Gender Differences In The United States

Throughout history, women have been regarded as of lesser value than men particularly in the public sphere. This is the result of gender stratification. Gender stratification refers to the issue of sexism, “or the belief that one sex is superior to the other” (Carl et al., 2012, p. 78). The theory that men are superior to women is essential to sexism. Sexism has always had negative consequences for women. It has caused some women to avoid pursuing successful careers typically described as “masculine”—perhaps to avoid the social impression that they are less desirable as spouses or mothers, or even less “feminine.”

When analyzing leadership characteristics and styles, there are considerable differences in gender characteristics that are identified. Men are considered to have “masculine” traits, such as being

Inequality between different groups of people within the United States is concerning for many sociologists and society in general. One of the main inequalities throughout the United States is gender inequality. Gender inequity is found in all past and present societies. It takes the form of patriarchy. From the patriarchal point of view, gender inequality can be traced back to biological differences in early societies (“Steven Goldberg on Patriarchy” 2006). This inequality is present in society through many different forms, including job segregation, the gender pay gap, and a great difference in women’s political representation (Joan Acker, 1989).

From short stories like “The Yellow Wallpaper,” to the court cases like Ellen Pao’s Suit vs. Kleiner Perkins, and even a data book like Women in the Labor Force, it is clear to see that inequality and mistreatment of women still exists today. People often say that inequality is a thing of the past, however it has been a serious problem since the dawning of civilization itself, and it is still so today. Women are often seen as lesser beings than men, and are treated accordingly. It is getting better, and women are starting to take their rightful places as equals in the workforce, and as equals in general. However, the world still has a long way to go before the inequality and mistreatment of women comes to a complete stop.

The gender gap has been a continental divide in the American political arena for decades where differences in male and female voters and politicians has affected the efficacy of political action in the United States of America. Experts across the board have studied the gender gap and have concluded to many opinions about the gender gap and its condition and what it means to the United States of America. The polarization between the sexes has created a country divided and weak due to the widening of the gender gap.

I was six year old when I was uprooted from my village in Punjab, India. I was anxious to see the promised land, as my parents had referred to it. My father left for America before I was born so he could obtain a labor job to save up money for when my mother, brother, and I would arrive. I never expected my beliefs and perspectives to change upon arrival. Growing up in a very uniform culture I had a black and white view of the world. In our culture women were responsible for being caretakers. Their job was simply to raise the children, cook, and be domesticated. The men had the role of the breadwinner and they were the ones encouraged to get an education.

For years, women have been viewed as weak, indecisive, and subjective. Women have become more empowered since their suffrage and earning their rights. Although, they have their rights, women are not equal to men in today’s society because of unequal pay and discrimination. The pay between the two gender in recent college graduates and stabilized jobs opt towards males. Women are discriminated in sports, entertainment , and politics in multiple ways. Also, the ratios between men and women in corporate offices, the entertainment business, and political positions is off balance, in favor of men.

Being a woman and working in an environment full of women, gender inequality is transparent everywhere. Gender can determine how much education one gets, how much money one earns, what jobs one is qualified for, and how one is treated in society. Men are in the dominant group of society, while women are subjected to the subordinate group. Women’s duties and appearances are under immense pressure due to western culture. Women are pressured to be sexually attractive and to serve men.

That image of women can be changed if affirmative action is reinforced and allowed qualified employees who have been discriminated against to get a job. Also, the gap of pay between men and women is a concrete example of inequality between them. For example, according to the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, in 2015, women with a full time jobs made only 80 cents for every dollar earned by men. Women work as harder as men, and they should deserve to have equal pay. Women at work should be allowed to progress at the same pace as men and should also be respected. Furthermore, women are subject to domestic violence, sexual harassment and rape. In order to reduce or banned those troubles that torment women more effectively, laws should be passed. Also, equality of women within their family requires a sharing of responsibilities between members of the family. Women should not be the only one responsible for domestic chore, taking care of their children and parents. Therefore, they should get support from their

Gender is more than what the word seems to be, it has a variety of meaning such as, the role of a female or a male in society which refers to gender role. Masculine, feminine, transgender, cross-dresser, and drag are types of genders in society. Many different cultures seek the word “gender” differently, it all depends on your identity. Identity defines who you are as a person, a male or female. But some individuals can be introduced to the world as one gender but can grow into a different identity such as transgender or transvestite.

Throughout history and today, we women are constant victims of stereotyping from our society. Certain “rules” have to be followed and certain “ideal” women images have to be kept. We are raised in a way to fill certain position where the society wants us to be and as a result, the opportunities are always limited for us and ideas of our importance in the society are diminishing. Even though women gained some independence, where women can work and take various position in society, the society’s idea of typical role of women never seem to change.

The concept of gender denotes the distinction between culturally driven and created roles of masculinity and femininity. These specific and normalized attitudes and behaviors transcend and effect how differently men and women live their lives. Based on society’s continual re-enforcement of such gender stereotypes, we see an on-going dilemma of gender inequality. Though some may argue that men experience gender inequality, this seems to exist on a much more invasive level for women. As of recently, the awareness of gender inequality in the workplace has increased. With the fight for equal pay and equal respect, society is already making strides towards the equality of women.
