Richard White’s 2011 book titled Railroaded: The Transcontinentals and the Making of Modern America is about the corrupt and mismanaged transcontinental railroads and bold arguments of the story how they came and went. In this book White describes how the construction of the transcontinental railroads across the US in the late nineteenth century would change America socially, economically, and politically. He also describes the companies that built these railroads and argues with three main points on why they were corrupt companies. First I’d like to go over the three different ways that the railroads would affect America, socially, economically, and politically. Socially these railroads would make the large country of America seem smaller because you could now get across the country in much less time by just taking a train from point A to point B. …show more content…

“…the transcontinental railroads’ social costs may have exceeded their social benefits…” (White, 460). With this statement White is saying that maybe the idea of building a railroad that spans the country looks better on paper than when it was actually built. It may seem like it can only help most people but in reality it may have hurt more. Mainly, many people actually lost money because of the railroads and how things had worked before, which brings us to our next way of change, economically. The next way the transcontinental railroads would change America is economically. These railroads would not only be a faster way to travel but you would also know the exact price to get from one place to another. Even though the price of a ticket wasn’t super cheap by any means, it would be all you have to pay.
