For this assignment I was asked to select a topic in which we have studied during the weeks of nine through eleven. I have selected to explore Stress and Stress Management more in depth. In this assignment I will explain what made me want to know more about it. I plan on telling you what you should know about Stress and Stress Management. Lastly, I will discuss how Stress and Stress Management relate to success in my personal and professional life. Selecting this topic was very easy for me because the past few days have been very stressful. I have recently endured a stressful situation in which I have never encountered before. I recently interviewed for a new position, and survived the stress of the interview process. Two weeks later I received a call back offering me the position. This was great news, but the call came five minutes after I had arrived to work for my twelve hour shift. After, the five minute conversation I accepted the offer, but proceeded to tell her I would need to get back with her on the wage offer. The stress I felt in that moment was positive. According to our text this form of stress is known as eustress. Eustress is a good stress, not to mention it is desirable (Lamberton & Minor, 2014). I agree with Kelly McGonigal, not because whatever she said, is true about stress, but I feel that situation in my life. As she said that stress can be the healthier and gives you joy and meaning of a life. For example, I am not sure that this has been with me since I born, but I need stress in order to survive, and studying well because if I don’t have stress than I feel like helpless, or shiftless. Our book describes stress as “any circumstances that threaten or are perceived to threaten one’s well-being and tax one’s coping ability” (Weiten, 2014). Stress is not necessarily a traumatic, life destroying event. It can be as simple a small change in one’s daily schedule. People will have multiple stresses throughout their lifetime. Some will be little and daily, but overtime these add up and can affect you in many ways. Stress can be positive or negative and can take many forms; a few being frustration, internal conflict, change, and pressure. All of which make almost a daily appearance in my life (Weiten, 2014).
A paper due, bills to pay, kids are screaming, a test in every class, going through a divorce, meetings to attend and going to soccer practice after school. These are just a few everyday aspects of life. Everyone is busy in today’s multitasking world. However, it is important to stop and think, even on the most hectic days. Stress, America’s silent killers. Stress affects people of all ages, ethnicities and genders. Due to its complex nature the concept of stress is constantly being studied. Extensive research has discovered that stress can cause both psychological, and physiological issues. I’m writing on the concept of stress because it is something I have been able to identify with as a transitioning college student. Sara Munns in her essay “Keep Calm And Stress On”, argues the negative perception of stress, propagated by modern society has led to an unnecessary push towards lifestyles aimed at mitigating stress in daily life. To give her readers a new perspective of stress, she focuses on the positive aspects of stress and how with the proper view it can benefit its recipient.
