Kazuo Ishiguro Genre Analysis

I approached my genre writing based on Writing in the Health Sciences guidelines for research papers. Since my chosen paper was a research paper, I looked for the sections in a research paper that included the abstract, introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, and references. This helped me decide what needed to be in each section so I could elaborate on if it was included or was not.

If only one genre was used the reader would not have any other sources or opinions to determine what the truth is or where the truth lies.

For example in The Noble Experiment it shows the genre of Autobiography. One of the main reasons why it’s an Autobiography is because of how the story addresses Jackie Robinson. According to the text it states “I sat and watched him, not knowing what to until he began tearing at one hand and with the other - just as if he were scratching his skin off his hand with his fingernails. I was alarmed. I asked him what he was trying to do to himself.” Throughout the text it has key words that signify the P.O.V of the text is first person this manifests that this is an Autobiography because in Autobiographies is shows the inner feelings of the subject and it uses first person words to really materialize that. In literature, there are genres. Two main genres are fiction and nonfiction. Fiction is a work of art that is not real or based on the facts. “‘Fiction’ refers to literature created from the imagination” (“What is the difference…?”). It can explain a story in a different point of view, maybe in a way that is out of the norm. Fiction is basically just nonfiction in an exaggerated way. Though fiction may not be based on the facts, it can still resemblance a sense of real life events. “Fiction may base on stories on actual historical events. Although fictitious characters are presented in a fictitious setting in stories and novels, yet they may have some resemblance with real life events and characters” (“Fiction”). When I first learned that the second unit would be about writing in different genres I was totally confused. What did this mean? Would I be doing different writings of mystery, romance or science fiction? That was my only small narrow view of what a genre is. I have now come to learn that a genre is not only simply whether something is fiction or nonfiction but a genre is different types of writing from a recipe to a resume. I have come to learn that there are so many different types of genres all unique in their own respect and all written from a different perspective.

Have you ever wondered why you were forced to take an English course in college, where you had to learn about genre and different forms of writing? Ever also wondered, when am I going to ever use this in everyday life? Well, I am here to tell you there is an explanation to both of those questions and it should make one think about what they are learning on a whole different level. Starting with genre, you should know that pretty much everything has a genre within.

The world of writing is a vast and thoroughly confusing place, so vast in fact that it could not be navigated without an in-depth navigational chart. This chart is composed of and organized by terms that help us get a clearer picture of what we want to see. These terms are genre, audience, and most importantly rhetorical situation. These terms are all interrelated in which you can’t fully explore without having each one identified. One of the motives why writers delve into themselves, to put pen to paper so to speak is to express their views on a topic.

Genre is the French word for 'type'. Type is the kind of text it is.

1. The genre of "How Jack Went to Seek His Fortune" can be classified as a fairytale. This is because of the author's usage of the words "Once upon a time.." and the way the characters are incorporated into the story as Jack seeks his fortune. This story could also qualify as fiction because this excerpt from "How Jack Went to Seek His Fortune" is non-realistic due to its fairytale qualities.

Genres are dependent on various factors such as story line, whom the director is, and what are the audience expectations In using genre theory we create a short cut in how we describe films. Genres are categorized into and then sub categorized depending on the story and plot. Characteristics of the genre adventure, consist of a heroic protagonist, a journey or quest, unusual locations, and action and danger. Characteristics of the genre realistic fiction consist of events that could happen in real life, and the themes represent human experiences.

Genre is known to change discourse by the format the information is presented to the audience (Varela, 2008). It is also a category of composition that is characterized by a particular style, form or content as dictate by Webster Third Dictionary. However Trosborg (n.d) stated that for the past decade, genre identification, classification and description have been scholarly concern. Certain scholars dictate that genre is defined primarily around its basic external criteria such as journals and newspaper discourse while other scholars stand on the opinion that genre can be classify by its communicative purpose, linguistic content and form of role its play in the discourse made (Trosborg, n.d).

The word “genre” is defined as a category of artistic composition, whether that art be painting, music, or literature. Genres are always defined by an origin point, the first and most essential example of its kind. In the case of literature, these are known as classical books. Novels and stories that are responsible for developing or popularizing a certain style, or theme. An easy example of a classical book responsible for creating genres could be The Hobbit. A fantasy novel written by J.R.R. Tolkien to entertain his children and keep track of the bedtime stories he continuously told them. Tolkien’s wonderous stories bore a new era of creation, seeing the continuation of the story in Lord of the Rings, and becoming the basis for modern fantasy

Question: What is the function of genre? Would you classify the ‘Purloined Letter’ a detective fiction or mystery?

Characteristics of the genre the work does/doesn’t meet: The book is not true so is considered fiction, also Carrie falls in love with the Charles so it is romance.
