William Shakespeare’s play Othello is based on the theme of jealousy. Jealousy is an emotion that consists of feelings of anger, resentment, and insecurities due to the fear of losing something or someone that is considered of great value (). In Othello he introduces three couples which all play a major role in the theme of jealousy and how it develops throughout the play. The three couples are Othello and Desdemona, Iago and Emilia, and Cassio and Bianca. Each couple allows jealousy to ruin their relationship but some only to a certain extent. The main couple of the play is Othello and Desdemona. Their relationship is contrary to that of Iago and Emilia because their relationship was very strong and passionate. In the first act Iago states “I hate the moor, and it is thought abroad, that ‘twixt my sheets, has done my office. I know not if’t be the truth, but I for mere suspicion in that kind, will do as if for surety.” Iago has heard that Emilia is having an affair with Othello but doesn’t believe the rumor, but he still acts on it because of his hatred towards Othello for giving Cassio a higher position than himself. Iago was very jealous of Cassio because of the lieutenant position that Cassio was given from Othello. Iago’s jealousy drove him to extreme measures, all of which he kept hidden from Emilia. Iago masterminds a plan to undermine Cassio and gain his position as the lieutenant by pressuring Cassio to drink and then frames him for a stabbing that occurs during a brawl. When Othello finds out about Cassio’s supposed actions, he takes away his position as the lieutenant just like Iago planned. Iago continues to be both dishonest and disloyal by then persuading Othello, Cassio and Desdemona are having an affair. With his plan in motion, Iago then manipulates Emilia into committing her one disloyal act of the entire play. Iago asks Emilia to steal the handkerchief that Othello has given to Desdemona as her first gift and bring it to him.
