“Wisdom” in Job, Ecclesiastes, and Proverbs Wisdom is a concept that most people are interested in. As human beings, we want to learn how to receive wisdom, know how it affects us, and what wisdom really is. Many people throughout the years have pondered these questions and have come up with a variety of answers. However, answers to these questions can also be seen in the Bible through books that are defined as wisdom literature, or literature that gives thought to “universal, humanistic, and philosophical standpoints” (Dell 1). We can especially see these questions answered in unique ways through Job, Ecclesiastes, and Proverbs. Job as a whole address the why’s of life, but when taking a look at a specific chapter of Job it can be seen
Wisdom essentially provides help to show us that we depend on God and are to live our lives like Christ. This in depth exploration on the love that God has for us will help us to gain a fuller understanding of what the Bible truly shows in this area. Packer states that in us trying to get a hold of the wisdom, we accidentally overlook the love and grace of God.(149) This is to paint a picture so that we can see the true glory/greatness of
[N]one of the gods loves wisdom or wants to become wise – for they are wise – and no one else who is wise already loves wisdom; on the other hand, no one who is ignorant will love wisdom either or want to become wise. For
Thus, the idea of Word in verses 1 through 3 of Gospel does in reframes the notion of Wisdom from Proverbs 8 in Verses 1 through 2 and 22 through 30.
A small amount of these books are Wisdom Literature including Job, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Syrach, and the Book of Wisdom. Every one of these books confronts the topic differently. Just like how Job ponders the mystery of why the good suffer. Also, the Proverbs obey short axioms as norms for moral Conduct. In the Ecclesiastes Qoheleth mourns the vanity of everything that isn't God therefore only God lasts and everything else is short-lived. Sirach gains the wisdom of past centuries and summarized it. The Book of Wisdom is most passionate towards its hopes for immortality. The first of the Songs of Songs and the Psalms was an epic love poem, celebrating ideal love between woman and man, which is also considered to be describing the love between God and the Israelites.
The book of Proverbs is the Hebrew book of Wisdom. Its purpose is to provide
Wisdom is the understanding of the concealed truths of the world and is the knowledge surrounding the human condition. It is when these truths and knowledge of humanity are organized in text, when the genre of wisdom and content combine, that Wisdom literature is formed. The aim of Wisdom literature is to search for propriety, the order of things in time and place (Narendorf). The Book of Job is an example of this aim as Job reveals alternative insight into the consequences of human behavior. Likewise, Aias and Odysseus, in Sophocles’ Aias, also offer a contradiction of conventional wisdom in regards to human relationships.
Zeus, despite having years of wisdom from his many years of life, changes his mind on whether the gods can interfere with the war. This example proves that even if one is old one can still change one’s mind. Second, wisdom, by the world’s standpoint, is not based off of age, but off of cognition among other qualities. Vivian Clayton, a neuropsychologist, did a study in the 1970’s on wisdom. After asking retired judges and law students and professors, who would have all been considered wise, she concluded that wisdom is based off of the cognition, compassion, and reflection of a person.
The genre of this book is wisdom. Written mostly by King Solomon, the book of Proverbs is filled with short statements of wisdom and ethics. The key themes are the fear of the Lord, understanding, and seeking wisdom. Proverbs advises against prostitution and countersigning notes. It councils people to save for the future, work hard, trust in the Lord, be patient, and accept criticism. There are no major events in this book. It is filled with expressions and phrases to guide people in their everyday lives. Proverbs teaches us that the “fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom”. It teaches the young to follow the teachings of their parents and to always look to the Lord for all things and he will “make your paths straight”. Overall, Proverbs contains practical instructions for our lives in the ways of the Lord, and warns us of the pitfalls of straying from theses basic truths.
Wisdom means being smart and knowing how to get through every single situation. Wisdom is a trait that everyone needs to excel at in life, because life can be unpredictable at times. We need to know how to handle it. Christian wisdom is the most important kind because we get our wisdom when we look to God. The Bible is a place where we should all go to get our wisdom, for it holds plenty of lessons and rules to follow. We all have the potential to be wise in everything we do, for we just need the right guidance to find that wisdom.
Even though wisdom is difficult to define, most people have general idea of what wisdom entails (Hooyman, N.R. & Kiyak, H. A.,2011). Morrie Schwartz was a wise individual. Throughout his conversations with Mitch Albom, he never actually tells him things directly instead guides him with his talks of past experiences to generate responses from him. He does the same with others never tells anyone what to do, rather makes comments to guide others to make the right choices. Mitch’s memories of Morrie’s teachings revolved around “being human and relating to others” (Abom, 1997, p. 17). Overall, Morrie demonstrated both factual and procedural knowledge as well as life-span contextualism and value relativism, which, put together define wisdom.
To recap, Proverbs illustrate Wisdom as both teacher and as a personified woman, whereas in John, Wisdom is incarnate
One area in the bible which I have a problem understanding is the story in
The Bible is full of wisdom and folly. This essay will evaluate the concepts of diligent people in Hebrew wisdom being wise, while the lazy person is a fool. The major part of the essay will concentrate in Proverbs, but we will review some scriptures from Ecclesiastes. Proverbs was written by Solomon, and he wrote it out of concern for his children. Ecclesiastes is said to have been written by Solomon, but this is not certain. Both books can be used by all for guidance, regardless of their age. Proverbs in general concentrates on moral virtues, and the opposite, their vices. The main theme of the book is the fear of the Lord, as it is seen fourteen times in Proverbs. Ecclesiastes main theme is life without God is empty, pointlessness and without meaning. There are a lot of contrasting chapters and verses comparing the differences between being wise and foolish, the wicked and righteous and the lazy and hardworking. Both books mainly concentrate on the contrasts between evil and good and foolishness and wisdom. So, let’s look at some verses and relate the concepts, describe and compare them to being diligent (wise) or laziness (foolish).
Wisdom Tradition is a term applied to the Old Testament books of Proverbs, Job, Sirach, Wisdom of Solomon, and Ecclesiastes. Wisdom Tradition books all share characteristics and points of view that are somewhat different than other biblical books. Wisdom tradition has very prominent characteristics from other books in the Old Testament such as a search for the goal of life, how to master it and questioning the problems of life, showing interest to human experiences that affect all people, joy of creativity and creation, and very little interest in the great acts of divine salvation. These qualities appear in a few books in the Old Testament. All of them show wisdom, but only some show both wisdom and tradition. Books such as Proverbs, Job, Ecclesiastes values the beauty of creation and the confidence of human life and nature. This was a new concept to Israel. They learned about wisdom tradition through other nations. They were influenced from Mesopotamian literature and took their ideas of meditations of sufferings and God’s justice into their Old Testament Books. Suffering can be seen in Job, but in the next essay and upcoming classes, we will be relating this to women suffering. The wisdom perspectives did not replace the other two major strands of thought in Ancient Israel, that of prophets and priests. It was simply a different focus that was complementary with the other perspectives presented in the Bible.
Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. James 3:13-15
