As of 2012, there were over 1.6 billion muslims around the world. The religion started from a prophet named Muhammad. An angel came to him and squeezed him so hard that words came out of his mouth saying, “Allah the one God.” Allah is the one God that Muslims believe in. The religion called Islam spread around the middle east quickly. It started in Mecca in 610 and took 120 years to completely spread. “Why did Islam spread so quickly?” Islam is a religion greatly influenced by trade, war, and rules.

Islam is a monotheistic religious teaching about God and his messenger Muhammad. Islam teaches people about God’s messenger Muhammad and his followers. The Islamic teachings started in Saudi Arabia and expanded to different places around the world. There are 5 different pillars to Islam and they explain the different teachings. The pillars are, Shahadah, Salat, Sawm, Zakat and Hajj. The meaning of Islam is “Peace through submission to god”. Islam rapidly spread because of trade, peoples’ beliefs and conquest.

Islam can be traced all the way back to 7th century saudi arabia. Allah gave the Quran to the angel Gabriel and he gave it to prophet Muhammad and he introduced islam in 610 A.D. Islam existed before Muhammad but it had about 70 families that followed it. Some famous people who followed this religion was Muhammed Ali, Kevin Gates, and Akon.

Islam originated 610 AD in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Throughout time there are many stories and legends on how Islam sprung. According to the Quran it declares, that the holy book of Islam was brought down by angel Gabriel from Allah. Angel Gabriel gave the holy book to Prophet Muhammad. To prove this, the Quran states, "this is a revelation from the Lord of the universe. The Honest Spirit (Gabriel) came down with it, to reveal it into your heart that you may be one of the warners, in a perfect Arabic tongue" (Sura 26:192-195). Allah is everything, nothing is above him. I found it interesting that, “Allahu Akbar!” means “God is greater”. I had no idea what it meant but I had heard it before. Allah’s Prophet is Muhammad. Muhammad is the messenger he is how Allah’s message can be shared with the people. Muhammad’s call is when the angel Gabriel gave the command to “Recite!” He had recited the words of the angel and that night is known to be, “The Night of Power”. This incident there are the two most important words in Islam: Qur’an (recite) and the other is submission. Ummah is also important in Islam because it means the community of people who surrender to God. To be Muslim, you must surrender to God’s will and live a life of service. Being Muslim you must be willing to show public marks of servitude. Dar al-Islam, Dar al-Sulk, and Dar al-Harb are very important to Islam. Dar means “abode” and Dar al-Islam is talking about both state and religion of the Muslim people. Dar al-Sulk is talking about the rest of the world that isn’t Islam but has good relations with them. Dar al-Harb is about the last people who are not Muslim and don’t have good relations with Islam. Lastly, I find it interesting that there is a unifying power called Taqwa and Jihad which represent being devoted and devout.
