How Has Writing Improved My Writing

Upon entering Columbia College, writing was one of my weaker areas. It was very important that I gained the necessary knowledge and confidence to become a better writer. I didn’t know how to express myself and felt as though my writing was not my interest. As a result of taking English 101, I have gained a better understanding on how to properly research and build a satisfactory paper. Every paper that was assigned seemed like a struggle to complete. Before entering this class, I did not know the meaning of a thesis or why it was important, however, I obtained this skill quickly. I noticed that every paper has an argument and the thesis helps clarify the rebuttal. Now, I have a new outlook on writing. It’s a way to express my thoughts and allow others to see things through my eyes. There is no doubt that I still have a long way to go, but I know if I continue to write, I will get better. Just as I developed more skills in class, the various papers assigned helped to better structure the writer in me. In addition, the subject areas were not only interesting, but very informative and made it much easier to write about my experiences.

A good writer is someone who knows how to write well, have ideas to put on paper and write a well-organized essay that answers the question that a professor gives to you. I identify my own writing by not being good because I have issues sometimes getting words on paper, organizing the essay and my grammar is not very well. The methods that are effective for improving my own writing is practice writing and have someone proof read my work. I am in COM100L because my grammar is not good and my writing on paper is all over the place. My expectation for this course is to improve my grammar when I write essays and fix my mistakes when I write.

Writing is one of the most important skills that I have learned throughout my years in school. I have learned that no matter how much I love or hate it, writing is a necessity; I might as well try to be good at it. Writing has been in my life for many years. There are many types of writing, educational writing and personal writing are two that I will mention in this essay. I have learned how to allow writing to help me in my daily life. When I began writing I hated it, however, I have learned the many uses of it, and it has become a huge part of my life.

Bettering your skills of writing is extremely important because writing can help you with several different aspects throughout your life. You have to be willing to learn and give yourself the proper amount of time and knowledge in order to do well. Writing is a skill that many authors use to show their style or qualities. Writing is such a great experience and it allows you to tell stories, or speak your opinions. It gives you opportunities to speak up and show your worth. There is two important steps for writing, one is to always think positive, and two is always believe in what you have to say. Many people struggle with writing at times and that's because they haven't thought out their ideas all the way or showed their full potential yet. It takes time to become a good writer.

After this semester of English 102, at Bristol Community College I feel that I have gained the skill to articulate what I want to convey to the reader in many ways. I don’t just look at grammatical error, but instead I look for ways to make my sentences more effective and concise. Nevertheless, I hope that this strategy will continue to help me improve my writing even further on in the future.

Writing is an essential part of everyday life. Although not everyone shares that same passion for it, there are many reasons as to why we write. In the textbook (The St. Martin's Concise Guide To Writing) we are given the following reasons as to why we write; write to communicate, write to think, write to learn, write to succeed, and write to know yourself and connect to other people. These examples that we are given are pretty straight forward and self explanatory. Not only are you communicating to others, but you are also communicating to yourself through pen and paper. Finally, writing will help you to expand your knowledge and your horizons an a profoundly manner that will change your perspective of any academic assignment or even in your everyday life.

In today’s workforce, jobs are heavily based upon the skills that one has and how well one can perform them in their field of study. A major component skill that lacks in many young people today is writing. Writing plays is an important role in life, one needs it to communicate with other people. Have you ever felt incompetent because you wrote a horrible essay, or have you ever saved a whole essay for the night before? Have you ever wanted to die because you are writing the absolute most boring topic ever? If yes was the answer to any of those questions, I suggest taking Writing in the Liberal Arts with Professor Hilsher at Houghton College. It benefited me greatly. Before I took this class, I did not care if my essays were mediocre or boring. I just wanted to hand them in. Writing 101 has changed my perspective on writing. I learned many specific things that cleared my writing up, writing a rough draft first is important, and finding ways to incorporate passions into all pieces makes a difference.

I think there are some areas that still needs to be improved in my writing. For example, I have always struggled with reaching the minimum length of the essays that I have written in this semester. I also need to work faster on my assignments, and mapping out a timetable would be great solution in order to finish on time.

This portfolio is a great example of how I improved as a writer. This second semester of duel enrollment English has helped me improve not only on becoming a better writer but as well as becoming more mature as a person and has helped me with time management. This portfolio includes the three best pieces that I have written this whole year. I hope you enjoy these pieces as much as I enjoy them.

Every day consists of writing, whether it is informal or formal. Writing comes in different forms including, emails, essays, text messages, and even note taking in class. I have gathered materials and assignments in my major to analyze what kind of writing is required and how it should be executed.
