Grey’s Anatomy: Something Against You When it comes to television and movie films there are many of the same elements that may only be different by the slightest of things, but one thing that will always stay constant is when the show and/or film is created, the time period of the world is intertwined through the characters gender roles. When comparing a 1950’s show to today’s favorites, gender roles would be very different challenging and reinforcing stereotypes due to how women and men were portrayed in the world in the past and the present. Women especially, have been challenged in the working field for time and time again and in the show Grey’s Anatomy (season 12 episode 7), it is clear how the creators not only reinforced typical male and female stereotypes but challenged them in the same few moments of a scene as well. Grey’s Anatomy reinforces how women are thought to be, challenge the position a women holds, reinforces a dominant male stereotype, and challenges male stereotypes of emotion.
Traditionally, when women are thought about, they are presented in a way of being the caregiver, or having a motherly appeal on situations and in this episode of Grey’s Anatomy the creators reinforced this opinion. Maggie, who is the head of Cardiothoracic Surgery, begins speaking to an elderly patient on her health issues involving her heart and what her plan of attack will be to get the women back on her feet. Maggie speaks in soft tones, explaining what she is saying in slow
It is often said that the media and the arts are an accurate reflection of any given community. This is especially true in American pop-culture, where television shows depict the various stereotypes attributed to men and women and the roles they play in society. House, a highly popular medical drama that revolves around Dr. Gregory House and his diagnostic team, is a particularly good example as it represents the true state of the traditional gender roles in American culture today by, both, redefining and reinforcing them over the course of the show.
Women, grandmothers, girls, boys, grandfathers, and men are all depicted in the media differently every day. Each television show, movie, football game, commercial, and broadcast contains at least one of the individuals mentioned above. My main focus will be on how men and women are depicted in the media. Ultimately, I do not watch much television but, lucky for me two of my favorite shows that I do get the chance to watch, air back to back on Thursday evenings. I was able to watch both of them within the two hour time period requirement for this particular assignment. The television shows I chose were, Grey's Anatomy, on ABC and Dance Moms, on the lifetime channel. I am going to use these two shows to investigate further into the
The fictional character I relate to the most is Meredith Grey from Grey’s Anatomy. She does the best that she can to do the right thing in difficult situations and she has trouble connecting with people. Although I am not a world renowned surgeon, yet, I feel her personality fits with mine the best. I sometimes find it hard to relate to the people around me and have a deep personal connection with them. Throughout the show Meredith normally attaches to one or two people to rely on, we are similar in that way, I find it hard to trust a lot of people and it takes a long time for me to feel comfortable enough to open up to them. Meredith also almost always tries her hardest to do the right thing, sometimes it does not end up the way it was supposed
When Dee was determined to get the quilts, Mama presented her personal strength by “snatching the quilts out of [Dee’s] hands and dumped them into Maggie’s lap” (294). Even though Maggie said that Dee could have the quilts, Mama knew that Maggie was upset because she heard Maggie fall in the kitchen and slam the door when Dee asked for the quilts. At that moment, Mama realized that Dee was the child who got everything she wanted because she was the most outspoken. Contrarily, Maggie who was physically and mentally maimed, was the quiet sibling who even more so than her mother never wanted conflict. Unlike Dee who left home for college and disrespected her family’s lifestyle, Maggie stayed with her mother to help out around the house and ultimately revered and respected her family and traditions. Mama found that the daughter who has never given trouble and has always been faithful deserves to keep her inheritance even if a bit of conflict may arise among family members. When Mama plopped the quilts on Maggie, Maggie sat on the “bed with her mouth open.” (294) Maggie instantly learned that she should never let other people take what is rightfully hers and that she can and should stand up for herself. Maggie does not have to fight physically but a hold simple conversation with her can be enough for her to grown and show her
They are also always striving to win the Harper Avery award which is an award for the most brilliant doctors.
Grey’s Anatomy is a popular television show on ABC that airs Thursday night’s at 7:00. In television land, this is known as a primetime slot. Season 11 has an average of 8.22 million viewers and has been renewed for one more season (Grey 's Anatomy TV Show on ABC). Grey’s Anatomy is well-known for its mind blowing medical scenarios and incredibly talented doctors. Both of these leave viewers with pondering thoughts of what they would do in similar situations, and a bit of self confidence on handling a situation if an actual person collapsed in front of them. The study will examine the amount of viewers who binge watch the show between the ages of 17 and 21 declaring Pre-Med as their major at a four-year university because they believe it will be as easy as the television show depicts being a doctor is.
The nurse nods, as if to say she understands and between ragged inspirations, Maggie adds, “I want a morphine drip, I’ve had enough” Again, the nurse holds Maggie’s hand and asks, “Are you sure?” Then again, with sudden and unexplainable
In the media we see today, and movies that are continually coming out all have a central idea in common. They all show and represent the idealistic perspective of male versus female in society. From cartoons to chick flicks to romances and comedies we notice identifiable differences and trends represented between the two genders. In the movie I watched, “Clueless,” there are many examples illustrating male superiority over female, ideas of what femininity should be, and female appeal towards the male figures in the film.
Women are deemed as a “minority” yet make up 51% of the world population and in 2014 made up only 12% of protagonists in films. And that is just on-screen, the percentage decreases as you go farther and farther into behind-the-scenes positions such as directors, cinematographers, and writers. Add race and ethnicity and those characters' percentages decline even more (Lauzen, 2015.) Women in film and television are often portrayed with emphasis based on their body type and in advertisement are largely objectified. The large objectification and misrepresentation of women in the media has led to an offset psychological view of women from growing up to adulthood.
It is currently on its fourteenth season with over three spin-offs, it has been without a doubt a successful medical television drama. Scholars across the communication field agree that women are misrepresented greatly in the media. A study conducted by Collins in 2011 found that women are continuously underrepresented, sexualized, subordinated, placed in traditional roles, and portrayed as especially concerned with body imaged and physical appearance in mass media. Grey’s Anatomy directly refutes these claims. As demonstrated earlier in this paper, the protagonist is a driven female, Meredith Grey, who is studying to be a surgeon.
In the media specifically shows in United States are the typically represented some gender roles of men and women. Men are depicted as successful individual, bread winner of the family or the one that provides good things for the family. They are capable of everything and they represent men as strong and independent roles. Men roles are the superhero who will do everything to make everything perfect. Men are supposedly represented with honor competitiveness, with power and self-reliance or sometimes objectifying sex. Nonetheless, the roles of men in other shows illustrated more successful and more capable in doing more things than women. Consequently, we typically watch women as a mother who take cares of the family, the household chores
First off, Maggie is the youngest daughter of Mama. She has a meek and timid way about her. Actions such a the way she walks and talks truly reveals her lack of low self-confidence. There is a reason Maggie acts like that, and the reason being she was caught in a house fire. Burns cover her body making her feel ugly, this lowering her self-esteem. The life Maggie is choosing to live is a simple one, marry a average boy, who’s not too bright, who will take care of her. Her ideas about
While watching the “Ladies Room” episode of Mad Men, a lot of traditional gender roles were portrayed. Gender roles are often defined as how a society defines how women and men should think and behave. Men are often taught to show instrumental qualities, such as competitiveness, dominance, and confidence, while women exhibit more expressional qualities, such as empathy and sensitivity. The Mad Men episode started off with a man showing dominance by being demanding towards a waitress. While at work, the men competed against each other all while messing around and having fun at work. Women in the episode expressed themselves by gossiping and showing feelings towards others.
There are countless scenarios throughout this series that are similar to what takes place every day in a hospital and what the doctors and nurses see on a daily basis. Grey’s Anatomy benefits its viewers through realistic portrayals. Multiple surgeries have performed on the show that are consistent with literature. This could be a medium for medication students to review their content of interest or for those who are considering joining the medical field. Coronary bypass is one of many surgeries that is often completed on this show. During this procedure blood is diverted around a section of a blocked artery in the heart to restores blood flow to a patient’s heart muscle. Coronary bypass surgeries are just as common on Grey’s Anatomy as they
Growing up as a child with parents that were both fairly busy with work I often found myself sat in front of a television either waiting for the day to begin or to end. I remember watching shows and seeing how the boys always seemed to be more outspoken, hyper-masculine and the leader in a given situation while the girls were always the passive ones who were depicted as shy followers. Now that I am older I find myself watching even more television, allowing me to see how the media depicts men and women in society. For example, The Big Bang Theory, in its earlier seasons, it only had one female lead, Penny. Her character was very stereotypical in the sense that she was the scattebrained neighbor. The way that men and women are portrayed has
