The area of interest for my research this semester revolves around music and children. My three research questions are 1. How does music affect behavior? 2. How do different types of music affect development in children? 3. Does music have a substantial role in child development? I chose this as my area of interest because I have always been passionate about both music and children. I grew up listening to a wide variety of music. Hip-hop, Country, R&B, Opera, Jazz, Rap, Pop, etc. I was also involved in many choirs, and even got the chance to participate in a couple musicals. My appreciation for music has grown substantially over the years, as well as my interest in its effects. Children are another major part of my life as I have always been intrigued by them. If something as common as music has a significant effect on development, research can be extremely important for people trying to make informed decisions for their children. Referencing the title, I know The Incredibles made a remark insinuating that playing Mozart for a baby can make them smarter. Though the research on the Mozart Effect and IQ has shown no significant discovery, the inspiration behind this is brilliant. Music has to have some sort of effect on the brain, further than slight stimulation. There must be a reason that many kids toys, tv shows, books etc. use a lot of music; especially educational media. We must consider what else could cause babies to be more intelligent than the rest of babies in the same age group. Alternate reasons may be causing babies to be smarter, which leads to the scientific principle: ruling out rival hypotheses. This hypothesis that believes Mozart’s music can make an individual keener, having said that, is it only classical music that is affecting a child’s brain? A child can simply become smarter as his/her parents read books to them even if they’re less than a year old. Children can become clever by the selected television shows they watch, of course by having parents choose a well-disciplined program. Music can boost a child’s emotions, but other factors such as a meaningful conversation or playing games and activities that stimulate a child’s brain are much more plausible. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a group of conditions of the brain development. (Vries, 2015). The main characteristic of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is that they have difficulties to adapt and interact with other people. Also, individuals with Autism have problems with their development of verbal and nonverbal communication. They show a repetitive behavior that is usually recognized during the first three years of life. Approximately one of sixty eight children are affected with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the United States. (Vries, 2015).
Music can definitely make differences and can help the human’s motor and reasoning skills. Cases have been reported that children who have at least three years of experience in the music world perform better than those who are not. These children were tested on nonverbal reasoning skills which includes analyzing visual information such as comparing and contrasting shapes and patterns.
