Informational Interview

This past Thursday I had the opportunity to sit down and conduct a phone interview with Jordan Maleh. Jordan graduated from UConn in 2006 with a Bachelor’s in Sport Management and then his Master’s in Sport Management and Sociology in 2008. He currently works at the Big Ten Network in Chicago, Illinois as the Director of Digital and Consumer Marketing. As a graduating senior, this interview was very helpful to me because it gave me the chance to ask a professional in the sport industry, such as Jordan, questions about his experience at UConn and how he got his start in the sport industry and to where he is today.

For my informational interview I interviewed Hasty Elementary School Counselor Candace Thurman. Mrs. Thurman earned her B.A. in Psychology from Salem College and a MA Ed.S in Mental Health Counseling from Gardner Webb University. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Licensed School Counselor. Her maternal grandfather suffered from mental illness and was homeless. Seeing the impact his condition had on him as well as her family compelled her to choose a career in mental health. Mrs. Thurman worked in the middle school setting for 11 years. This year is her first year in an elementary school.

The Human Services Informational Interview was conducted on the phone I interviewed Tara Dakolios. She started in the Human Services field with a Master degree in Education from Virginia College and started working at the Hilton head Preparatory School. After working there for years she missed doing education and had an opportunity with the University of South Carolina Beaufort as an advisor. Before being in the Human Services Field she wasn’t aware of it being declared a major and knew she always had a passion for helping people. The skills utilized in the Human Services Field are being adaptive, organized, multi-tasking and time management. Many young students want to pursue a career in accounting but are still wondering whether the possibility of matching this job or not. In general, the accounting industry is considered the industry that many students including myself choose and study. Graduate, students easily find a job and have a steady income. Not only easy to find a job and a stable income, I began to choose accounting because of the peculiarity quite "comfortable" of the industry: not too demanding, picky, I just have to like working with the numbers and skills required when working with numbers. Since accounting is an indispensable part of all companies and organizations, so this is one of the best craft unemployment negligent that I want to purse.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Felicia Crump who is the Chief of Staff at Harlem RBI. Her upbeat and welcoming attitude made talking to her very easy. From growing up in central New Jersey to attending school in New York and then UConn, Crump has been able to open many doors in her professional career. Though she was not always interested in Sport Management, sport was always a big part of her life, as she was a starter for Hobart and William’s women’s soccer team in upstate New York. While playing collegiate soccer, Crump was studying art history and graduated in 2002. In 2008, Mr. Boston was promoted to Athletic Director. Mr. Boston’s work as Athletic Director focused 85% of the time on administrative matters including physical education curriculum development and review, athletic programs management, class scheduling, budget matters and staff supervision. Mr. Boston also served on the school’s Board of Trustees during this time.

For this informational interview assignment, I interviewed Adam Kohlmeier who is the self-employed investor who currently working on entering the real estate business. When I started looking in to who I should interview for this assignment I decided to ask some friends and people around me if they knew anybody who was a businessman with a financial aspect and I got back a lot of names and one of the names that showed up a couple times was Mr. Kohlmeier. The people that mentioned him all have gone to him for financial advice or just to talk about the stock market. Reaching out to Mr. Kohlmeier not sure what to expect but he graciously excepted the interview and along the way he gave me some great information about business, investing and what are some of the things it takes to be successful when you work for yourself.

Q3: How satisfied are you with your career opportunities / work choices within the business?

A Sports Management Degree offers a wide array of job opportunities and possibilities. Sports management careers are popular due to the passion many people have for athletics and it allows non-athletes to work within the sport field. One aspect to note is that there are 3 main segments within this field. These include; sports performance, production, and promotion. Each offer unique opportunities in the athletics field. A performance career would be a Recreation Worker, a production career would be an University Athletic Director (A.D.), and a promotion career would be a Sports Event Planner. Ultimately, after analyzing all 3 sectors, the production segment distinguishes itself in terms of size and scope, growth trends, and it allows the non-athlete the most opportunity to direct and guide University athletics.

The major of Sports management has always been intriguing to me; I have always wanted to be apart of sports whether it is in the communications field or in the sports management field. This assignment allowed me to look at the different jobs that are available to sports management majors. The research I conducted involved sports agents, Equipment managers, Directors of sports marketing, professional scouts, and athletic directors. I felt these five areas were the most intriguing and gave me different spectrums of the business that is sports.

In the process of conducting an informational interview with a professional working in a career field of my interest, I have chosen to find someone who is in the field of Project Management. Considering that the Bachelor of Arts degree in Enterprise Leadership would give me a solidified background allowing students to hone their skills in innovation, entrepreneurship, communication, critical thinking, problem solving and leadership (iowajpec.org) along with a Business Administration minor, I think I could obtain the abilities for this career and is something I’d like to pursue. The person I’ve interviewed is Brittany Hoffman who has recently been promoted to Project Management Senior Consultant on the Implementation Strategy and Operations

Conducting interviews is fundamental as a case manager. In order to understand more about good interviewing, I decided to watch an interview about an addict mother conducted by Dr. Phil. While watching this interview, I made some notes on attitudes and characteristics that I considered important for good interviewing. The characteristics will be presented in the following paragraphs.

Awareness and education are vital for the overall health in America. The following interview is with my mom, Shannon Forsythe, in which I asked her the following questions about certain events today and her views and ideas on it. What I found interesting through the interview was that her awareness of health was extremely low and that she hadn’t heard or was unaware about certain health issues. Her view on health was this:
