1. How does your project improve a current practice —How is this proposed change in practice new or different from current practice? This study will focus on improving existing communication patterns between residents and staff through increased awareness. By engaging staff in a collaboration to understand positive communication, it will provide alternatives for verbal interactions with residents. This will allow staff to improve their ability to effectively meet the needs of residents through the use of positive communication patterns. The intent of this study is to help staff develop positive communication patterns and reduce elderspeak which is based on the work by (Williams, 2001, 2006) and Williams et al. (2003). This awareness should increase staff use of empowering communication with residents. Study findings will be used to provide information and collaborate with staff on positive communication patterns to improve the quality of life for all residents by communicating empowerment through positive interaction and a reduction in the use of …show more content…
Williams (2001) found that educating health care workers about positive communications and elderspeak, improved residents overall sense of wellbeing. This study will focus on collaborating with staff to increase positive communication patterns. The study will result in a deeper understanding of positive, effective communication with residents which can be shared and used by the facility. Reducing the use of elderspeak in the nursing home could increase positive messages and empower residents to have a voice in their care. Helping staff understand and develop positive communication will be the focus of the study. Understanding positive patterns of communication could result in an improved sense of self-determination for
Communication eases anxiety of the patients and eliminates more possibilities for mistakes, and lets each party know what is expected of them it also helps the care worker to communicate and use their skills to meets the service user’s rights and needs. In a care home, there are elderly people who may have speech difficulties, be hard of hearing, but the care worker should not use the effective communication skills too much because if the care worker speaks to one of the elderly which has hearing difficulties he must ensure he does not speak to loud as the elderly person may feel intimidated and may feel that the care worker is
Elderspeak is a common communication method that is used in nursing homes, acute care hospitals, and other settings where elders reside. It is also frequently used when we speak to older adults, regardless of the particular setting. This style of speech is characterized as being much slower, having an exaggerated intonation, elevated pitch and volume, greater repetitions, and incorporates a simpler vocabulary and grammar than normal adult speech. Research has shown that the speech pattern used typically with the elderly is based on stereotyping and myth as opposed to the reality of the aging process. A number of researchers have conducted studies where a brief educational program was designed to increase the awareness of Certified Nursing
This is essay is going to be based on the importance of communication within the broader context of health and social care, it will give you a definitive insight to different communication techniques, such as verbal and non-verbal communication. Within this essay I will also discuss how important effective communication can be and the barriers that can restrict the care practitioner from doing his/her job effectively by using communication as the main tool. Furthermore how personal beliefs and values need to be taken in to consideration and the effect it may have on a service user in the light of working professionally.
At regular resident meeting we discuss a range of topics and the residents say what they want in the way of activates, dinner and other things. During this discussion we may talk about health issues and possible ways of dealing with them. Also I have general talks with management and colleagues and we discuss our feeling regarding raising awareness or if we may need extra training in certain areas.
Unit 051 – Promote Communication in Health, Social Care or Children’s and Young Peoples Settings.
Describe two ways how effective communication can affect relationships in an adult social care setting between individuals using the service, their carers, colleagues and other practitioners
Aix Identify three services or sources of information and support that enable effective communication in an adult social care setting.

It would be assumed that extensive research has been put into studying the effects of active listening in nursing practice, especially regarding the older population. This is considering that active listening is one of the keys of an effective therapeutic relationship. On the contrary little research has been done on the effects of active listening in older adults living in long-term care settings. The article The Experience of Being Listened To: A Qualitative Study of Older Adults in Long-Term Care Settings explores the necessity of active listening from the perspective of older adults who currently live in long-term care facilities. The research problem in this article is the importance and the experience of being listened to among the older population living in long-term care environments. Research in this area has significant importance in all areas of nursing care, especially with older adults, since listening plays a major role in the quality of care a patient receives. The research question stemming off of the research problem asks what the meaning behind the experience of being listened to is for older adults. An assumption made by the authors about the research problem is that healthcare providers directly caring for resident’s in long-term care facilities have the most opportunity to make a difference in their patient’s lives through active listening.
AC1.4: Analyze the use of strategies to support users of health and social care services with specific communication needs:
The following paper is a reflection of my York Care Centre resident visitation in which I will discuss my experiences. Throughout this paper I will be reflecting upon my feelings, thoughts, learning moments and my abilities both successes and failures to connect with residents and how I apply the skills and concepts that I was learning in this course. Additionally, I will also include scholarly references to support a point in my reflection.
Elderspeak is a way of speaking to older persons. Elderspeak is characterized as condescending, with slowed rate, higher volume, simplified sentences, and emphasis on the most substantial elements of the sentence. When I had a job in Physical Therapy Department, I had experiences with older patients such as stroke, osteoarthritis, and facial palsy, etc. I had since experienced to identify the features of elderspeak. I had learned to change my attitude, and from that attitude the person’s language might appear the following features of elderspeak: speaking slowly, speaking loudly, using the pronouns “we,” “us,” and “our” in place of “you.” Also, I can speak about something happened in the old past, because they like to speak about it. During
For this visit summary, I have interviewed a 90-95-year-old assisted living resident that will be re-named Joyce for the purpose of this paper. Before constructing the interview, I was very excited and anxious to meet the resident I was interviewing for the first time. Upon arrival, I was put to ease once meeting a genuine elderly woman in the lobby that was just as excited to meet me for the first time. When reflecting on the interview I am glad to have had prior knowledge on therapeutic communication of older adults. I had seemly used all of the tips that the book had highlighted. These tips include attentive listening, authentic presence, clarifying, keeping focus, and providing intervals of silence (Touhy & Jett, 2016, p. 67).
