The story immediately starts off with the mother telling her daughter what she is expected to do. All of these things that are explained are said to send out the message that the mother is creating a lady, developing a house wife, and a strong, independent woman. Kincaid’s thesis in the story “Girl” is very clear because the intentions she has are expressed through the dialogue between the mother and daughter. The theme of the story does not change much throughout the story. Right off the bat the mother’s attitude is portrayed to be verbally aggressive and thoughtless. The use of the word slut is absurd; however, the reader does need to realize that everyone’s teaching and morals are justified in different ways. This could’ve been seen as a way to belittle the child, but due to the other examples given throughout the story, I don’t think she meant any harm by it. “When you are growing dasheen, make sure it gets plenty of water or else it makes your throat itch when you are eating it.” Dasheen is a crop from the Caribbean, which indicates the setting takes place in a different region of the world. The way morals are taught in this part of the world may be different than our region, so I don’t necessarily think her actions are entirely crude. As you continue to read, the main focus of the excerpt quickly changes when the use of irony is thrown in. Instead of using the dialogue to depict the image of how a young lady should act, it is used to tell how to act the complete opposite. Quotes such as ‘this is how you sweep a corner; this is how you sweep a whole house” turn into words that are solely spoken to teach the child to not be entirely dependent on a
