The history of Judaism starts in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament). What the Jews believe is that God himself chose them to be an example to the rest of the people in this world and how the relationship between God and the men he chose work on their relationship. This relationship between the Jews and God was a bit stormy in the beginning. One glamorous event that happened in the Jewish history is the way God changes and developed in company with the specific men he picked.

Jesus is the fulfillment of Judaic prophecies; he is the new Moses imparting the new Law of Love.

After I finished learning in Yeshiva, I was completely burnt out from Judaic studies. I just wanted to completely immerse myself in secular studies. After all, I was trying to catch up after not learning English or math for five years. However, recently I realized how important it is to learn something in Judaism every day to maintain a strong connection with God. As a result, I started incorporating some Jewish learning into my daily schedule.

The age of the second temple was a crucial time period as it was during this time that second temple was rebuilt. The Torah started to gain some recognition among the Jewish people as well. The Torah, which is the first five books of the Bible or also called the Pentateuch, was recognized as scripture. These first five books comprised of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. Essentially the Torah was what consisted of the rules that Moses was given by God. Unfortunately, during this era is when the Jews decided to rebel against the Romans causing Jerusalem to fall and the second temple was destroyed in 70 C.E.; however, the destruction of the temple was replaced with synagogues, which is a building for Jews to meet for worship.

Jews themselves have long believed that their history begins with the Patriarchs of Genesis and the Exodus from Egypt in the age described by the bible. However, it is important to note that the people described in much of the bible do not call themselves Jews they call themselves Israelites of the sons of Israel. The culture and religion of the early Jews and that of the later Jews differs in many ways. “The terms Jew derives from the name “Judah” but even in the Hebrew bible that term has several possible meanings, referring to an Israelite tribe, to a territory in the Southern part of Canaan, and also to the kingdom based in this territory and ruled by David and his descendants” (Efron et al. Pg. 1). After the end of the biblical period the term Jewish acquired many different connotations signifying a particular way of life. Jewish signifies a religion for some, for others a cultural or ethnic identity that is not necessarily religious and for others a national identity.

The Jews of Israel and the world celebrated with joy and gladness, because for over two thousand years, they had hoped to return to the land of their heritage. (Silverman, 1) However with Jews from all around the world returning to Israel, the Arabs residing in this land were forced into exile. The rebirth of Israel marked the beginning of conflict, violence, and peace treaties between the Arabs and the Jews of the Middle East.

In order for the humans in early history to create a successful civilization, they needed a few main key components. First, these people needed a good food source so they can sustain a growing population in their community. Next, they needed a strong army to survive wars between other civilizations and each other. Finally, they needed a powerful leader to create laws for the civilians. The Hebrews, a civilization in Canaan, did not have all of these key factors. Although, they were still famous for their religion, Judaism. Judaism was unique compared to other religions in the region because it focused on morality, gave the freedom to choose, and it was monotheistic.
