Good Will Hunting: A Film Analysis with Emphasis on
Finding One’s Happiness
Sean reads a note from Will: "Sean, if the Professor calls about that job, just tell him, sorry, I have to go see about a girl." The film Good Will Hunting focuses on the story of a young man unsure of his future, but discovering a direction through guidance of his psychologist, Sean Maguire. Will Hunting, the protagonist of the classic film, has a gift for mathematics, however, Will is stuck between picking a successful career or a relationship with his soul mate. Sant, the director the film, has previously focused on themes such as homosexuality and social issues. Gerald Lambeau notices that Will has the ability to use math in a way that not even his college students could. After knowing this, Prof Lambeau, shows his overly obsessive behavior. He basically pushes Will to get himself together by mentoring him academically and encouraging him to start therapy. This decision wasn't necessarily on Will's plans. A Forbes contributor, Andersen, explained that not having a college degree does not necessarily equal failure. Agreeing with this, most of the U.S. population focuses on relying on school as an intelligence measure of an individual. Throughout the film obstacles and conflicts define the characters and help the viewer outline the theme in the movie. For example, the first obstacle Hunting faced was getting arrested. This happened as a result of assaulting an officer who was trying to separate a fight between Will and a bully he knew years back. This is when Lambeau offers Will an opportunity to overcome the obstacle. Lambeau acted as a supervisor while Will was on probation, therefore offering Will to study mathematics and see a psychotherapist to overcome his issues. This portion of the film states that, although Will was an intelligent young man, his aggressive behavior was affecting his life. Obviously, this shows Gus Van Sant’s intentions of showing the character’s ability to grow and find a place in the world. According to Moura, “…regardless o what you call it, your film will always have a moral and a message.” (Moura) Agreeing with this, the film uses character’s interrelations and obstacles to illustrate a
