Hispanic Cultural Heritage

At this point in time reflecting on my past experiences I think the first thing I would do differently with my life is believe in myself and not doubt my decisions or my looks. Growing up I have always been made to feel ashamed of my dark skin, my bigger body and my hispanic heritage because it was different from what society had taught me and my family. If I knew no one would judge me I would embrace the darker pigmentation of my skin, accept my body for how it is and wear my heritage with pride. During the summer might go out swim Instead of staying inside and worrying about getting a little bit darker; I would stop wearing long sleeve shirts on the hottest day to avoid having people see the darkness of my skin. I would wear red lipstick

To be Mexican-American is to unconditionally love one’s family and all it stands for. Mexican-Americans are an incredibly close-knit group of people, especially when it comes to family. We are probably the only culture that can actually recite the names of our fourth cousins by heart. In this respect our families are like clans, they go much further than the immediate family and very deep into extended families. (p. 173)

Hispanic heritage is an important concept that surrounds my entire life. I have lived in Colombia until I turned fourteen years old. Colombia is a beautiful country in South America and consist of mostly Hispanic individuals. This culture has been important in my life because it helps define who I am and how I view the world. It was not until I moved to the United States that I began to become more aware of different ethnic groups. I grew up in a city where everyone was the same, looked the same and had the same cultural behaviors in our country.

A cultural analysis is a combination of many elements. Cultures have traditions, customs, habits, beliefs, practices, and values. Each culture can have different traditions in their own essence. These traditions can come from their ancestors ' and passed down the generations. However, some people don’t like to continue their ancestors traditions and adapt others customs from another culture. The culture change depending on the time and place. The enrichment of cultures consists of adaptation and acceptance of another culture 's beliefs. Not all of the people can tolerate other cultures, traditions, languages or stereotypes. Cultures attack or support other cultural values The Mexican culture is hard-working and are strict in their values and traditions. The power and oppression of the cultures are current; social and economic conditions in the people in cultures. The Mexican culture has social and economic conditions oppressed by the power of its Government. In the play “Los Vendidos” Luis Valdez, talks about the multiple accent and background of Mexican people.

The culture I choose to explore is the Hispanic culture. I choose this culture because many of the people I work with and many of my friends identify with the Hispanic culture and I feel it would be interesting to know more about a culture that is so relevant to my life. A few of the big things in Hispanic culture that I found interesting are language, traditions and food. Hispanic refers to a person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture.

The first time my mom went over to my dads house for dinner it showed how different their cultures are. They all sat down for dinner when my mom noticed there were no forks, confused she asked where she could get them. My dad and his family all laughed and proceeded to eat their dinner without forks and instead with tortillas. Later on, I was born into this mix of american and hispanic culture. My parents have shaped the cultural identity I have from the type of food I eat, my hobbies, and the values I have.

The Hispanic community accounts for the largest minority in the United States. The United States Census Bureau reported as of July 2006, the percentage of Hispanics in the nation had grown to 15. This percentage excludes the 3.9 million Puerto Ricans whom call America their home. This number puts the United States ranking third worldwide for largest Hispanic populations, with Mexico and Colombia holding the first and second ranking respectively (Pew Hispanic Center, 2009). Being from a Hispanic heritage means everything to me, but it does not define me. I come from a culture of hard workers, which means I will do as much as I need to in order to achieve the goals I have set for myself. I was raised to respect those around me because they are the reason why I have what I have. I believe being a Hispanic comes with the responsibility of putting others before me, but I know that it means I should never believe that I am less than the person next to me. My self-worth is not determined by how or where I was raised, it is determined by me. I may have more obstacles to overcome because I am a minority, but it makes me want to work harder towards a future that will pave the way for all those who will come after me.

The National Park Service and National Historic Landmark programs have listened to the call to action and in the last 10-years have focused efforts on highlighting the contributions of Latino Americans. In May 2011, the National Park Service launched the American Latino Heritage Initiative. Its goal was to develop and implement, and advance the representation with in the National Historic Landmarks Program. In the program’s first year, 2011-2012, 20% of new National Historic Landmarks were associated with Latino-American heritage (Progress Report 1). Another way that Latino-American heritage was included at National Historic Site, Landmarks, and National parks was to interpret sites including people and events associated with the heritage

Swarthmore's unique approach to liberal arts is appealing. The small campus size reminds me of exploring my current college campus. Reviews from current students have nearly always reported a close knit community backed by a mutual respect for other's viewpoints. Professors there, from multiple videos I have seen,put in extra work to ensure their students understand the material and are not merely memorizing. One featured a teacher in a room of no more than 6 students, debating. I would love to learn persuasion through debate.

Hispanic students who were brought at an early age through immigrant parents wanting to provide a better, safer environment for their kid may usually end up stuck and excluded. There are programs like Hispanic Unity that help their Hispanic community by providing a place for daycare, volunteer programs to teach kids, teenager and adults about important subjects necessary to succeed in the U.S. The classes range from studying for the citizenship test, or learning English, to filing taxes. They also provide help for family in need of clothes, shelter, food, materials. I would like to similarity build a team that sets a goal to inform and support their fellow community members. Every culture has their own unique and distinguishing characteristics. One’s cultural identity defines who they are as an individual, group, and community. Their cultural identity may be reflected in numerous ways such as: language, communication styles, religion, beliefs, values, clothing, or other types of aesthetic markers. Cultural identity is formed by many of these traits but is not limited to these specifically. This essay will provide detailed information on Mexican Americans, and their ancestry and heritage. I will also explain about this cultures central beliefs and values, while incorporating information on Mexican Americans, cultural patterns, cultural identity, and their cultures communication characteristics and styles.

In Louise A.N. Kerr’s Historical Research and Narrative, Louise discusses the cultural history of Mexican-Americans immigrating and living throughout Chicago. In the beginning of the article, Kerr discusses the large number of Mexicans who began arriving in Chicago after World War I. Originally, according to the article, before the turn of the twentieth century, the first few Mexican Americans came to Chicago primarily as entertainers. Of these people, according to Louise, only a few of them settled in Chicago. In the article Louise states that “The first large group of Latino immigrants to Chicago and the Midwest were Mexicans who arrived as contract workers to replace soldiers and European ethnic workers during World War I”. Since 1970, United States of America has seen a considerable amount of immigration because of economic chaos and civil wars in Latin American countries. The fight between the government of El Salvador and leftist guerrillas in 1980 brought about 500,000 immigrants to United States. They settled primarily in California, Florida, Massachusetts, and Washington, D.C. The civil war in Nicaragua in the year 1980 drove an estimated 800,000 Nicaraguan immigrants to the United States

The Hispanic culture is a major part of my life because half of my family is Hispanic and it is what I was raised with. This culture has effected the way I am in my everyday life.
