The purpose of the “Gettysburg Address” was to tell the country to move on and to give them hope that the country will be reunited. The concept of freedom is also presented in this speech. In line 1-2, Lincoln says that the fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation conceived in liberty”. Lincoln says that the country is “testing whether that nation… can long endure”. By this, Lincoln means that the country was fighting to preserve peace and freedom. He achieves his purpose by using rhetorical devices such as allusion. “The Declaration of Independence” is referenced by him saying, “all men are created equal”.
