“The French Revolution was period of far-reaching social and political upheaval in France and its colonies that lasted from 1789 until 1799. It was partially carried forward by Napoleon during the later expansion of the French Empire. The Revolution overthrew the monarchy, established a republic, catalyzed violent periods of political turmoil, and finally culminated in a dictatorship under Napoleon who brought many of its principles to areas he conquered in Western Europe and beyond.” (French Revolution,n.d.). There are hundreds of paintings, sketches, and comics influenced by the French Revolution and especially Napoleon Bonaparte. Many of the works were painted by one artists, in particular. The artist was an active supporter of the revolution and supported his friend on his regime(Robespierre). David painting, Napoleon crossing the St. Barnard pass, displays Napoleon gallantly riding into battle. Golden colors were used on Napoleon’s cape, pant, and hat. These colors indicate Napoleon’s godliness. The white horse may also symbolize godliness or purity, but there are four other version of this painting that have darker colored horses as well as a more Ominous background. It was a pledge signed by members of the Third Estate and the some members of the first Estate to never separate until a constitution was written.
