1. The Summary of the four assigned readings are as follows: • Kathry Caprino’s article discusses eight self-limiting behaviors successful people avoid. The article serves as a guide for avoiding certain behaviors that impede upon personal success. The first self-limiting behavior mentioned is “below the line thinking.” This negative behavior creates a line of thinking where you believe everything is out of your control. Instead we should be accountable and take action in order overcome any challenge. The second behavior is “Mistaking fantastical wishful thinking for action.” This is when unsuccessful individuals fantasize of success in order to relief themselves from their current situation. The fourth behavior “Putting off investing in themselves.” These individuals do not invest in themselves because they feel they are not worth it. Instead, successful individuals understand they are worth it and actively invest in themselves. The forth behavior is “Resisting change” these individuals are stuck in the past and complain about how things are not how they use to be. Instead, successful individuals welcome change and go along with the flow. The sixth behavior is “Honoring other people’s priorities over their own.” Successful people don’t aimlessly wander through life without a purpose. Instead, they have a clear goal and do not stray from their goal due to priorities of others. The seventh avoided behavior is “Doubting themselves and their instincts.” These successful individuals do not doubt their abilities. Instead, they believe in themselves and acknowledge their mistakes and weak areas. The eighth and final behavior successful individuals avoid is “Searching for handouts and easy answers.” These successful individuals do not expect something for nothing. Perlis ‘s article discusses five characteristics of Grit. The article begins by discussing how today’s parents have protected their children from failure, causing our current generation to be soft. She further explains that successful individuals possess the 5 characteristics of grit. The first characteristic is, Courage. She explains that courage is a muscle that must be grown and acts a sort of fuel for grit. The second characteristic is, conscientiousness. Margaret says these in individuals are achievement oriented and very meticulous. In other words, they go for the go for the gusto and are very detail oriented, instead of just being a participant. The third characteristic Margret describes is, follow through. That is, successful individuals have endurance to meet long-term goals. The forth characteristic is resilience. She explains that endurance is a characteristic of grit because with long term goals successful individuals are bound to fail now and then. These individuals must be able to stand up after they fall. That is, be able to preserver and learn from their mistakes. The fifth and final characteristic that describes grit is excellence. She explains excellence as an attitude not an end result.
