He studied hard to get high grades and he was even elected as the class president. He was doing his best, until his teacher went up to him and told him that his dream to be a lawyer, is not possible all because he is black. Instead, he insisted him to become a carpenter. From then, something started to changed within him. Malcolm sees the limit to the white acceptance, and the inevitable truth of what life awaits for the colored. He starts believing that in the white society he was living in, there is no success nor future. Spike Lee never really focused on Malcolm's childhood in the film, except for this particular part. Malcolm X, an African American leader and prominent figure in the Nation of Islam, was a significant individual in the African American fight for justice and equality. In contrast to the mainstream Civil Rights Movement with its nonviolent pursuit of integration, Malcolm X voiced concepts of race pride and Black Nationalism during the 1950s and '60s. Although many argue that Malcolm X did not actually “do” anything for the black community, his nontraditional programs brought a new perspective to the Civil Rights Movement, and this perspective is of relevance today in the black community.

Through his journey, we can see a shift in the way blacks were able to live among whites. He encouraged blacks to think for themselves, and whites to stop controlling them. We see that he had an abundance of trials that ended in errors in his movement. First, he was heading down a bad path but was saved by the Nation of Islam. As he began speaking, he fascinated people all around the world with his intelligence and ability to speak the truth. Malcolm X was a very controversial man who has inspired many people. He challenged the Civil Rights Movement by preaching about violence and pride amongst African American communities. How Malcolm X advanced and stood up for African Americans through his preachings and approach to use violence for self-defense is a question that is yet to be answered. Although Malcolm X promoted violence, he only meant to lead the Black community into a better life. This is significant due to the fact that Malcolm X’s demand for violence and self-defense challenged the Civil Rights Movement (which was occurring simultaneously) which clearly was against violence. In the times of the black community and its oppression from the whites, many predominate figures,groups,and movements came to play. Many of these legacies live today with us as a figure of what possibility and critical thinking can do for a generation. One of these great figures was civil rights activist; Malcolm X. Malcolm X or Malcolm Little was a huge key factor in the civil right movements in the late 1950s-1960s. He spoke against the injustice of the government, because of this many viewed his actions as too brash or extreme.

There are many people in history that are considered leaders. When we think of leaders what qualities come to mind? Who is the first person that comes to mind when you hear the word “leader”? For myself, Malcolm X, is the first person that I think of as a leader. Many people do not really think of him as a leader, but Malcolm X, was a great leader that helped lead the Nation of Islam, people during the civil rights movement, and also achieved many things.

Malcolm X was a self-educated man who was imprisoned for ten years. He converted to the Islam religion and preached separatist philosophy before he switched his ideas to the Civil Rights Movement.      Later in 1964, Malcolm X took off on a journey to Arabia to try and find the true religion of Islam. While in Arabia, he underwent his holy pilgrimage. This experience had a very positive impact on Malcolm X. While racial hatred in America had forced black people to the lowest levels of society, Malcolm had come into a society where race didn’t determine a persons role. While in Arabia, a white leader let Malcolm stay with him in his room, which would have been unheard of during the civil rights movements in the States. It was during this trip to Arabia that Malcolm made a big change in his way of life. He finally learned to trust people. He found out that the color of one’s skin doesn’t reflect what kind of person you are, but it’s ones actions that reflect the quality of a person.

Malcolm X stood for the civil rights of all people despite their personal affiliations but he especially focused on African-American’s and their right to equality. In Civil Rights Movement Encyclopedia Britannica stated, “Malcolm X was an early leader of this “black power” movement” (encyclopedia Britannica). Malcolm was an admirable person because he always knew he wanted to fight for something bigger than himself. He did so by fighting for the rights of millions of people because he knew it was the noble thing to do. Malcolm X was an important black leader and activist to the African American community and Nation of Islam in the 50’s and 60’s. He had a troubled childhood growing up in a time of awful racism. His childhood experiences affected him and his decisions for many years in positive and negative ways. Malcolm X was a strong willed man with huge ideas for the civil rights of African Americans that created a huge following of people for him. He did not feel that nonviolent approaches towards civil rights would result in change and had a different and more radical way of achieving it. Towards the end of his life he made a surprising change in his life and had completely different ideas for the struggle for civil rights.

Malcolm X was born Malcolm Little, but decided to change his name at some point because he considered his last name to be a slave name and wanted to change that piece of his family’s history. Malcolm was passionate about his cause, to say the least, and believed that only black people could change their unequal fate in America. Due to that philosophy, Malcolm did not allow for whites to help his “Black Power” party in any way, shape, or form. Malcolm also believed that black individuals should protect their rights by any means necessary and that inflicting violence was acceptable because it was for the cause. He was into focusing on religions for his background philosophy and even ditched the concept of racism when he found the Black Muslim religion did not support it.
