Island Song Analysis

The song of songs it is a well-known but not so well understood book of the Bible, it’s 8 chapters of love poetry and while there are an introduction and a conclusion, the book doesn’t have any kind of rigid literary design and that’s because it is a collection of poems. They are not meant to be dissected or taken apart. They are meant to be read as a flowing whole and simply enjoyed. The first line of the book tells us that it is “the song of songs” which is a Hebrew idiom like, “the holy of holies” or “the king of kings” it is a Hebrew way of saying, “the greatest thing,” this is the greatest song of all songs. We are told in the first line that this “song of songs” is of Solomon, which could mean that he is the author, his name does begin the book after all. But as I read the poems, I discover that the main voice of a woman, called “the beloved.” And while there is also a male voice, it does not seem to be Solomon. Solomon is mentioned a couple times in the poem, but he’s never a speaker, and you do have to admit Solomon is a very strange candidate as the author of this book, given the facts that he seven hundred wines. The “of Solomon” likely means “in the wisdom tradition of Solomon,” he was known for his wisdom, his poetry, his love of learning about every part of life. Also, Solomon became the father of wisdom literature in Israel, his legacy is here carried on, through a collection of love poems that explore the human experience of love and sexual desire. Lyubomirsky supports her claims with her interviews with happy people and scientific studies. Her purpose is to consider steps that people can take in order to become happier. She establishes an informal relationship with her audience of unhappy people.

Martha and the Vandellas was a female vocal group and one of the first groups signed by Motown Records. Big in the 1960’s and 1970’s, they were probably best known for their song “Dancing in the Street” which has been covered by numerous artists since. Though one of their less popular songs, “I Should Be Proud”, stands out to this day as an anti-war song which voiced a disagreement with the war- particularly regarding civil rights issues at the time.

This song depicts how the boys felt when they first arrived at the island. They saw that there were no adults and were excited about all the fun they were planning to have together and without parental supervision. The song paints an island in a positive light saying that it's a paradise, just like the boy’s original fantasies.

In the song “Happy” by Pharrell Williams, the message in the song is to always be happy, and that the sky is the limit. When I was younger I always had big goals and I still believe it, and I keep reminding myself of the message in the song when I’m upset or angry. The song "The message" by Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five depicts the struggle of young black adults growing up in society. The struggle to make it out of poverty can be compared to survival of the fittest in a jungle. Only the strong would survive and adapt to the changes to fit in. Trying their best to make a betterment with whatever little society offers. Being a young black African American in the early 1980's was not easy. It was easier to live the fast life and gain fast money by being part of the drug community. Drugs, guns, and money was glamorized and this is what the young adults looked at as a means of getting rich. The song I’m choosing for this essay the speaks to me is “Happy by Pharrell Williams”. The reason I choose this song is because just like the name of the song it makes me feel happy. The way the lyrics are put together and the beat of the music are so perfect, and makes me feel good inside.

his book The World in Six Songs, Dr. Daniel J. Levitin explores how the influence of musical sounds on the brain has created and shaped human nature. He believes that the various functions of music have affected the evolution of human relations. These musical functions are performed by six types of songs: friendship, joy, comfort, knowledge, religion and love. He feels that anthropologists, archaeologists and psychologists have neglected to thoroughly investigate how music has contributed to the development of human nature. Levitin is a research scientist, a psychologist, an author, a professional musician and record producer, and also professor at McGill University where he heads the Laboratory for Music Cognition, Perception and Expertise. He has been published in both scientific and musical trade journals.

The world seems to be a dark and unforgiving place, but happiness is hidden within. It is found in a beautiful view, an uplifting song, or a compliment from a friend. According to the Ted Talk video, The Habits of Happiness, Matthieu Ricard claims that everyone “has a deep, profound desire for well-being or happiness”(Ricard 2:39). Ricard uses the three techniques of Ethos, Pathos, and Logos to captivate and move his audience. With the use of metaphors, personal experiences, and even graphs Matthieu explained to his audience the full force and perception of the bendable word that is happiness. This Ted Talk dove into philosophical meaning on just how to achieve well-being, without having everything in the world.

As the power of a song resides completely in its lyrics, it is no longer surprising that music can be healing, inspiring, or even motivating. After introducing this insight to my life, it became very rare for me to listen to any Imagine Dragons’ song without it leaving an impact on my life and my perspectives. Imagine Dragons is a rock band whose music tends to address both personal and social issues. For example, to feel that adrenaline rush we select a more upbeat tone in music. If you want a relaxed mood, you listen to something nice and calm with a relaxing melody.
