Globalization is the process of integration arising from the interchange among people, ideas, and culture. Globalization shows that international trade between other countries has impacted the way the U.S is now. Most of the products we use today is made in other countries such as China, Indonesia, and South Korea. As beneficial it may sound to have products made cheap in other countries and sold in the United States at a much higher price. This is also known to have a problem to the factory workers. What is worse is that the CEO of the company knows about how they are treating their workers and still does not do anything to make changes. The reading, “ Daughters and Generals in the Politics of the Globalized Sneaker,” by Cynthia Enloe depicts the unfairness when it comes to factory workers, especially women not getting paid enough. Many women are put to work to support their families but they barely make end meets. These young women are working instead of receiving an education. In the U.S this would not happen, but these young women in foreign countries have no option but to provide for their family. During the Cold War, Nike, Reebok, Adidas, and Puma created many new factory sites in other countries that were allied to the U.S. Nike opened up a factory in South Korea because labor is cheap. The young women there were encouraged by the South Korean government to work and earn money in these show factories. The young women would be considered “patriotic” to their company if they were to work and the money they earned would help their families make ends meet. Globalization did not bring the promised benefits people hoped to have. It brought poverty instead. “ The actual number of people living in poverty has actually increased by almost 100 million,” (Stiglitz 222). Africa has high expectation with colonial independence. The continent is in misery and is falling. This effect shows that globalization did not succeeded positively. The government fears that if one market crashed, the others will fall. Another example of a country that promised prosperity is Russia. “ It brought unprecedented poverty: in many respects, for most of the people, the market economy proved even worse than their communist leaders has predicted,” (Stiglitz 223). As a result, the western countries than stopped trade from the poor countries. This hurted America and the developing countries, both as a consumer and as tax players.
