What does a dysfunctional family look like? The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls was about her a her family and the struggle they had to go through. This memoir shows how a girl and her siblings got out of a lousy cheap lifestyle. She started her story from when she was a toddler and burned herself while she cooked a hotdog on the stove to having a successful life in New York City. In “ The Glass Castle”, Jeannette Walls uses humor to describe the ups and downs about her life. She also shows how forgiving she is even though her parents put her and her siblings through hell. In my opinion, summer readers going into the 12th grade should read this book.
In “The Glass Castle”, Jeannette Walls uses humor to make her depressing story more encouraging and comforting. In the story, you learn how her family survived on little food and money. They moved around a lot running away from bill collectors. Her dad was an alcoholic and her mom was lazy. Some funny moments in this story was how her mom learned that you could put mayonnaise to make your hair grow, but what she didn’t know is that you had to wash it out. Her father,Rex, was a horrible person. He slept around, abused his wife and kids, was an alcoholic, and had his family on the run. He made excuses for everything he did and made his family and everyone else believe him. He was a manipulative person. One good thing I can say about her father is that he was a smart man. He taught his daughter calculus at a young age. And he was good at using his resources. As for the mother, she was a lazy human being. She stayed home and didn’t have a job even though her family was broke. She knew the father was an alcoholic and abusive but still stayed with him.
