In Julia Alvarez’s novel, In the Time of Butterflies, different types of figures of speech were used to help the main idea come across. In conjunction, Julia Alvarez also organized the novel in a way that all four sisters have a chance to tell their story. Creating the novel in this way heavily affected how the story came out. If these special effects were not incorporated into the novel, the story would not have the same gut wrenching effect.
Julia Alvarez begins her story with a sit down interview between Dede and an interested investigator of her family’s story. The Mirabal sisters live in a home with strict rules in which to do anything they have to ask for permission. This leaves the girls with the feeling of entrapment. Once the girls convince their father of letting them go to school to obtain an education one of the Mirabel sisters Minerva mentions, "I'd just left a small cage to go into a bigger one, the size of our whole country (Chapter 2, page 13)." This particular quote signifies just how trapped these girls are and how even out of their home, their whole country, being ruled by a dictator, is in a way a “cage”. The family is catholic and some different biblical events are used to symbolize different events that occur in the family. The mention of an angel coming to Mary to tell her she was pregnant (Chapter 2, page 11) symbolized how it took a miracle for the girl’s father to allow them to go to school. Maria Teresa gaining a soul (Chapter 3) symbolized how she came to be more of a woman and accepted into the family. It wasn’t until after her communion that she was accepted into Minerva’s circle of loyalty and secrets. The symbolism of Christ’s resurrection in three days (Chapter 10) was used as a false ideology and instead of getting a resurrection another member of her family was taken
