Zappos employees truly believe that above all else, the secret to customer loyalty is making corporate culture a priority which is directly driven from their Human Resource management.
Screening
Understanding Zappos high regard to corporate culture and customer satisfaction, they take screening for new employees very seriously and have methods to select only those individuals that will promote their corporate philosophies. Even with Amazon.com’s acquisition of the online retailer in 2009, Zappos.com culture and customer loyalty are as strong as ever.
Recruiting
Looking for candidates that fit with Zappos ideals has its struggles. Christa Foley, the recruiting manager at Zappos.com says their tops three issues with recruiting are how they hire someone with the technical skills that will also fit in their corporate culture; ways to incorporate social media in recruiting; and finding the right technical employees which is actually their biggest challenge (Moran, 2011).
Selection
All potential candidates will go through at least two interviews; a culture fit interview with the HR department and a technical fit interview with the hiring manager and possibly members of the team they would be working with. Like I stated before in the introduction, it allows to evaluate the different reactions of candidates; namely how they react toward a stressful situation and how well they respond to questions. It also allows to know whether a candidate is motivated about the job he/she is applying for. It then becomes clear or easy for the recruter to decide whether a certain candidate will be a good fit to the organization given his/her qualifications. Thus, this type of interview requires some preparation from the interviewer. The preparation is basically reviewing the EEO (Equal Employment Opportunity) laws that allow the recruiter to avoid any kind of discrimination, developing an applicant profile by means of competency-based, behavior-based and talent-based techniques, and finally assessing what applicants want in an interviewer (friendliness, honesty…) and in a position that they are applying for (environment and culture in the organization). On top of preparation, the recruiting interview requires some kind of structure. A good recruiting interview needs to be highly structured. Otherwise, it won’t allow the recruiter to get as much information as possible from the interviewee. There is more than one way to look for employees. My friend, Jonathon Montgomery wanted to start up a small marketing business for local restaurants and sought to hire lot employees to spread the word around town. He went on craigslist to create an ad and three days later he found himself interviewing multiple groups of people to fill the role. He did not have as much trouble in the interviewing process, but he has a lot of trouble in the selection process. In the selection process, it is important to understand the strategy used to select the most qualified employee for the position. Selection the right employee is important and was really important to Jonathon. Like most other department managers, the primary function of a human resource manager is responsible for overseeing department functions as well as managing employees. This is why the human resource manager must be extremely familiar with every square inch of each discipline of human resource management.
