecky & Gitlow, 2011). In recent years more universities are implementing service learning into their curriculum. A key concept of service learning is civic responsibility. Civic responsibility can simply be defined as your responsibilities as a citizen. As will be shown later in this paper, service learning can have many benefits not only to a student, but also to the community members
" reflection in a mirror is an exact replica of what is in front of it. Reflection in professional practice gives back not what it is, but what might be, an improvement on the original " Biggs (1999).
In today’s competitive world, people are expected to be highly effective and efficient. They need specific skills and knowledge for their education or work purposes. This has enforced various skill enhancement programs proposed by fraternity all over the world.
I believe that true learning requires much more than simply listening to a lecture, reading from a book, or watching a video. While these all may be involved in the process of learning, hands-on experience and a real desire for knowledge of the subject are needed to truly learn.
