Google is a very unique company to say the least. The company was founded by Sergey Mikhaylovich Brin and Lawrence Page, an American computer scientists and en-trepreneurs.The two friends met while attending Stanford University and created Google as their research project in 1996. Although the internet search engines existed before, this one was different. While the traditional search networks determined the page’s relevance based on the number of times that the search term was used on the site, Google engine ranked pages judging their relevance based on the links between the various sites.

S.w.o.t. Analysis
Now looking at Goodle phone division known to the world as Android it really is quite interesting.
Figure 1 United State Phone Market Share
Now Google has a very strong grip of phones utilizing their operating system. Looking at the figure above, only Apple does not utilize Google’s operating system. This clearly is a compa-ny that is dominating the marketshare, and can affor to go after high profits on their devices, the problem is Google is not very known for their devices, but we will get into that later on.
Another major strength that Google has is that because this company has such a strong market share in areas such as Email applications (Gmail), Internet search engines (Google search), consumer maps (Google maps), there is a healthy and steady ecosystem that this compa-ny can and does utilize on their mobile platform.
Now let’s get into some of the weaknesses in this division of Google. For starts unlike Apple they have not yet
It is important to pay attention to those manufacturers that are working with android (Not only concentrate marketing activities in apple or RIM), because the potential growth of the Google’s brand could be an opportunity to grow in smart phones sales, increasing the market share.
While I totally appreciate the slight negative opinions of others here in my personal opinion it all comes down to the fact that Google is actually a business and so has to make money. I appreciate that some of its dealings are a little 'shady' but show me a Global corporation that doesn’t come across this way in some elements of what it does. (Think Apple and its over priced media services.)
There are many competing brands of smart phones and Samsung has reported a decline of profits in 2014. Information from GSM arena shows than Samsung released 54 new phone models in 2014 , compared with 24 by HTC , 11 Motorola and 2 by Apple, leading to increased production costs and lack focus on a specific customer segments thereby losing some of its competitive advantage (GSM Arena , 2015).The lack of popularity of its own OS (Tizen ) and dependence on Google’s Android platform makes it vulnerable on google to develop an “ecosystem”. There are component integration issues as well as loss revenue from potential App sales (Strategic Mangement insight , 2015). Negative publicity from litigation due to patents are likely to continue as technology patents are vague and Samsung with is large portfolio is likely to infringe on some of the patents (Tibken, 2014).
The two firms being compared were google and apple, both firms dominate the intersection of technology and consumer access. In addition they both compete across a huge range of sub-industries such as computing software, hardware, operating systems, applications and web browsing amongst others. However each firm takes a different approach from an organizational perspective.
Due to the increased competition from Yahoo and Microsoft, it has posed a great threat to Google Company. Entry of such like companies in the market has been relatively easy and even offering similar services to the consumers is no longer a problem as unlike a while back, technology has greatly improved. With an improvement in technology, creating sites that help people access information from the internet has been quite cheap and all it calls for is the creativity of a company. Google, however, has been able to remain at the top of the chart. They have been able to come up with a user-friendly search engine for their clients, one that is easy to understand as well as easy to use. Also, Google has been able to cut on cost as they are able to create web pages using UNIX web servers which are relatively cheap. This makes it possible for them to minimize the cost of input and hence maximizing their profit margins. This makes it possible for them to hire qualified personnel, offer quality services, advertise their products, and even offer promotions, helping them overcome the competition in the market structure.
Google’s business model is geared towards mobile computing and the Internet. The company wants versatile smartphones that allow access to the Web and the use of applications that can be used on different devices. Google also has strength in advertising, in that they appeal to many potential customers on the Web.
The battle for the mobile computing market share between Apple and Google wouldn’t matter much if there wasn’t so much potential money at stake, and the majority of that money will come from advertising. App sales are another important component, especially for Apple. What irritated Steve Jobs about Google OS was that the Android phones offered many features that Apple had created, including the overall look of the devices and the use of multi-touch finger swiping.
Google Inc. provides the biggest threat to Apple Inc. due to the hugely growing line of the Android market and their overwhelming ability to provide advertising to vendors. This seemingly puts heavy pressure on Apple to keep up with new products and to continue to create the next best thing. Google provides a much different way of recording their revenue. This is due to the fact that they receive revenue in a much different way. Google, unlike Apple who mostly sells products over services, sells services over products. The main source of income they receive is from providing there vendors with advertising space. As much as 96% of the company’s revenue comes from this source (Google Inc., 2012). Within this variation, they recognize revenue a little differently. Since most of the revenue comes from advertising, Google collects most revenue on a
In Manjoo’s view, “It’s hard to call Android anything other than a resounding success. Well, except for one small thing: Most Android phones are crap” (Manjoo). Although Manjoo acknowledges the fact that Android is a very successful company, in making this comment he rejects to succumb to the extremely popular operating system that is Android. The unresponsive touchscreen, unnecessary software, overall layout of the home screen is unattractive and difficult to comprehend and the overall cheapness of the phones frustrated Manjoo. I believe that one of Android’s main problem is not the software but the companies providing the service. Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T all add extra adware to Android devices that are paid for by companies such as Blockbuster and NFL which cannot be removed from the phone. Consequently, the perfect phone expected by the consumer is not being delivered.
Google’s total assets have steadily increased dating back from 2008 to 2012. Some key figures to point out in their assets are the slow growth between the second half of 2008
The competition of mobile operating systems usage is a huge factor in the United States. Google provides an operating system for mobile smartphones called Android in that case, Apple decides to roll out a mobile operating system for Apple devices called iOS in the same year. The ratio of people using iOS in the United States over Android in the past couple years has been 6 to 1. However, after Google’s improvements and recently new updates to the operating system which is called Lollipop 5.0 has dominated a big percentage of iOS users to use Android based operating system smartphones. (Fact on Android vs iOS) Take another example by Google, they have invented a web browser in which competes with Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer has integrated with Microsoft’s operating system Windows and has been used quite well. On the other hand, Google decided to invent Google Chrome as a competitor to Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. Google’s web browser
