The Enlightenment was a time period, mid-1700s, where people began to think independently. In my opinion John Locke, Montesquieu, and Mary Wollstonecraft are the most important because we, the United States government, would not be as strong as it is today.
John Locke is the first philosopher to inspire the U.S government. John Locke believed that people were naturally good. Also, he believed in Natural Rights, Life, Liberty, and Property. Locke said that if natural rights are not given from the government then we the people have a right to fight for them. One big reason John Locke is a great philosopher is because he inspired Thomas Jefferson to write the Declaration of Independence. As you can see, John Locke is a very important philosopher.
The Enlightenment was a philosophical movement that took place in mainly Europe, and mainly in North America during the late 17th century and early 18th century. In my opinion, Benjamin Franklin, Baron de Montesquieu, and John Locke were the most important philosophers.
mine. He believes that war should not be used unless it’s the last possible option we
John Locke was perhaps one of the most influential political philosophers of the modern period. In the Second Treatise of Government, John Locke discusses the move from a state of nature and perfect freedom to a then governed society in which authority is given to a legislative and executive power. His major ideas included liberalism and capitalism, state of nature, state of war and the desire to protect one’s property.
John Locke and Baron de Montesquieu both helped to build our constitution and we borrowed some of their ideas for how we live our lives in America. John Locke had the idea that people were born with the three natural rights: life, liberty, and property. We as an early country
There were many people that helped contribute to the Enlightenment, but the most prominent American leader was a well-know political figure named Benjamin Franklin. The Enlightenment, also called the Age of Reason, was period of time when people tried to justify life in terms of scientific theory and rationalism. “The Enlightenment was responsible for inspiring revived interests in education, science, and literature” (“HistoryKing.com”). It also emphasized progression away from traditional customs and foundations
The Enlightenment was a period of learning and expanding. It was a shift in society and how people thought. John Locke and his ideas contributed in a major way towards the Enlightenment. Locke had three main philosophies, religious tolerance, all men are born a blank slate, and that the divine right to rule is incorrect. His influence on society helped shape the transition of religion to reason & questioning. Locke left a very powerful and positive impact on England during the seventeenth century.
The enlightenment era arose in the modern cultural ideology of the 18th century, as ideas among philosophers had a widespread effect among the society. The age of enlightenment, in western society, projected the rejection of traditional Christianity, western philosophy, intellectual advances, scientific, and cultural life, government legitimacy and authority. Upon the enlightenment period multiple philosophers emerged, the individuals arose to leading figures using reason to understand all aspects of human life. The motivations for the enlightenment came primarily from the Englishmen, John Locke. John Locke was a philosophical influence in both political theory and theoretical philosophy, which was embraced among the era of 1789-1914 and
John Locke believed that everyone had a series of God-given rights—a natural moral law, and people gave rights to the government when it came to how they should be ruled. Locke is responsible for some of the most influential writings on liberty. His writings helped influence Thomas Paine’s ideas about revolution. James Madison, one of the writers of the bill of rights, was influenced greatly by Locke, and the French philosopher Voltaire called him “the man of great wisdom.”
The political philosopher, John Locke is known best for his ideas that influenced Thomas Jefferson while writing the Declaration of Independence. Locke’s views on government were very respected by our founding fathers, even though they were very different from the government styles of his time.
Could you imagine a world with no freedom, choice of religion, and equality? I’m guessing your answer would be no. Thanks to the 17th to 18th century philosophers, they introduced these ideas to the world to make it an overall better place. There were four enlightenment philosophers and their names were John Locke, Voltaire, Adam Smith, and Mary Wollstonecraft. The philosophers all had different goals but had the same perspective and that was to make the world a better place.
John Locke also wrote that if the government, “shall transgress this fundamental rule of society, and either by ambition, fear, folly, or corruption” that the citizens would have the right to overthrow that government. This idea deeply influenced Thomas Jefferson as he drafted the Declaration of Independence. Throughout history John Locke’s philosophies were very influential and his political opinions helped draft much of the U.S
The Enlightenment was a very eye-opening period of time because people learned for themselves, explored for themselves, and thought outside of the norm. There were many philosophers known well today for their thinking during the Enlightenment era. The first philosopher was John Locke. He is very known for his beliefs in the government and natural rights.
The one enlightenment figure that I think made an impact in the world would be 'Denis Diderot'. He debated the enlightenment through his writing and later published the Encyclopedia. His purpose was to change the way of thinking.
The ideas from the Enlightenment and its thinkers greatly influenced the world today, everything from our ideas of modern government to our view of everyday life. Important Enlightenment philosophes such as Locke, Montesquieu, Hobbes and Voltaire established controversial ideas and theories on human nature, natural rights, and how government should be run and which form of it was superior. These ideas were all never even thought of before, and shattered many of the previous notions of ideas, such as ideas of how to run government, that had already been established and taken as a standard for several hundreds of years.
There were many philosophers who made an impact during the Age of Enlightenment. David Hume was an important man along with John Locke and Bishop George Berkeley. “Hume is our Politics, Hume is our Trade, Hume is our Philosophy, Hume is our Religion.” (Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy). This quote by James Hutchison Stirling, a nineteenth century philosopher, shows his unique position in the world at the time.
