“Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal (The Gettysburg Address).” Some might know those words as the beginning paragraph of one of the greatest speeches ever written. The speech was presented by Abraham Lincoln on November 19,1863 in front of a crowd of 15,000 (Santamaria-Wheeler). He gave this speech at the dedication for a military cemetery at Gettysburg in Pe¬nnsylvania (Lincoln). A couple of months before the speech was given, this place was a war zone. It was the same place where the Battle of Gettysburg happened. The Battle of Gettysburg was fought between the Union and the Confederate soldiers, the North against the South. This battle was fought from July 1 to July 3, 1863 and nearly 46,000 men lost their lives on those tragic days (Rush, 2018). Lincoln wanted to give this speech to bring the states back together and he also wanted to honor all the soldiers who risked and lost their lives for a better future. One thing to remember about this speech is that Lincoln said that “all men are created equal.” Even if we are different races, different genders, we are all humans and we are all equal. He wanted this phrase to encourage the people to abolish slavery for good. Another important thing to remember about this speech is the amount of thought and dedication that Lincoln put into writing it. Even though it took Lincoln only a couple of minutes to speak, it took him a lot longer than a couple of minutes to write it. He saw how the world was before the war and he saw how it was after the war. He knew that this country could be better and he wanted to make a difference and make people think.
