No matter the reference, most Americans know that Homeland Security has something to do with Terrorism. Until an actual attack occurs, or election season begins, the average person may never give any thought or credit to the Department of Homeland Security. The Department of Homeland Security was created in the aftermath of one of our nation's greatest tragedies: the events of September 11, 2001 (Newman, 2002). Almost immediately the Department began overseeing 22 federal agencies that pre-existed 9/11. The rationale for this transformation was to improve the coordination of the federal government's various security efforts both internally and externally in an effort to forestall any future terrorist threats. What has occurred, however, is a Cabinet Department that is highly bureaucratic with too many divergent responsibilities. Its effectiveness is questionable and serious consideration should be given to the abolition of the Department and its agencies reassigned to other Departments.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security was formed more than a decade ago with a very significant mission of safeguarding America's homeland from hazards, threats, and national disasters. This department conducts its mission through securing the country's borders, preventing terror attacks, and responding to incidents or threats to its citizens (Miller, n.d.). Generally, the most important roles of the Department of Homeland Security are to lead a concerted national effort in securing the United States and preserving the American way of life. The department was established in 2002 in reaction to the 9/11 terror attacks and has since developed a nationwide strategic plan for evaluating and updating its mission statement and effectiveness of operations. These plans can be updated and transformed to accomplish the needs of the Department for Homeland Security and the American people.

Since its inception the DHS has gone through a shift in terms of overall concepts and missions. Something had to be done to ensure the safety of American people and protecting the U.S. homeland against future terrorist attacks. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security was enacted shortly after the September 11th 2001 attacks and the creation of DHS was one of the most significant changes made by the U.S. government with a clear mission of protecting our homeland.

When evaluating what career path to take, I wanted something more than just protecting sensitive data, rather pursuing and investigating cybercrimes. After researching cyber security careers I found that the FBI is the one of the best agencies to combat cyber threats. Furthermore, the FBI is on the front lines of chasing cyber threats around the globe and assisting in cyber intrusions to help protect the United States economy and national security. In turn, this information lead me to their Computer Scientist Program which fits the criteria of employment I am seeking for a number of reasons. Predicting the future of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) would be similar to predicting the stock market. Those who come close are successful enough to understand it can change on any given day. They do not invest all in one business sector, they learn to respect the market, and they look for trends to aid in their decision. Nothing is guaranteed with the stock market and nothing guarantees DHS will still be an establishment in the next 10 years. Who is to say we are not years away from global peace? Though until then we need to focus on every-day trends that affect the general public.

The question that has been asked; given the amount of money spent on homeland security programs and practices, how should the United States measure the effectiveness of this spending? Since graduating high school, I have taken advantage of several opportunities to obtain formal education. Most notably, I have completed two associates’ degrees, one from Central Texas College with a major in applied technology, the other from Cochise College with a major in Intelligence Operations. Homeland security can be seen as a loosely based term as it is still a relatively new area of the United States strategy. Since its creation, post September 11, 2001, there has been a plethora of additions and revisions. The homeland mission lies not only within a specific agency, but demands collected participation from U.S. agencies and foreign entities to remain strong, efficient and innovative. One can examine homeland security as having the responsibility of maintaining and protecting the United States by keeping focus within the U.S. while homeland defense is responsible for maintaining the U.S. by keeping focus outside the U.S. Homeland security and homeland defense are different, but both can assist each other in certain aspects. The following paragraphs will compose of accurate definitions regarding homeland security, homeland defense and in end will discuss an in depth summary of the critical infrastructure program. These mentioned areas each have a requirement to be treated as specific in nature in order to not sacrifice their specific definition.

As an official of the Department of Homeland Security, it is vital for this organization to have an objective in maintaining strict control and security towards all U.S. airports while making sure danger does not occur.
