“While the number of barbers in Maine has been in decline over the past 12 years, the number of licensed cosmetologists has increased slightly between 2001 and today.” “Renee Vigue worked alongside her mother for 25 years in her own salon located in Oakland.” “You never really hear of hair salon going out of business.” Renee said. Of all the barbering students about 50% of them are female. Half of that 50% are African American. New technology and techniques continue to develop in the barbering industry. More and more men and women chose barbering as a profession. The barbering profession has become a lucrative business. Today’s barbershops are extending pampering services to the customers. The barbers are offering beer and maybe a nip of whiskey. A big change from – “Good morning, sir said the barber.” “Would you care to take a seat?” “What is it? Said the customer.” “It’s this little rock said the barber.” “You bend your knees and put your bum on it.” (Coren
African American women's health, hair politics, and physical activities. Studies show that African American women tend to pay more attention to their hair instead of their health issues. Researches came up with a theoretical argument to figure out why hair matter for some women. They discover that hair presents a barrier to exercise in that the time and economic restrictions involved in maintaining a hairstyle post exercise for physical activity as prohibitive. This study provides some perception about the relationship between hair and health for African American women and suggests that extra attention is justified to address views about beauty ideals and hairstyles as a barrier to exercise (Versey, 2014, p. 2015)

According to an article from dailymail.co.uk., men are spending more time worrying about grooming which is a push brought on by the media and current trends. "Apparently, men spend 83 minutes a day on personal grooming, including cleansing, toning and moisturising, shaving, styling hair and choosing clothes." the article is about men and how more and more men are practicing a more concerned lifestyle of metrosexuality, in which they focus on their looks and physical representation more then the regular man. These behaviors are catching on and have become the new norm. It's quite normal for men to trim and or clean shave most if not all of their body, for the sake of looks and hygiene. Without all of the excess hair, you have a less susceptible spot for sweat to build up and bacteria to grow. I really like the way they phrased these changes in the article. "Simon Comins, of Superdrug, said: 'Once upon a time it was cool for men to appear rough and ready, looking like they hadn't spent more than a couple of minutes getting ready in the morning. "But these days, everyone appreciates a man who takes care of his appearance, smells nice and looks like he has made an effort.".
Chris Rock’s documentary, Good Hair, investigates the notion of what good hair is. Dominant society views good hair as straight or essentially caucasian hair. This is not only problematic to the self-esteem and confidence of black women, but it can also cause black women to appropriate Asian culture. Black women unfortunately take advantage of Asian culture in search of what society believes is good hair. Many black women wear weaves in order to align to what society believes is good hair. However, when they buy this hair, they do not realize what Asians go through. Likewise, Asians who give up their hair do not know where or who this hair will be going to. Thus, this desire for good hair further perpetuates the lack of understanding that black
‘The barber man was small and flash, as barbers mostly are, he wore a strike-your-fancy sash, he smoked a huge cigar.’
On 4-30-18, Educationally Related Mental Health Services (ERMHS) specialist, Anna Komperda, interviewed Ewan's mother, Ashten Barber. (Mr. Barber was not available for the interview). Mrs. Barber reported her main concern is Ewan's difficulty verbalizing his feelings. Mrs. Barber stated, "Ewan has a hard time verbalizing his feelings when he is upset, however, has made improvements over the past few months."
Majority of us guy’s go to a barbershop to get a sharp haircut or just to kick back and get a laugh out of all the crazy and funny story’s that customers or barbers like to share. At times that barber can be a role model to us younger gentlemen because some of us might of grew up without a father figure in are life and he could show a positive example of what a hardworking man should be or basically just because he is a man’s best friend because that 30-45 minute haircut could include some of the best advice that you have ever received from another person. But one thing that 50% of us didn’t know that Barber’s in the early ages were Barber surgeons, which meant that they were surgeons and also dentists performing most of the duty’s that a normal dentist or surgeon would do now a days. So that’s why I decided to do my Research paper on how barbering has changed over the year’s! I’ve spent various amount of hours shadowing barbers who are veterans in the barber business and well known and respected among the barber community and also been attending barber battles and competition’s around the Bay Area just so I can see the different types of styles a certain type of crowd might have over a certain crowd and to experience that real barber brother and sister connection there is that is well known and respected among different barbers nation and country wide. With this experience of shadowing barbers and spending time in barbershops I’ve seen the art of barbering is a beauty many
The Black community’s ears are attuned to the sounds of the salon—the drone of clippers, scissors snick-snipping locks of hair, gossiping voices muffled by the hum of a hooded dryer. But Chicagoans might hear something new as they sit in the salon chair: medical advice.
Black popular culture defined in the “The Repertoire of Black Popular Culture” is an arena of daily life in any culture that actualizes, engenders, operationalizes, or signifies pleasure, enjoyment, and amusement according to the beliefs, values, experiences, and social institutions of people of African descent in particular but also other racial groups in general (Nelson). Hair in black popular culture is prominent because the media defines what is “good” hair. The defining hair based off different grades of hair makes it seem that other types of hair are not good enough, nappy, and uncontrollable. In this paper I will address how hair affects the self-esteem of African Americans. I will also address different hairstyles that are a part of the black culture, and how they have evolved throughout popular culture.
Our mission is to satisfy each customer and instill professionalism back into black owned barbershop businesses in the inner city.
As you enter the Salon you can practically tell it is an Indian Salon through its scent. I’m not dividing areas based on smell, but overall when you enter you’ll almost smell the Indian culture with “henna”, a form of temporary Indian tattoo used on women on their wedding or other celebratory occasions. The salon also does not fail to hide its culture background as it welcomes all Indians or any other south Asian cultural women into their salon. The sofas set up there for waiting customers are shiny with bright colors, colors that signify happiness as they are also used for brides’ dresses or the color outline for wedding locations. The salon uses these colors to welcome the fellow brides or people wanting to get ready for weddings to come to the salon for grooming. Walking further inside the salon towards the waiting area there is a small television set up on the wall facing the sofas. The television solely plays Indian music videos welcoming more Indians into their salon. My first impression of that salon was captured as a discomforting social setting, although I share almost the same culture as Indians, seeing how closed off it was solely to the Indian community made me wonder their acceptance towards other cultures. It was not just the decorations that led up to my negative behavior towards the salon, but it was also the lack of diversity among workers. As you walk in to the salon, you’ll hear all these workers talking to each other in Hindi, or similar language, making the customer feel awkward and unwelcomed. Although they were very welcoming to me on my first visit, I didn’t really pay attention to the other females, or other races coming in, my first judgment was they were only this friendly because I might share similar cultural values. I felt as if other customers were to hear them they

Short and medium-length beard styling is easiest with a beard wax. Avoid using a wax product designed for the hair, because it has too much grip and makes the beard becomes inflexible and cakey. Barber & Books beard wax is a mixture of several different vaxsorter for optimum gloss and smoothness, as well as a dry finish, as opposed to oily. Apply lightly on the surface of the beard, the locking of the hair, and dress with a comb . Preferably choose a brush with dense bristles, giving a natural smooth, sleek
According to the above content, the field I will be researching is in regard to two aspects of studies: one is about the social meanings of hair; another is about the relationship between women and their hair management. The former one helps me to explain the reason why hair has potentials to be the subject in my project. The latter one mainly explains the reason why women’s hair can be a site of women’s narratives.
