Gun related violence is violence committed with the use of a gun (firearm or small arm). Gun related violence may or may not be considered criminal. Criminal violence includes homicide (except when and where ruled justifiable), assault with a deadly weapon, and suicide, or attempted suicide, depending on jurisdiction. There was a total of 57,462 deaths due to gun violence in 2017. Americans are more likely to die from gun violence than many leading causes of death combined, with some 11,000 people in the US killed in firearm assaults each year.(Robinson 2017)How do you expect things to get better when this many people die because of something so dumb? According to Elizabeth Warren, ”we lose eight children and teenagers to gun violence every day.”(2016) The hashtag not one more was created so people can try to control the use of their guns and not have another person die. This hashtag was not effective because there was still a lot of deaths in the United States.
Largely ignoring nonfatal shootings means that Americans are both vastly underestimating and misunderstanding gun violence. Underestimating, because researchers are only barely beginning to measure the personal, familial, local, and societal costs of what Kalesan and others estimate are more than a million shooting survivors living in the United States; and misunderstanding, because nonfatal shootings can be quite different from those that result in death.
