Industrial Revolution Effects On American Society

As Stephen Gardiner once said, “The industrial revolution was another one of those extraordinary jumps forward in the story of civilization.” The Industrial Revolution was in fact an extraordinary jump in the development of the U.S. It created a foundation for what the U.S is today socially, economically, and politically. The Industrial Revolution played a major role in the industrialization and modernization and still has effects to this day. These effects lead to more trade, better transportation, and modernization. It also had had many negative effects on America and England as well. These effects mainly focus on the social side of the Industrial Revolution. These effects include child labor, unfair wage, poor living conditions and poverty. When both the positive and negative effects are put together as a whole, the positive effects outweigh the negative. Mainly because they had a bigger effect on America and the world as a whole, and still affect us today. Because of the Industrial Revolution wages are more fair, living conditions are better, Manufacturing has drastically improved and children are no longer allowed to work in factories.

Throughout the course of the early 1700s and 1900s the world started to become introduced to the production of machinery. Starting in Europe and expanding into the Americas we today classify this era as the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial revolution put the use of hand tools downward while bringing up the use of factory machines. Factory machines by the late 1800s would soon replace farming with manufacturing at a large scale in the nation. This was seen to be a malificent time, for people from all around the world would be drawn to the Americas. Rockefeller. These men took hold of their respective industry and held extreme amounts of power in society. At the same time, there were many negative factors of the Industrial Revolution that gave America a distorted image. The transition at the beginning was not an easy one for the Americans, this effort took fifty years and created an emotional change in the country 's financial history. The Industrial Revolution helped shape America with the help of the industrialists and the growth of the industries they supported and ran.

The Industrial Revolution was a time where people started to make goods using machines instead of making handmade goods. During this time period people started moving towards cities. The Industrial Revolution had a negative impact on society. Three of these negative impacts were that people lived in tenements, working conditions were horrific, and children were forced to work. The first trade to become industrialised was the textile industry. In 1771 a cotton-spinning mill was opened by Richard Arkwright, which was powered by a water mill. Later, in 1779, Samuel Crompton invented a newer cotton-spinning device called a spinning mule. Eventually, Edmund Cartwright invented a loom that could be driven by a steam engine, this was in 1785. As a result of these new inventions cotton manufacturing boomed. Iron production also grew promptly. In 1784 a man named Henry Cort (1740-1800) invented a much better way of making wrought iron. Until then men had to beat hot iron with mallets to remove contaminations. The result was a massive increase in iron manufacturing. New factories were the result of these new advances in technology. Large industrial buildings usually employed one central source of power to run a whole group of machines.

No longer were people living together in peace, rather their homes became crowded apartments. Those who chose to not leave the country were treated by rich landowners, who pushed enclosures in order to gain pastures. There actions caused farm workers to be thrown out of work, and forced to work within the city. The unemployed migrated into the towns and cities, growing the labor force of factories.
